To have grudging respect for how Trump styled it out

I mean someone tried to murder him, he came very close to having died. He went through a terrifying experience and came out saying fight and raising his fist in defiance. I think he’s an odious man but despite that, I have to concede a nod to that.

Let’s face it, if this had happened to Obama and he’d responded in the same way we’d all be like ‘woah, he the man!’

Note. This is not a genuine AIBU. I’m confident in my position on this but know so many people have so polarized themselves that they would rather eat their own eyeballs than find any small compliment or recognition for someone they hate.

Oh come off it - had that been Starmer etc you wouldn’t be saying that.

The lefties have really discredited themselves with their reactions to this if I’m honest

I’m a lib dem voting, pro EU globalist and centrist, by the way, not a Trump supporter or a right wing populist. The politicians I admire come from across the spectrum - but they all have unshakable conviction in their beliefs, they don’t chop and change according to how palatable they find the subject.

saveforthat · 14/07/2024 19:16

I can't stand Trump but I did have a little moment thinking "Wow, he handled that quite well". Of course you duck if you are being shot at. I think I would be a quivering wreck if someone shot my ear

Narcissist/thick/idiot/odious, ooooh ladies calm down, defame him drag him through the courts and now assassination, I'm afraid it seems they can't stop him becoming president of the United States

He defiles himself.
He wouldn’t be ‘dragged’ through the courts if he’d stop breaking the law.
He’s vile, and assuming you are female he has nothing but contempt for you and openly wants to take away your rights.
All that said, why on earth would you want him to be president? Why would anyone?

GeraniumJenny · 14/07/2024 19:17

The truly brave man was the 50 year old behind him who jumped on top of his family and took the bullet meant for Trump.

Not Trump then…he says and does whatever he thinks will get him elected (in public…when he thinks he’s in private he says vile, sexist things). How can you admire him?

Osory · 14/07/2024 19:19

He's a scary guy.. shouting"fight fight" after been shot just reinforces it for me. he has no respect at all for democracy, law and order, terrifying the thought of him getting in

Atethehalloweenchocs · 14/07/2024 19:20

There are some iconic photos of him, and I think it does look good for him that he was fist pumping etc. Wanting his shoes just shows how vain he is, and how much he did not care about exposing his security to unnecessary threat. And there is one picture of him with his face twisted up where he looks so full of hate. I found it chilling.

WorriedMama12 · 14/07/2024 19:20

The man has balls of steel.

OriginalUsername2 · 14/07/2024 19:20

I thought he was being a bit stupid at the time. People were risking their lives for him and he was poking his head and arms out like an idiot.

He got some great photos out of it though. The blood, the fist and the flag make a powerful image.

cardibach · 14/07/2024 19:21

Ladyslip · 14/07/2024 19:10

This is rather my point.

But that’s not at all admirable…

GingerScallop · 14/07/2024 19:21

Kai125 · 14/07/2024 19:08

Yup. He's an odious narcissistic vile human being who will bring big trouble to our world.

But as someone who has actually been shot at in real life, I can agree his response was incredible.

It's hilarious how the mumsnet mafia who have never been in a dangerous situation in their life, will still say he wasn't brave.

Yeah it was probably adrenaline and yeah very probably stupid but still fucking brave!

It is an iconic picture which will (sadly) serve him well.

The thing is people want everything in black and white. If you detest the man then you cannot acknowledge anything that he is doing that is working for him. I detest the man and what he stands for. But you don't trick millions of Americans into voting for you unless you have some capacity and not just a complete idiot. Bear in mind, until a few years ago, many of the same democrats, liberals were at his parties, inviting him to theirs. Lauding him as a great American. Part of the reason people were shocked at his election in 2016 is that people were not looking at him and saying he has a tactic and its working. He has a message (wrong or right) that is connecting with a huge section of Americans. Among them poor, disenfranchised. I recall being up in the night during those debates and thinking, I can walk away and say what his key message is but I cannot do the same for Hilary. And I was dismissed by friends to say say, he is an idiot. But an idiot (if he is) with a plan and a message that connects is more dangerous than a complacent genius without a plan and who does not connect. Sadly I was proved right. And so far, the Dems made the same mistake. Where are the journalists who kept saying that saying Biden is too old and often confused is a right wing conspiracy? Where are the ones who wanted legal action against Special Counselor Hur because he said Biden was often forgetful and confused when asked about the poorly stored documents? A similar issue happened here during the Brexit campaign. Yes there may have been meddling but there was a lot of complacency because people don't realise how disenfranchised others feel. And disenfranchised people are often angry people (rightly so) and dont want the key message being cruising down the Thames drinking champagne with billionaires while the other guy is at a pub sharing a beer.
One of the biggest dangers to democracy in the West is not Putin. Its eco chambers and a media that revels in it! And we all sail away with them

Sosorryliver · 14/07/2024 18:28

Obama was absolutely the man. I miss his presidency the world seemed much more optimistic.

Obama = nice man, terrible policies.
Trump = unpleasant man, good policies.

EsmaCannonball · 14/07/2024 19:21

He was more worried about being photographed without his shoes than he was about the safety of his security detail or the crowd so, no, I didn't admire his reaction.

This is likely to win him the election though. It's awful to have to think this way but that gunman did him a massive favour.

It's not that he has no respect for it, I genuinely think he has no understanding of it. He is like an overgrown toddler who will demand his own way. As you say, a scary guy.

BruceAndNosh · 14/07/2024 19:21

Bakersdozens · 14/07/2024 18:32

He was running on adrenaline, and did everything wrong, showed no self control or training at all. He was sticking his head out without knowing how many snipers there were, or where they were! His guards were desperately trying to reign him in, but he was out of control. No sense, no self control, no response to training

No, I don't admire him. If there had been two shooters, he would have been killed. He is an idiot. Most people know it

Edited

No, if there were 2 shooters his Secret Service detail would have taken the bullet for him because he refused to leave the stage, always looking for a photo op

tennesseewhiskey1 · 14/07/2024 19:22

OP - you won’t find much on Mumsnet agreeing with anything remotely praising Trump. The guy could be dead and still you’ll get nothing. Not that he wasn’t going to win the presidency already - but this has probably cemented it.

Clafoutie · 14/07/2024 19:22

I see what you’re saying OP, and it is good for us to be aware of hypocrisy. I think though, that in the case of Trump, he is so reprehensible -and so dangerous- that it goes beyond just not agreeing with his politics. I’d be prepared to give credit where due/praise courage for any politician I didn’t agree with, but also feel it is a big ask to give credit to someone who is so lacking in morals. I’m sure it was a frightening experience for him, and I don’t wish that on someone else, but that’s as far as I could go.

SallyWD · 14/07/2024 19:22

He was shocked, full of adrenaline then after several minutes ducking down he said "fight". I don't see what's so brave or admirable about that? I mean even if it was brave, everything else about him and what he represents is so odious that I really don't care.

pambeesleyhalpert · 14/07/2024 19:22

Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he set it up himself

I'm not a trump fan, but wouldn't you duck down if you were shot at.

TamingofShrews · 14/07/2024 19:23

I begrudgingly agree

Well according to lots of people on this thread, such responses are ‘just adrenaline’ and deserve no credit.
