To have grudging respect for how Trump styled it out

I mean someone tried to murder him, he came very close to having died. He went through a terrifying experience and came out saying fight and raising his fist in defiance. I think he’s an odious man but despite that, I have to concede a nod to that.

Let’s face it, if this had happened to Obama and he’d responded in the same way we’d all be like ‘woah, he the man!’

Note. This is not a genuine AIBU. I’m confident in my position on this but know so many people have so polarized themselves that they would rather eat their own eyeballs than find any small compliment or recognition for someone they hate.

Agree OP. Very brave man.

MrsSchrute · 14/07/2024 18:18

Was it not just a stress reaction? The fight of fight or flight fame?
Don't see what makes it admirable.

DelythBeautyQueen · 14/07/2024 18:21

I think he did himself a lot of favours with the way he reacted and will gain a lot of support.

DanielGault · 14/07/2024 18:22

He was too thick to process what was happening. As usual. How anyone can have an iota of admiration for him I do not know.

Really?? He was shot and left the stage quickly with his security. What makes him brave? He didn't do anything

Would you have said the same if a politician you supported have resonded this way after an attempted assassination? Be honest with yourself?

it clearly was not a stress reaction. Under a high stress situation he maintained a focus on his personality and key value. Fighting is his key value. Remember when it was him vs Clinton and an audience member asked what do you admire about the other, ( a question which draws out the respondent’s key value), and he said, ‘she’s a fighter’. And he had the presence of mind And focus to quickly turn this to his political advantage.

There's absolutely nothing about him to admire. He is an odious man who is stirring up a civil war.

JamSandle · 14/07/2024 18:27

I thought he was courageous.

Obama was absolutely the man. I miss his presidency the world seemed much more optimistic.

AllTipAndNoIceberg · 14/07/2024 18:28

yeah — I 100% think he’s awful, but he certainly converted it with remarkable efficiency into a moment that will serve him well.

It feels strange and uncomfortable to be thinking of what happened as a kind of ‘well played’ moment. I don’t want to think of it that way — I mean, an innocent person died. But I guess we are all too media literate not to be aware of that perspective, despite ourselves.

Ladyslip · 14/07/2024 18:29

As I expected, this thread has brought the eyeball eaters to the yard.

If you have to sink to ‘there’s a sentient human whose to thick to understand being shot at is dangerous’ then you really are at the bottom of the barrel yourself.

He sure did. Sorry you are so blinded by prejudice you can’t admit that.

He was running on adrenaline, and did everything wrong, showed no self control or training at all. He was sticking his head out without knowing how many snipers there were, or where they were! His guards were desperately trying to reign him in, but he was out of control. No sense, no self control, no response to training

No, I don't admire him. If there had been two shooters, he would have been killed. He is an idiot. Most people know it

The middle east doesn't miss him.

bottomsup48 · 14/07/2024 18:32

You're being quite defensive and borderline rude op, for someone who claims not to like the man.

He will gain a lot of support for his reaction but not sure that's a good thing.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 14/07/2024 18:33

He shouted "fight" last time he uttered such words, the capitol was stormed by his mindless zombie fans.

Obama would have styled it out with grace and decorum. Not attempting to incite further violence by telling his fans to "fight".

SpudleyLass · 14/07/2024 18:33

I agree OP.

If he hadn't turned his head at the precise second he did, he would have been killed.

To have walked away from that and still showed mental presence for his supporters, well that is going down in the history books, no matter what anybody says.

That is PRECISELY what makes him so dangerous.

Ladyslip · 14/07/2024 18:30

Oh Ffs I'm not blinded by any prejudice. So you know my opinions on American politics. I dont bloody think so

It's a genuine question. What was brave and courageous about being huckled off the stage by your security. Obviously they did the right thing by getting him to a place of safety no question about it but I don't see what makes Trump brave

Cuppapuppa · 14/07/2024 18:33

I know what you mean but think it’s likely he was in shock and hadn’t actually processed what had happened. But then he is very presidential and that’s what a president would do in an action movie!

I agree, he was in shock and not behaving sensibly. Chock a block full of adrenaline and looking for someone to punch - like that would have helped against another shooter.

Be thankful he wasn't killed, then.

His supporters would not have been happy.
