To have grudging respect for how Trump styled it out

I mean someone tried to murder him, he came very close to having died. He went through a terrifying experience and came out saying fight and raising his fist in defiance. I think he’s an odious man but despite that, I have to concede a nod to that.

Let’s face it, if this had happened to Obama and he’d responded in the same way we’d all be like ‘woah, he the man!’

Note. This is not a genuine AIBU. I’m confident in my position on this but know so many people have so polarized themselves that they would rather eat their own eyeballs than find any small compliment or recognition for someone they hate.

Was it not just a stress reaction? The fight of fight or flight fame?
Don't see what makes it admirable.

Give over, give the man credit where credit is due.

Crunchymum · 14/07/2024 19:24

Lots of rumblings (from certain fractions) of it being staged.

Wouldn't put it past him but it was pretty chilling to watch.

Where has that been credibly reported?

The man has balls of steel.

I don’t agree. I think he is thin-skinned to an almost pathological degree.

EsmaCannonball · 14/07/2024 19:24

BruceAndNosh · 14/07/2024 19:21

No, if there were 2 shooters his Secret Service detail would have taken the bullet for him because he refused to leave the stage, always looking for a photo op

Yes, it's bad enough being the bodyguard who has to take the bullet for the president but taking the bullet for a president who refuses to exit the scene is another level of wrong.

YANBU.

I would never dream of voting for Trump, and I hope he loses the election, but he showed extraordinary resilience yesterday in what must have been a terrifying situation and instinctively turned it to his advantage within seconds. He is a natural showman, campaigner & communicator which is why he has been so successful in business, media & politics. Along with industrial scale lying & fraud, obv…

NoSuchThingAsTooManyDogs · 14/07/2024 19:25

For what is worth I think Starmer would have done what training and protocol dictate rather than risking the lives of everyone around him.

No one knows how they would react in a high stress, life of death situation. You can do all the training, but it can all go out the window in the moment, even for someone like Starmer who seems sensible and calm.

He was too thick to process what was happening. As usual. How anyone can have an iota of admiration for him I do not know.

Sadly he is anything but thick. He knows exactly what to say to which people in order to appeal to them to get voted in.

ByWarmShark · 14/07/2024 19:27

I think it proves he's a genuine psychopath. Genuine psychopaths get off on the adrenaline of situations like that and are nearly always calm in a crisis (and can therefore be weirdly 'heroic' even though they are also pyschopaths)

Successful in business? You’ll have to explain that one.
Turning a situation like that to his advantage is deplorable, not admirable. Your view seems a bit skewed.

Well, that sounds like utter nonsense.

Duckyfondant · 14/07/2024 19:27

Eurgh, no. He was trying to incite thoughtless, reactionary violence. Nothing admirable about it

I’m not a conspiracy theorist in the slightest. But I have my doubts about all of this…I don’t trust Trump. He’s a dirty, sneaky, sex offender and I don’t trust this was as it seems…

Fair. I was saying what I feel would be likely given my knowledge of him. The post I responded to seemed to be a baseless attack.

Didn't he lose millions in business? He didn't understand what was happening and I suspect it's not the first time. He's got a brass neck and that seems to be enough to win people over. It's depressing.

He was running on adrenaline, and did everything wrong, showed no self control or training at all. He was sticking his head out without knowing how many snipers there were, or where they were! His guards were desperately trying to reign him in, but he was out of control. No sense, no self control, no response to training

No, I don't admire him. If there had been two shooters, he would have been killed. He is an idiot. Most people know it

Yes this

This is the most nuts thread I've ever sen on here.

Inmydreams88 · 14/07/2024 19:29

This makes me sick with worry that it will somehow cement his win. If Trump gets in he will leave NATO, stop funding to Ukraine, Ukraine will fall and it’s pretty much a given this could lead Europe into WW3, there’s too much at stake for Trump to win.

I think it will. I think this will secure his win.

Thing is, didn’t his recent conviction mean he isn’t allowed to know any state secrets? How’s it going to work?!

Ladyslip · 14/07/2024 19:30

cardibach · 14/07/2024 19:21

But that’s not at all admirable…

Well we can disagree on that then.

My grudging respect is for his ability, despite a very nearly successful murder attempt, to hold his focus on his goals and turn the situation. to his advantage. It’s not about whether his goal is admirable, nor how he’s achieving it. My grudging respect is Just fir his ability to maintain that presence of mind under a terrifying and high stress situation.

RisingSunn · 14/07/2024 19:30

OP I have to admit that I somewhat agree with you.

I think Trump brings great dishonour to the US presidency.

However, to have that presence of mind to energise his supporters in the midst of that - will - whether we like it or not - garner him even more support.

Though, I have to agree with the poster that said he put his secret service staff in unnecessary danger doing so. So as usual - very reckless with it.

Georgyporky · 14/07/2024 19:31

It did cross my mind that this was a put-up job that went wrong.
