@daisychain01 democrats are left of centre, republicans are right of centre but the US centre isn't the same as the UK centre. So the whole lot is shifted a few positions to the right compared to our politics.

Things we take for granted like the welfare state are controversial in the US. There are people who don't believe government should exist at all, leave everything to individuals.

Yeah but the general theme is the same with them. The left are more predisposed to a welfare state, the right aren't. The difference in the US as far as I understand it anyway, is that the sides are full of wide ranging views, so much so as to be almost meaningless. And if you do take a position that is even vaguely controversial, you're seen as some sort of batshit, out there person. I prefer the UK system tbh.

I guess that's inevitable in a two party system attempting to sum up views in such a massive and varied country.

Totally. But I have to say I don't quite understand the two party system for such a huge country.

I predict that the USA splits into at least 2 separate countries under Trump's 2nd term.

How exactly do you see that playing out and along what state lines?

If you consider that most republican states are very pro death penalty then that wouldn't align with centre / right would it?

You can't decide who is more left or right by just deciding based on one item, or in some cases even just plotting certain things as left or right will run you into trouble.

You can find pro-death governments, I am sure you can think of some examples. And within political parties you may find a general consensus, but can also often find outliers on these questions.

It's much like Euro-scepticism - many issues can be found on the left and right, sometimes for different reasons.

One of the things about the US that differs from the UK is that the kind of small c conservatism that isn't so much about individualism as about a set of social classes and groups working together, doesn't have much of a tradition in the US. Overall, both the DEmocrats and the Republicans are quite libertarian. The exception might be parts of the Old Southern Democrat tradition, which has some similarities to conservatism in the British tradition.

But the modern Democrats are more comparable to the Lib Dems than Labour, IMO.

Emmanuelll · 15/07/2024 17:11

Yes, you do have to understand what he might do next, but that's the whole point isn't it? You have to understand that other leaders don't necessarily have the same values as the UK. That doesn't mean you start making excuses for dictators.

There are far too many Putin simps for my liking and I'm just calling it out. Why do you think Blair has ruined his legacy? Because he helped to start an illegal war which most of the UK was against.

Clearly, this has been a stressful line to tread since the beginning of the invasion because of Russia's nuclear weapons. A wrong move would be (would have been) catastrophic so I think you perhaps underestimate those making strategic decisions.

"Maybe he has reasons for things that aren't simply to be evil" = "I love Vlad he's my dreamboat".

This is the equivalence you're drawing here. Do you not think that's a bit silly?

I think the person who produced that was getting a little bit over-excited ...

"A shoe is just a shoe until someone steps into it". We may laugh in the UK at the nonsense of it all but the US is not the UK - 81% believe in God and this sort of heady proaganda will probaly find a welcome home - remember Michael Moore's warning in 2016 - I saw it at the time and I knew then he would win. Getting the same vibes now.

Yeah I saw it the night before the Trump shooting the President gets executed by the secesionist army in the final sequence though we never quite get to know how we got there except the President has had a third, obvioulsy unconstitutional term of office. Meanwhil we have fags and a pint Farage and milkshakes - I feel sadly comforted by that salient point !

Yes I agree. I don't think it's easy to compare the US with the UK either.

No. im not going to bother responding to people who are obviously ex-Qanoners any more. You can easily spot them by the language they use. Even my 4 year old daughter can see through some of the nonsense that these people believe in.

But I’m certainly not going to have any respect for anyone who tries to justify Putin’s actions. I know Ukrainians who have lost their homes and family members because of him.

Also Republicans blaming Biden for the assassination attempt is equally conspiracy theory bollocks:

www.telegraph.co.uk/us/news/2024/07/14/republicans-blame-biden-trump-assassination-attempt/

I agree but I think we all know that if Trump had made the same remarks and someone had attempted to assassinate Biden the Democrats would have used it as evidence that Trump is an existential threat to national security, global peace and democracy.

1dayatatime · 15/07/2024 20:25

@FOJN

"I agree but I think we all know that if Trump had made the same remarks and someone had attempted to assassinate Biden the Democrats would have used it as evidence that Trump is an existential threat to national security, global peace and democracy"

I agree that there is a media bias on these matters against the right wing.

It reminds me of a comment by Jo Brand about Nigel Farage saying "throw battery acid not milkshakes ". This is not humour it's incitement to violence.

amp.theguardian.com/culture/2019/jun/12/farage-furious-over-jo-brands-throw-battery-acid-not-milkshake-joke

Imagine the media reaction if Farage
has suggested that battery acid be thrown at someone.

Uncomfortable as it is, I am starting to think that the hard left poses a greater threat to society, order and democracy than the hard right does.

Emmanuelll · 15/07/2024 20:34

This assassination attempt is more likely to be due to mental illness than any political affiliation. If past assassinations / attempted assassinations are anything to go by.
