No more Protest

Regardless of your views of Just Stop Oil, we should all be worried.

This has gone through easily because people hate Just Stop Oil, it’s an easy target and has fooled people.

We should not be celebrating lengthy jail sentences for planning protests, we should be scared about what this means.

Not just that, but if peaceful protests equal a jail sentence then what’s to stop people from going to violence if they know they can’t protest.

People should stop and think, ignore your prejudice and see the bigger picture.

I should have been clearer. I meant in the case of a protest, not this one in particular. That's why I gave the example of a similar protest in which ambulances got through. Maybe nobody would have died if they hadn't gone through and maybe somebody would have. That's what's difficult to say, in general, because we don't know the condition of the person in it.

Yes, I am focusing on what people in this thread say, because it's a discussion.
You're not going to browbeat me into reading something I'm not interested in reading, so please just stop.

You should really do yourself a favour and download the Judge's Sentencing Remarks which will give you the facts of the situation before him.

I'm not really interested in what you think about some other unrelated event or what you think various people in this thread are saying.

Either you're interested in the facts of the case this thread is concerned with or you're not.

I think we've established you're NOT interested in the facts of the case, but prefer to stand on your soapbox banging your keyboard.

Without facts, your posts become meaningless.

That's your problem, not mine. But if you insist on putting misleading assumptions in the thread, then you can expect someone will challenge you on it.

And they'll be referring to the actual facts of the case as helpfully explained by the Judge. 🤷‍♂️

Naturally, what interests you and doesn't interest you does not concern me in the slightest.

Must you get so personal and characterize other people's posts in such a dishonest and mean spirited way? You must be awfully insecure to engage in such childish behaviour. Don't post to me anymore if you don't want to talk to me. That's a simple solution which will certainly suit me. Okay?

Regardless of your opinion on the individuals, it is utterly ridiculous for them to have been given jail time just as the new government have expressed their shock at the dire extent of overcrowding in prisons.

I also find it hypocritical that the protesters have been given jail time with weight given to the “potential” dangers of their actions, but the same isn’t applied to the potential danger of other people eg. abusive men, who can harass their victims for years but they’re told nothing can be done until they actually cause harm, by which time it’s too late.

Do you understand what a conspiracy is?

An abusive man who calls one of his mates and plans with said mate to harass a victim could be jailed for conspiracy.

Alex Belfield got 5 and a half years for harassment.

I see one of the mothers is saying how unfair the sentence is as her dearest daughter will miss her brothers wedding. So sad boo hoo 😢

GoldFrame · 23/07/2024 07:52

I’d probably avoid committing imprisonable offences if I wanted to go to my brother’s wedding

GoldFrame · 23/07/2024 08:00

Actually. I’m now quite cross about that. Stopping other attending funerals and cancer appointments and food deliveries. Now whingeing about their own engagements. The entitlement is astonishing.

Seriously??!

Yeah, Cressidas mum gave a speech outside of court, started off saying she won't be able to attend her brothers wedding and then the rest gives vibes of- this shouldn't happen to us, we are posh!

Sad thing is, someone with 'so much potential' could have gone on I'm sure to affect real change if they'd been so inclined.

The lack of self-awareness it takes to include that in her speech, given what her daughter had just been convicted for, is staggering. Utterly tone deaf.

I think you'll find I did not get personal with you AND you confirmed you weren't interested in the Judge's Sentencing Remarks!

If you continue to post in such a way that mischaracterises this case AND minimises the actions of the five JSO convicts, I and others will be there to challenge you on your assertions.

Complete with the facts from the Judge's Sentencing Remarks.

So, I suggest you would be better off sticking to the facts of the case contained within the Sentencing Remarks.

Only the childish posters blatantly ignore the facts of the case contained within the Judge's Sentencing Remarks.

I am not one of those people since I've read it and posted various detail from it.

Perhaps her mother could smuggle the wedding video into prison in a cake. She could then watch it in her cell.

Only if it’s a VHS. With her and her mates’ form on the interweb she’d be organising massive public disruption and nuisance before you could say “prisoner A1234BC”.

I see the soup on Van Gogh ones are on trial now- and it’s before the same judge.

I saw reports that the soup had damaged the 17th century Italian frame. So that is not good

Once you're on the M25 etc and forced to a stand still by the likes of these convicted criminals, you dont have other ways to travel around.

Hopefully they receive a custodial sentence as well.

Some really scary posters on this thread!
Of course these sentences are ridiculously excessive, when serious violent criminals get less, and when prisons are collapsing.
Oh, and yes, I have read the judges remarks. Downloaded it this afternoon.
The judge probably has shares in big oil.
I don't like the tactics of JSO at all by the way, but it's just so obviously bonkers to sentence people, who are trying to save the human race, with years in jail. It's the lying politicians and multi-millionaire planet wreckers who deserve jail. It's all so topsy turvy.
What's happened to Mumsnet lately anyway? Overrun with right-wing trolls and climate change deniers.
Glad there are some lovely people here speaking sense.

JustAVeryWeirdWoman · 23/07/2024 20:41

I think a lot of people who've spent their entire lives in Britain have a very rosy view of the judicial system and see it as fundamentally fair and objective, which it is not- it's led by flawed humans just as everything else, and subject to political bias. They also don't understand that an authoritarian regime usually takes power gradually in the beginning. Draconic laws like the anti-protest law the Tories put in are a step towards authoritarianism.

A disproportionate prison sentence against climate protestors sets a precedent. It means that anyone who steps out of line in any way can be thrown behind bars for a long time, and the state is not your friend, nor does it actually care about your wellbeing.

GoldFrame · 23/07/2024 21:01

The state and the judiciary are separate things.

judges don’t sentence because they “have shares in big oil” Get a grip

CustardCreams2 · 23/07/2024 21:05

This was NOT peaceful protest.

Is a protest peaceful when it leads to harm caused to members of the public? Those missing medical appointments and treatment. Hindering the passage of emergency workers. Stopping people getting to job interviews. Those late to take medications.

In my book that actually constitutes violent protest. Abhorrent behaviour and I agree with the sentencing.

And now the mother of Cressida comes out saying she will miss her brothers wedding. What about the funerals/weddings people likely missed due to Cressidas actions themselves. Tone deaf.

I’m assuming you have evidence or some kind of basis for asserting that the Judge had shares in “big oil” and that influenced his decision, because if not that’s a pretty serious allegation to make publicly about a member of the judiciary.
