To get irritated by surveys that ask for my 'gender' but not for my sex?

Oodiks · 16/07/2024 22:29

If it's on paper I cross out 'gender' and write in sex, if it's a phone survey I comment that my sex is female.

I am my body, my body is me, and my body is female. I do not believe in gendered souls being popped into the 'wrong' body by some foolish god.

I think you are being unreasonable.
you understand the question, refuse to answer it and instead cross out the question
why are you doing all these surveys if you find them so annoying?

I agree. I don't have a gender. I was born a particular sex. This gender crap being forced down our throats is irritating. I am a biological woman and will always be one. No one can change their sex. I don't want to select a gender either, my choice.

Hellopetalmetal · 16/07/2024 22:33

Something I do find annoying on surveys though is why my title is determined partly by whether I’m married (unless doctor/professor etc)!!! And men just have Mr status regardless…

Apparently there over over 150 different made up genders now.

That's why I used Ms from when I was a teenager, it's nobody's business.

Also got irritated with an acquaintance who was Ms X until she got married and became Mrs Y!!!

I'm calling them surveys, but I just mean any paperwork where they ask these questions such as employers, doctors, schools, etc

Sex and gender are no longer the same thing. Sex is biological and gender is some kind of construct.

Yes. Gender is a stupid concept.

ElliLovesDogs · 16/07/2024 22:43

I dont even notice and just answer the question 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes it's a social construct, hence over 150 of the stupid things for idiots who feel the need to tell you they are unicornionsexual or some other such nonsense. I mean who cares if you fancy trees, cars, have sex or don't or think about sex but can't make it unless the other asexualtoadlover dies their hair purple and chants throughout 🙄

How can anyone understand the question though? If it's gender, it's based on some sort of sexist stereotype open to interpretation. If they mean biological sex, then they haven't asked actually specified that and sone people think they can change sex and mean gender.

So what is the question being asked for in whatever survey is asking it ? Are they wanting to know if imaginary males and females like their product/ jobs / whatever or are genuinely researching biological males or females habits ?

You don't notice a question you gave to read to answer 😂

Themintwiththehole · 16/07/2024 22:48

See also "What sex do you identify as?" which I came across recently. I don't identify as a woman, I just am one.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/07/2024 22:48

This again? Why?

I’m 60. Pretty much every form I’ve ever filled in has asked “gender”. Most people recognise that means male or female.
if you identify as another gender, you write that in the box.

That’s what it meant ten years ago. It very much doesn’t now!

Why should people get behind nonsense though?

Some of us want sex based rights to remain, female spaces, sports etc, not the drip drip drip erasure of biological sex into a female being defined by a man who feels that wearing his hair long, popping on dangling earrings and a skirt means he is one or a ridiculous stereotype of what a woman is. No wonder so many children present as confused with adults leading the confusion.

Sex and gender were never the same thing. Sex has always been biological sex. Gender has always been constructed by society & culture. People never thought gender would or should override sex until recently.

Yes I mean, we know we are, we don't have to 'identify' as one.

The latest crap is what we're you 'assigned' at birth! Beyond stupid.

Honestly, I have more important things to worry about in life. I'd love to have the time to get so worked up about something this small.

Depends on the context. A lot of people still use gender to mean biological sex, especially in the US.
If someone asks what gender your cat is, you can safely assume they're not asking about the societal expectations placed upon it.

0live · 16/07/2024 22:58

I agree OP, I don’t have a gender, the same as some people don’t have a religion.

People who don’t have a religion shouldn’t have to chose between Jewish / Muslim / prefer not to say. They should be able to chose “ none “ or “ write in” so they can write Buddist / whatever.

People who don’t have a gender should be given the option of “ none”.

Run along and do your more important things then.

Leave the protection of female spaces, sports, etc to others. How on earth did you spare the time to answer.

Sadly, some of us work with young people very damaged by this social contagion. I worry about children and the damage it's doing to them, some very confused young people, who are very vulnerable need protection. Give them time to grow and love themselves as they are, rather than assuming changing their body, identity etc is a fix all.
