To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

She’d not said that directly in all the posts I’d seen (and I clicked “see all”) she seemed to be purposely ignoring them, which suggests only one thing.

Wonder where my assumption came from though? No smoke without fire, and using the word “wee” in the OP is a pretty big clue.

The OP had directly said she wasn't scottish twice by then, as a reply to earlier posts. You might have clicked, but you didn't read.

You are aware "wee" is commonly used in Canada, New Zealand and Ireland among other places? Its not the giveaway you think it is.

IcedPurple · 16/07/2024 17:56

Obviously you can't be Scottish when you are Irish.

Do you also 'love' the sectarianism and anti Irish biogotry which still exists among a minority of Scots? And does your 'love' of 'the Scots' overlook the disproportionate Scottish involvement in the British empire, in particular the plantations of Ulster? Or do you just blame 'the English' and especially their football team, many of them from ethnic minorities, for all that?

Donald Trump is Scottish isn’t he? By blood?

Yes, his mother was from the Outer Hebrides. Father was of German/American descent.

He's of mixed Scottish and German origin I believe.

He would be eligible to play football for Scotland. In theory.

That's exactly the bigoted behaviour of specific posters I was referring to. Thank you wotcher for providing such a clear example.

OneTC · 16/07/2024 18:38

Read that 9 of the squad qualify to play for Ireland.

I guess Ireland won't have them or something though. Probably wants to avoid becoming beige. I bet those 9 were fucking upset about having to play for England instead

mellongoose · 16/07/2024 18:39

Needlessly petty, OP and says more about you than him. But never mind. You do you, as they say. 🤷‍♀️

Ireland don't tend to do very well in tournament, s
My Dad's Irish, most of my family are Irish I was delighted when they got through to the quarter finals of the world Cup in 1990 ,but have they done much since?

lolly792 · 16/07/2024 19:25

I have friends living in Scotland who heard cheers go up in the neighbourhood when Spain scored their second goal.

Which seems weird to me, as it wouldn't have occurred to me to cheer every time Germany scored against Scotland!

But I wouldn't judge the entire country based on a narrow minded minority. Unlike the OP, who has proved themself to be a total bigot.

I actually wasn’t aware if that but Ireland is the only ex-colony in the EU so given the OP’s passion for the derision of England in Euro 2024, exuding bitterness I think it is this ‘ex-colony’.

SeeSeeRider · 16/07/2024 21:08

@Goldenbear

Ireland is the only ex-colony in the EU

The Netherlands were a colony of Spain, weren't they? And a lot of the Balkans and Central Europe were part of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and unless I am going senile, Greece only threw off the Ottoman (Turkish) yoke fully in 1832, and a lot of the islands were colonies of the Venetians and then the French. And that's only a start. Oh and Sweden owned Norway until 1909. and Malta and Cyprus used to be British. And Minorca for 70 years.

SeeSeeRider · 16/07/2024 21:21

And wasn't the Roman Empire a thing? Veni, vidi, vici, and all that? And the Ancient Greeks of course.

"Whether it's the "ABE crowd" or the club draggers who make broad stroke comments about the attitude of an entire nation, it's bigotry. You are clearly no less guilty than the people you came on to abuse in your ignorance."

Errr the "ABE" crowd are the club draggers who make broad stroke comments about the attitude of an entire nation. This thread illustrates that perfectly. And yes it's bigotry.

Oh no, on this thread there are a fair few others only too keen to display small minded bigoted views. If you think only the English have been abused on this thread you've missed a couple of comments to say the least.

I was about to name a few others but SeeSeeRider beat me to it.

MiGatoEsBonitoTuGatoEsFeo · 16/07/2024 22:17

@GreyBlackLove I was pointing it out to you because you posed it as an 'either or'. It seemed you didn't recognise the fact that the anti English brigade were doing just that. Or within the context of the thread it came across that you just didn't mind when they did it and were happy to paint the English posters as bigoted club draggers.

I've read through the entire thread. The thread that was obviously started to incite hatred and division. And from what I've read, the 'fair few others' you speak of sound fed up of being tarred and bashed tbh. Maybe they lashed out in retaliation and they shouldn't be making sweeping statements about "bitter Scots" or whatever but it's clear that they've made those assumptions because they've experienced so much hatred from a loud mouthed minority. The answer isn't to compound that and accuse them of being knuckle draggers whilst overlooking the clear goadiness of the OP and other posters on here.

Big difference between not supporting the country you moved to and supporting the opposition to the country you live in

This

Free to support whoever you want but actively supporting whatever opposition of the country you've chosen to live in is a bit sad and imo shows underlying bigotry.

What is it with some Irish people and determined they’re the hardest done by country ever? Confused

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 12:23

‘I could be wrong but this absolutely stinks of Scottish/Irish/Welsh supporting the other team just because it's 'not England'. ’

Indeed, but given the history of England and Ireland/Scotland in particular do you blame them!??

I'm Scots/English and that's a cop out as we have been no better historically.

Besides it's only the keyboard idiots/bigots who are ABE. All the Scots around me were wishing England well.

A bit of craic is to be expected/enjoyed but racism is unacceptable and should be called out not minimised.

I didn’t know any of that but should have said ‘Ex-English’ colony as the OP refers to it, rather than British, that specific difference and the OP’s phrasing and use of the English language makes it seem pretty obvious.

Oh except ‘Sweden owned Norway’ what do you mean by that, so Sweden colonised Norway? Did they?

Denmark owned Norway from 1537 to 1814, when the Danish King was compelled to cede Norway to Sweden. Independence came in 1909.

It was never a case of "either or", rather specifically ABE OR people doing that in general, to any nation.

I've worked in lived in England as well as other places, I've experienced physical violence on account of my accent whilst in England and would still never be so ignorant as to use that to justify sweeping generalisations of an entire country. And I continue to consider those that do as knuckle draggers. Tired of bring bashed? What a piss poor justification for bigotry.
