To have grudging respect for how Trump styled it out

I mean someone tried to murder him, he came very close to having died. He went through a terrifying experience and came out saying fight and raising his fist in defiance. I think he’s an odious man but despite that, I have to concede a nod to that.

Let’s face it, if this had happened to Obama and he’d responded in the same way we’d all be like ‘woah, he the man!’

Note. This is not a genuine AIBU. I’m confident in my position on this but know so many people have so polarized themselves that they would rather eat their own eyeballs than find any small compliment or recognition for someone they hate.

He's a very lucky man. Brave? Meh. Defiant? Absolutely. I'm not sure I find any of his character traits admirable, but I hope he's counting his blessings tonight, as well as finding room in that self centred world of his to think of the families of the dead and injured.

I doubt it tbh.

Notaflippinclue · 14/07/2024 19:02

Narcissist/thick/idiot/odious, ooooh ladies calm down, defame him drag him through the courts and now assassination, I'm afraid it seems they can't stop him becoming president of the United States

Bakersdozens · 14/07/2024 19:03

Ladyslip · 14/07/2024 18:57

You are Queen of the eyeball eaters.

Not only are you unable to give any credit in any situation to someone you hate, but you tell yourself it’s impossible for anyone else to do so.

Remarkable level of inadequacy of character.

He doesn't deserve any credit, he behaved like a moron, if the shooter was still alive when Trump was sticking his head up and behaving like a target, then Trump might be directly responsible for the other death and injuries.

Are you still going to praise him if this turns out to be true? And if his behaviour didn't lead directly to the other death and serious injuries, then, that was more by luck than judgement.

He fucked up badly. His security fucked up really badly. He is alive by luck, and someone else is dead because of these fuck ups

TwigletsAndRadishes · 14/07/2024 19:04

I agree with everything you said OP.

cardibach · 14/07/2024 19:06

ClownsFear · 14/07/2024 18:38

I agree. You can imagine many other people (me included) being so shit scared they would crawl on their hands and knees in a panic towards the exit.

Once he'd collected himself and stood up to have the presence of mind and courage to raise a fist in defiance - turning to the crowd 'through' the wall of secret service around him - is amazingly brave and shows a lot of leadership mind set. Very few people I think would be able to do that and at that speed.

I don't like his policies but I totally respect him for that. It's amazing actually and I wouldn't describe my respect as grudging at all.

That aspect of his character - fearless and brave under pressure and showing leadership not to be cowed and to show the people that he was not to be suppressed by fear - is what we all need in our leaders.

How do you think Liz Truss or Joe Biden or Rishi Sunak would react in that situation?

Compare that to how you think Princess Anne or Margaret Thatcher would have reacted.

Whatever you think of them as people or politicians, its a certain type of bravery of character that isn't common.

It doesn’t show bravery. It shows narcissistic idiocy. Putting everyone at risk. He’ll have been trained what to do and it’s not that - he really doesn’t care about anything but his ‘image’. Vile, vile, dangerous, vile man.

Justcallmebebes · 14/07/2024 19:06

Bakersdozens · 14/07/2024 19:00

most people would react instinctively, with adrenaline, the way Trump did, the point is, he should know better, he should have had training, and he should have adhered to it

He did though, he dropped to the ground, exactly how he was trained to do and to be fair, no one knows how they would react in similar circumstances. And in his first speech from the hospital he thanked the SS and sent condolences to the injured and deceased and didn't mention his own injuries

You may hate him and disagree with his politics but surely you can have some compassion and give the guy a break. Why all the hate and sneering? It's vile

Projection much?
For what is worth I think Starmer would have done what training and protocol dictate rather than risking the lives of everyone around him.

SpudleyLass · 14/07/2024 18:33

I agree OP.

If he hadn't turned his head at the precise second he did, he would have been killed.

To have walked away from that and still showed mental presence for his supporters, well that is going down in the history books, no matter what anybody says.

That is PRECISELY what makes him so dangerous.

