To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

Yes @Ploughlifht and I think there are a couple on here. The posting style, the deliberate misconstruing and the twisting of words.. I mean either that or this is a depressingly nasty place.

There is no 'style', nor deliberate misconstruing of anything. Report it/me by all means though if you're that concerned.

"dislike for the triumphalist nature of England fans"

Hold the front pages!
"Fans cheering on their team and hyping eachother up" shocker!!! 😆

Read back. It comes across as more than dislike.

Most England fans were realistic about our chances but you obviously think we believe all the hype.

I’ve read most of the posts on the thread and know exactly what I’ve posted. What parts do you think seem like more than dislike?

You're just totally making it up though. You have decided I dislike and hate. Which is not true. I think your media tend to big you up too much.

I haven't decided. I am a bit confused?? Maybe that poster is right and there has been a mix up. You can't decide what is hate and what is banter when you aren't the target of it.

I'm not seeing any banter here.

Good one, but that’s not triumphalism.

Maybe you are so full of bile you struggle to differentiate between the two?

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 22:04

@DanielGault if it's not deliberate after the number of times it's been explained then I don't know what to say 😅

Neither am I. That is the point.

I was talking about the Media earlier and made a point of saying it wasn't the fans or the team.

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 22:05

No it's not @Clarabell77 that's the point.

Clairabelle is making it about the fans though.

Just because you say something, and call it explaining, it doesn't make it true

WildLemur · 15/07/2024 22:07

Were I English, I don't think I'd want fans of neighboring nations rooting for us. Winning is more fun when you can lord it over others - it'd take a lot of the fun out if Scotish/Welsh supportrs (for example) responded with "Delighted for you! We were rooting for you the whole time!"

DanielGault · 15/07/2024 22:08

WithACatLikeTread · 15/07/2024 22:06

Well there seems to be quite a bit of mud slinging on here tbh. I've no idea why.

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 22:08

"I was talking about the Media earlier and made a point of saying it wasn't the fans or the team"

Ok but I haven't said otherwise?

It really feels like you're not engaging in good faith.

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 22:13

"Just because you say something, and call it explaining, it doesn't make it true"

Yes it does, in my case earlier I was explaining a point that I had made and that you had misinterpreted.
So yes, I can explain the intention of my own words and that makes it true because I know what point I was making and that you misrepresented it.

You really are hurting aren’t you? 😂

tennesseewhiskey1 · 15/07/2024 22:18

I am not English, i support another team (clearly the best team who got knocked out and im bitter) but if they get knocked out (which they did) - then i support england (which i did), my husband and children are English, i have two jerseys - they have the one. Ive been here over 20 years, so i love this country and i feel this is now my home.

Clarabell77 · 15/07/2024 22:20

Rainbowsponge · 15/07/2024 21:21

Because as you well know it’s not about ‘not wanting a team to win’, it’s about why.

I’ve explained why. To put it more simply, I find England football fans and English pundits/commentators/media to be over-confident, cocky, entitled and annoying, and that’s when they’re playing poorly, so they’d be insufferable if they won something.

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 22:20

"It really feels like you're not engaging in good faith."

Reflecting your intentions onto someone else again?

@DanielGault I'm done with arguing with you, it's annoying and boring. I mean, I was done with you earlier but you kept tagging my posts that weren't actually addressed to you in the first place 🤔🤔🤔
Anyway, enjoy your evening 🧦 😉

No. Keep salting those chips.

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 22:30

Rizzola95 · 15/07/2024 21:33

"Likewise!"

Yes @DanielGault but I haven't claimed to be at work arguing with a "colleague" who was later sent home for pouting about a football match have I?

He wasn’t sent home, it was suggested a half day might benefit him because he was in a right state.
still he made it in I suppose, a couple of others didn’t.
Don’t worry, private company, flexible working, duvet days are a thing… no public services failed 😅
