I was a little bit shocked to see them gathering round him putting themselves in the line of fire like that. Would that happen in this country? Never seen anything like it before and not sure how I feel about it.

Yes I do get that. Do we have the equivalent here? Would our bodyguards act the same? I suppose I’m surprised they didn't have bullet proof vests on like the police/army do.

Edited

They have vests on under their suit jackets.

TorroFerney · 14/07/2024 19:16

How old are you op - do you remember Reagan getting shot at, they did the same then. In fact I think that was the same year Pope John Paul was shot - obviously all the rage in the 80's taking a pot shot at people you didn't like.

You've surely heard of the sniper who assassinated JFK????

WHAT ! ! !
JFK has been assassinated?
When did that happen?
They've certainly kept that quiet. 😲

TeaSoakedDisasterMagnet · 14/07/2024 19:20

Not quite a pile on Charles, but here is a video of Prince Charles being targeted in 1994. You can see he’s shoved out of the way by his bodyguard. The bodyguard’s job is to be between their principal and the threat.

King Charles deals with shots fired near him in Sydney in 1994 | RetroFocus

Officials wrestled a man to the ground after he fired two blank shots and appeared to lurch at then-Prince Charles while the future king was visiting Sydney ...

I thought they were very slow to get to their protectee tbh

Of course they had vests on, they are bodyguards, what on earth are you on about? 😩😂 Trump probably also had one.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 14/07/2024 19:22

Several.years ago there was a 'shooting' (possibly blank bullets, I don't remember the details) at Prince Charles and all the bodyguards threw him to the ground and covered him with their bodies. It was an instant reaction.

boxwithacat · 14/07/2024 19:25

Lellochip · 14/07/2024 19:06

It's how they protect their target, though I was just thinking what a terrible job they did, didn't cover him well at all. Someone could've quite easily got in a few more shots while he was doing his little victory first pumps, shoddy bodyguarding!

Yes, and the female bodyguard was quite short so she didn’t cover his head. But she protected his body.

Psychoticbreak · 14/07/2024 19:27

Yeah it is literally what they do. I have dated 2 security detail/bodyguards in the past (briefly) and it was what they are trained for.

Totoe · 14/07/2024 19:29

Do they get paid a lot?

Do they get paid a lot?

Not much more than other security personnel.

Might they be wearing bullet proof vests?

Exactly my thoughts. If they were bodyguards then I would have thought so!

I met a bodyguard when a famous person was at a local bookshop. He had taken a bullet for someone. He was British. He was a really interesting guy. Bodyguards are paid to do their job and sometimes that is what is required of their job. They’re lunatics for doing it, but that’s their job. Where they live isn’t relevant.

OnTheShelfie · 14/07/2024 19:36

Totoe · 14/07/2024 19:29

Do they get paid a lot?

This seems to depend on the job. I know someone who does something similar on ships defending certain boats against piracy and he is paid a lot of money.

RandomUsernameHere · 14/07/2024 19:38

I understand where you're coming from OP, as in their lives are no less valuable than his. That has nothing to do with not being a Trump fan, you could say that about anyone. I find it a strange concept too. On the other hand, they know what the job entails and are prepared to do it.

AzureAnt · 14/07/2024 19:39

Yes that's why they are bodyguards
I remember a few years ago someone got too close to Prince Charles, I think he was making a speech. His protection officers surrounded him with lightning speed

Andthereitis · 14/07/2024 19:43

Former prime ministers get a police person.
The London Bus tour guide used to point out the one stood outside Mrs Thatcher's house.

xyzabcde · 14/07/2024 19:43

FannyFifer · 14/07/2024 18:45

Yes, it would be the same here, it's literally their job to potentially take a bullet to protect the person they are guarding.

There are the same sort here - but far less obvious.

I was a small cog in a state/political visit.

Both US and UK staff. As a generalisation.
US ones more obvious, thought everyone was called Rodger, crew cut hair but not shaved, bulging pockets. Eyes everywhere.
UK ones. Think fireman in a suit, normal looking, air of competence, quietly self assured. Slight bulge to pockets. Again eyes everywhere.

Both lots got a bit over excited when knives + scissors were found in odd places in the Church. It was the local bobby who sorted/explained it. - It was there various flower arrangers had worked sorting out displays and vases.

DonnaChang · 14/07/2024 19:43

I get your point, OP.

Sad that the lives of several are valued more than that of one famous person.

Those CIA agents last night looked terrified.

BMW6 · 14/07/2024 19:43

Totoe · 14/07/2024 19:29

Do they get paid a lot?

Those hired by private wealthy people do.

State appointed not nearly so much. I imagine a person who served as a Royal Protection Officer could name their price when they leave service to work privately, so we'll worthwhile financially in the long run.

Thank you, this is how I feel. I had thought of bodyguards as people who would take down attackers and might get injured or even killed in the process, but hadn’t really considered that in a situation where taking down the attacker isn't possible they would be expected to just stand in the line of fire to be killed instead of the famous person.

OP posts:
Ponderingwindow · 14/07/2024 19:45

That is the job of a secret service agent.

the only person a president or former president has to take orders from is their secret service detail. The bodyguards are risking their lives and in exchange the person being protected has to follow their orders to stay safe.

if you watch the video, Trump was not doing a very good job following their commands. He got a great photo though so I see why he did it.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 14/07/2024 19:48

Have you seen the “fake arms” lads King Charles uses ?

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 14/07/2024 19:49

Here’s a pic…Weird bulge, weird clenched fake hand…