Yup. He's an odious narcissistic vile human being who will bring big trouble to our world.

But as someone who has actually been shot at in real life, I can agree his response was incredible.

It's hilarious how the mumsnet mafia who have never been in a dangerous situation in their life, will still say he wasn't brave.

Yeah it was probably adrenaline and yeah very probably stupid but still fucking brave!

It is an iconic picture which will (sadly) serve him well.

Freeasabird76 · 14/07/2024 19:08

I'm of the opinion that he probably set it up himself, couldn't get better press than this.

Makeaiminggreatagain · 14/07/2024 19:08

So incredibly close. Someone was looking over him today. Wonder how he’s doing in private, it must be pretty sobering.

Inmydreams88 · 14/07/2024 19:09

Didn’t he immediately duck down putting those behind him in the firing line?

Poolstream · 14/07/2024 19:09

Sosorryliver · 14/07/2024 18:28

Obama was absolutely the man. I miss his presidency the world seemed much more optimistic.

He was certainly number 1 at killing civilians with drones.

GingerScallop · 14/07/2024 19:09

Kinneddar · 14/07/2024 18:26

Really?? He was shot and left the stage quickly with his security. What makes him brave? He didn't do anything

Leaving is protocol as security have to check if threat is ongoing and not risk other lives. His security are govt employees. But yes, odious stinky man

Trump thinking only about himself as usual. I guess you have to admire his single-mindedness and ability to recognise a good photo opp.

This is rather my point.

Well let's see you get shot in the head then and see how you react

Firstly, let's see me get shot in the head?? What?
Secondly, however I reacted would be an automatic response, exactly like Trump. Nothing to be either proud or ashamed of.

I've never been shot at but I have been in plenty of dangerous situations (including being held at knife point by a smack head)

I still think he's an odious little man who is stirring a country towards civil war.

cardibach · 14/07/2024 19:10

SpudleyLass · 14/07/2024 18:52

But only for 4 more years, because after that, he won't be able to run for President again.

Unless he changes the rules. I don’t trust him not to.

NoSuchThingAsTooManyDogs · 14/07/2024 19:10

I think his reaction was probably through shock and adrenaline but also wanting to show people that he was ok. It was a terrible thing to happen and you can't know how you'll react in a very bad situation like this until it happens. I wouldn't judge anyone's reaction in a high stress situation.

TorroFerney · 14/07/2024 19:11

Ladyslip · 14/07/2024 18:30

He sure did. Sorry you are so blinded by prejudice you can’t admit that.

You want to watch the footage of the King (then Prince Charles ) getting shot at, the only tell he is in the slightest rattled is when he twiddles with his cuffs.

Eastcoastie · 14/07/2024 19:11

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 14/07/2024 18:33

He shouted "fight" last time he uttered such words, the capitol was stormed by his mindless zombie fans.

Obama would have styled it out with grace and decorum. Not attempting to incite further violence by telling his fans to "fight".

Edited

Do you think that Biden incited the shooting 8 days ago when he said this, '“I have one job, and that’s to beat Donald Trump... it’s time to put Trump in a bullseye” - or do mindless zombies only exist on the ring wing?

Ultimately, whatever Trump, Biden, anyone else says, that doesnt take away personal responsibility. I always used to get told as a child if XX told you to jump off a cliff would you do it? Its just the same. If someone says do something, its up to you to decide whether to follow through.

Rainbowsponge · 14/07/2024 19:11

I think previously people assumed he was bluster, and that he wasn’t as hard as he made himself out to be… but I think he is now Hmm

seriously? I expect he was a jibbering wreck later that night - no disrespect, but that is normal - first a surge of adrenaline, then the reaction to adrenaline crash

Cardamomandlemons · 14/07/2024 19:15

I do remember thinking that he has incredible instincts for visual images.
I mean I despise what he stands for (and equally deplore political violence), but he does have an incredibly sharp instinct for the power of a visual image.
(I don't approve of this instinct. But it's impossible to ignore, it makes him dangerous).
