Any worries? It is chaos out there by the look of the news.

My experience is that I’m not able to work today and had trouble using my debit card this morning. The transaction eventually went through but it’s not showing on my account.

Planes grounded as mass worldwide IT outage hits airlines, media and banks

The cause of the outage is unclear - but Microsoft says it's taking "mitigation issues".

Testing? Isn't that what your customers are for?

Good point.

Where are marketing. We need to send out a satisfaction survey.

If you're not paying for the product, you are the product.

I really have no idea what the point of that comment actually is.

It means if you aren't paying for iOS, Android O365 etc etc etc. then why are you getting it "free" ?

petermaddog · 19/07/2024 16:18

mircosoft is the second part of the problem
those that use apple not the same os so apple is doing fine
we all use linux so no problems either

Auburngal · 19/07/2024 16:23

Not at work today.

What I heard are purchasing 3rd party gift cards and phone top ups - both the registered card and vouchers can't be done as server that processes them is down. Plus this morning the system to check schedules, book leave was down as its a system used internationally by 000s of companies.

Did I miss something? Who is getting it for free? I honestly am lost here.

Are you in IT? Are you aware of the absolutely insane licensing costs of those things.

Good reminder of why we should keep some cash and why we need to prevent a cashless society

This 💯

IcyKoala · 19/07/2024 16:34

Yes we always keep some cash just in case. But we also have restaurants that only accept cash close by.

Yes that's all fine except for when the resaurants can't order their food in because it uses IT, and the tills won't open because oh... they use IT as well...and the supermarkets can't restock because ooops... IT again.

Narrow view.

CheshireCat1 · 19/07/2024 16:39

I’m sure that it was announced a couple of weeks ago to keep a few days of food in, I don’t think it’s related to this, but this type of thing could happen anytime with relying so much on tech. I’m not in work today, we have two operating systems, one is working and one isn’t so we can carry on with the service, which is vital. All companies should have business continuity plans.

Ponderingwindow · 19/07/2024 16:51

I can’t work and since I work by billable hours, I’m not getting paid. It will be fine, but it’s annoying. I had a nice day with no meetings and no known interruptions planned for some serious detail work. Those kind of days are hard to come by and almost always only happen on Fridays.

I always have plenty of food in. Thank goodness I had enough food, cleaning products, toiletries etc during the selfish shelf stripping mid March 2020 and just bought things as when I saw things back on sale in supermarkets.

Some people may say that some people may not be able to afford to stock up on things. Buying a couple of tins and packets of cheap rice and pasta may cost £2.

I'm hoping to break into it. Is there still a call for bit slice design ?

I have my own digital watch.

This 💯

But mostly a cashless society...

IcyKoala · 19/07/2024 17:38

I live right next to lots of shops, I do not need to keep food in, just cash. Even when we did have systems going down, the independents still took cash.

roses321 · 19/07/2024 17:40

I think people can stop freaking out about food and cash now. We're not in the apocalypse. An IT system busted a few thousand computers and it's getting fixed now. We will live another day, please do not submit your bunker planning permission just yet. We do not want another loo roll crisis.

Silly post. We can think for ourselves and make our own decisions.

The loo roll joke is so fresh & new, did you make that up all by yourself?

Fine, but post the planning applications. I wouldn't rely on email right now.

Like I said before, we are organised enough to have one shelter room in every street so I wouldn’t need your planning permission but thanks for the warning. Much appreciated. I don’t think anyone on this thread talked about being in the apocalypse, apart from you. People have been quite sensible. Then there are people like you making the old loo roll joke.

I'm sorry for butting in and getting involved when people are having serious discussions about the potential lack of chicken pie for dinner tonight. I won't do it again.

To be fair there have been a few anti cashless society doom sayers

If you want to be arrogant then go ahead, it really is up to you. Or you could actually read the thread and maybe learn something new. Some actually made some really interesting posts.
