To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

So you’re Scottish then 🥱

No obligation to support England, but the childish bitterness of the Scots is beyond boring, and really must waste a considerable amount of energy. I’d love to know why so many live in England when apparently they hate it so much 🙄

Adviceneeeeded · 16/07/2024 13:31

People go crazy over football. Its very weird

Shaketherombooga · 16/07/2024 12:21

No, because I wasn’t in any way whatsoever other than saying that I was ‘basically a neutral’ for the England Spain game. Read the original post.

I don't think you understand what neutral means

Clarabell77 · 15/07/2024 21:58

Yes really, you’re free to doubt it but I’m fairly certain.

No hatred though, just a bit of dislike for the triumphalist nature of England fans and media, and enjoy seeing them getting egg on their face, it’s really that simple.

I doubt 'Europe' is anywhere near as fixated on England and the English as certain folks here are.

And I can't see how getting to the final and losing by one goal to a clearly better side is 'having egg on their face'. They did better than every other team except for the victors.

Dave update - he’s just messaged an apology for being ‘over the top’ yesterday apparently it has been a long day and a late night etc.
and I am free to support any team I choose… cheers Davy!

LJ update: I feel sorry for Dave.

I'm English and I thought Spain deserved to win...they were better.

Every English football fan I know was pleasantly surprised England made it to the final, were well aware that Spain were the favourites and agreed that they lost to a superior side.

I simply don't see this 'triumphalist' bragging English mentality that so many here seem to think is so pervasive.

I agree, and without wanting to sound like I’m giving Southgate credit for everything, I think he deserves some credit for changing our national mentality of football away from arrogance and triumphalism and towards humility and respect.

Me neither, and that's clearly disappointing to some!

The OP isn't scottish. She's said that directly and indirectly.

At some point this fixation on Scotland starts to become a self fulfilling prophecy when your go to assumption is this

lolly792 · 16/07/2024 15:47

To be fair we don't know what nationality the OP is as they're being very cagey about it!

That's the usual routine with posters slagging off England and the English. They never tell us the name of their mystery homeland so we can't know what this wonderful, or perhaps not so wonderful, land is.

In this case, however, it's extremely obvious, and has been since the first reply.

Completely disagree. It feels very much like Scotland are the bitter party here. I’m English and living in Scotland and I’ve been here for 20 years. My English family and friends rarely think about Scotland most of the time and couldn’t really care less how they do in sports. Certainly not the toe curling, cringeworthy tantrums and pathetic behaviour that I’ve seen from grown adults in Scotland. It’s really repugnant and doesn’t make the nation look good at all. Just like sore losers who get a bit of a rush from feeding off events around them not going to plan waving their salty saltire about

I dont.think anyone is disputing thst ,it's the anyone but England sneering attitude that's grating

Well it is a ‘former colony’ apparently but then when someone suggested the OP was Scottish, they denied it and questioned why so many are suggesting when most of Europe hates England. However, most European countries are not ex-colonies of Britain. It is therefore pretty obvious that is Ireland the OP comes from!

You completely disagree that the OP isn't scottish? Read the thread.

It was fairly obvious from the first post, if not very obvious from the now deleted second where OP is from, even if the only thing she has done is to confirm she's not from Scotland.

You want to start a thread about ango-scottish relations? Have at it, there are absolutely issues. To comment on this one that it's another case of scottish whinging/the bitter Scots etc or any other manner of the insults listed upthread because of a broad brush bigotry you have, despite the OP confirming otherwise, is as tone deaf as it is wrong.

BMW6 · 16/07/2024 16:40

Bloody hell it's perfectly plain OP is Irish!

The use of Feck was a dead giveaway.
(OP used it in 2nd post now deleted)

I completely disagree with the assertion that there is a fixation on Scotland by the English. Read the thread. The fixation is the reverse and it’s fucking boring and just gives people the ick in all honesty. Let it go to all who hold such hatred and rancour in their hearts. It will start to show on your faces before you know it and in your very essence

I have read the thread, clearly. It's patently obvious (a) you haven't, (b) the bigoted, narrow minded views you hold led you to the assumption you chose to make and (c) you continue to be utterly oblivious to the irony of it.

Whether it's the "ABE crowd" or the club draggers who make broad stroke comments about the attitude of an entire nation, its bigotry. You are clearly no less guilty than the people you came on to abuse in your ignorance.

Gamefacer · 16/07/2024 17:37

As are you greyblack , quick to try to insult, sweeping generalisations galore. You convict yourself out of your own mouth. I have explained I have lived in Scotland for twenty years and it’s the behaviour towards the English around these Euros that has been unacceptable. It is unacceptable to me and to many others.

Feel free to copy and paste any sweeping generalisations I've made. All you'll find are direct replies to specific posters who clearly made ill judged assumptions.

You came on to a thread, by most likely an Irish person, to post your opinions about the populace of an different country. Can you not tell the two countries apart? Do you regularly join threads to make snide remarks unconnected to the original post? Ignorant to the end it seems.

Obviously you can't be Scottish when you are Irish.

Do you also 'love' the sectarianism and anti Irish biogotry which still exists among a minority of Scots? And does your 'love' of 'the Scots' overlook the disproportionate Scottish involvement in the British empire, in particular the plantations of Ulster? Or do you just blame 'the English' and especially their football team, many of them from ethnic minorities, for all that?

She’d not said that directly in all the posts I’d seen (and I clicked “see all”) she seemed to be purposely ignoring them, which suggests only one thing.

Wonder where my assumption came from though? No smoke without fire, and using the word “wee” in the OP is a pretty big clue.
