To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

You sound absolutely charming. Telling a poster to 'feck off' who only responded to you in a polite manner....

To be honest if I'd made a home in a country that I was happy and settled in, I'd support them. But that is up to you at the end of the day, its your choice. Different if they were playing against my home country but if not my home country I'd support them also as the country I live in.

I agree with this. It’s different if they were playing your home country, but in general to support the opposing team is a bit 🤨, but you can support who you like of course, though I wouldn’t make a show of it.

Last night Spain did genuinely deserve the win, but I of course still supported and wanted England to win, though not too upset that they didn’t as Spain played better throughout and England did amazingly to get this far.

It depends if you’re just not supporting them or hoping they will lose I suppose.

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 12:05

‘I'm not English, but if they're playing any other team then I support England.’

That is big of you. Bit random though. I’d probably choose a team that won more TBH… Brazil, Germany maybe?
I mean if you are going to support a national team that’s not yours, make it a good one!

He is RANCIDLY hungover to be fair. It’s a wonder he made it in. We are allowed duvet days here.

There you go

Leah5678 · 15/07/2024 12:05

"I frequently support their opposition" why? You sound assy. It's one thing to not care about football or to think Spain deserved to win because they played well. But seeing as you've asked yeah I'd say you sound annoying. Why did you choose to move here and live here so long if you feel this way?

I'm not English, but if they're playing any other team then I support England. Most of my non English friends don't though. I find the "come on the other team" mentality to be a bit 6th form edge-lord and petty.

If I was visiting France and they were playing some other random country then I'd cheer on France.

Exactly this 'any team but England' vitriol is childish and pathetic. They are all just bitter they didn;t make it out of the group stages ;-)

That’s true though - a lot of us do support the other home nations.

That clearly has come across as a bit much, it’s more of a ‘heck as like you would’ than any kind of actual swear.

Can't stand your attitude. No idea why you would actively not support the country you're living in. No wonder people find your attitude annoying.

less boring than watching England sit with a ball ( when they can actually get it) in their own half for an entire match!
Ah, Brazil, those famously boring footballers…

So you’re a glory hog. You don’t seem to get it so don’t argue with that colleague. It’s okay that it means a lot to him even if it doesn’t to you.

But they are a good team. Or do you get to the final on a rotation basis now? Win a raffle? Draw straws?

My DP is Welsh, they didn't get through. He supported England all the way!

Are you telling me that all those ex-pats from England living in Spain were cheering for Spain? Not sure I believe that.

Wha? I lived in another country for a long time and didn't support them in sport.

Persiancouscous · 15/07/2024 12:10

My husband is English and always supports the opposition 😂

Update on Dave! Dave’s going home… it’s been suggested that home might be the best place for him today.

You don't actually follow the game do you?

Brazil don't play like the sides of 1970 anymore. Far more cynical and dirty these days.
