Do you think Mexico or Canada would be free to join an armed alliance with China if they so wished? China could then start among and training Mexican/Canadian troops.
The Monroe doctrine means the US will respond with military force to any foreign power trying to gain a foothold within Americas sphere of influence. They define their sphere of influence as the entire western hemisphere.
Russia's demands were that Ukraine remained neutral. That's not unusual

We already know exactly what would happen if a rival power set up shop in a neighboring country to the US.

There was a crisis about it few years ago, in fact. Something to do with missiles in Cuba. I forget what they ended up calling it though...

Wasn't that also to do with placing nuclear weapons on Cuban soil where they could reach everywhere in the US? (bit out of date now)

Whereas Ukraine... Got rid of their nuclear weapons... In exchange for the US, the UK and gosh.. RUSSIA, promising to uphold their sovereignty. And wasn't there some recent snafu where Russia seemed uncertain over this?
Not really the same.

biscuitandcake · 15/07/2024 08:23

If Cuba had Had its own nuclear weapons, and then got rid of them on the promise that America would not invade. And then America invaded that would have been called "America acting like arseholes crisis" not the Cuban missiles crisis.

This mistake was dealt with. FTFT. You just wasted some decent snark, which should be a crime in my book. Snark should never be treated so callously.

I'm with you on snark wasting. Trump has an unnatural fear of snarks - if the shooter had dressed up in snark costume he might have got away with it.

There is something weird and off about the whole thing. Donald Trump is the king of misinformation and fake news. I think it’s ok to discuss concerns and misgivings about the incident. There seems to a lot of Trump supporters crawling out of the woodwork to shut that down.

The issue I have is with conspiracy theorists putting out fake news either for deliberate political gain or because they are misguided and it makes them feel "edgy or smarter" when the reality is they really aren't smart and just the type to either join a cult or buy into a time share scam.

Such conspiracy theorists work on the basis that if they get their theory out early then it plants doubt and hopefully gains traction. This is why they need to be shut down early.

Lastly it's rather ironic to label Trump as the King of fake news (which to be fair he is guilty of) but to then push your own conspiracy theories/ fake news.

TheFirmBiscuit · 15/07/2024 09:07

3 black trucks despatched to the home of Senator JD Vance - increasingly looking like Trump will announce his running mate at the RNC. It's going to be one hell of a MAGA Fest. If Trump doesn't fluff this he's probably home and dry.

shuggles · 14/07/2024 20:54

@Messageinathrottle Pretty sure that was a casual link.

@XChrome You'd have to show me a casual link between jokes about a politician getting shot and politicians actually being shot for me to draw that conclusion.

It's a "causal" link.

"Causal" means relating to cause and effect.

"Casual" is when you wear your jeans instead of formal trousers.

Yes I know the difference, which is why I agreed that the initial poster, who was linking jokes and assassinations, was making a casual link, due to the speculative, unsubstantiated and conversational nature of their post. It was very petty of me 🙃 sorry.

Some Americans are not at all convinced that Trump is as popular as people are making out on this thread. Apparently, recent polls suggest that he'd be easily beaten by Hilary Clinton or Kamala Harris even.

The MAGA movement has its own cult. It's silly to assume this assassination attempt will make people think he's great and forget all the awful ways in which he's conducted himself publicly.

Boris Johnson wouldn't suddenly regain popularity in such a situation after partygate for example.

Emmanuelll · 15/07/2024 10:00

Russia still doesn't get to invade Ukraine and have people like you trying to justify it.

If he's not popular and has no chance of getting in, why has his party nominated him?

Emmanuelll · 15/07/2024 10:04

I don't know, I'm not American. This popped up on my YT yesterday.

When you add in JFK Jnr / Cornell and Jill Stein chipping away at Biden's core vote far more tha Trump then you have a Reform situation where Dem alternatives kill Biden's vote share.

BadLad · 15/07/2024 10:13

Emmanuelll · 15/07/2024 10:04

I don't know, I'm not American. This popped up on my YT yesterday.

But politics doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Clinton isn’t running, so she can keep out of the spotlight. If she were running, she’d have to campaign, make speeches, debate, have her life under scrutiny etc, and her lack of likeability would again become apparent. She would have the Trump campaign making sure her faults were brought to everybody’s attention.

I don’t think this shooting is the election sealing event that some people do, but I do think it helps Trump portray himself as strong, active and fearless as opposed to the decrepit, ailing and senile Biden.

Emmanuelll · 15/07/2024 10:24

Yes but a lot of Americans will remember how stupid he proved himself to be - for example, suggesting people drink bleach to kill off Covid.

David Pakman seems pretty hopeful anyway. And the election is not until November.

In 2016, Trump was an unknown quantity but this time around, people know exactly what they are going to get another 4 years of.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 15/07/2024 10:32

Lastly it's rather ironic to label Trump as the King of fake news (which to be fair he is guilty of) but to then push your own conspiracy theories/ fake news

True enough, but then it's perhaps even more ironic to see folk insist that Trump's rhetoric led to the Capitol attacks, and yet that the Democrats' rhetoric that he's a fascist who must be stopped at all costs had nothing to do with the attempted assassination

And this is the trouble with adopting extreme positions - when things go wrong they have an unfortunate habit of turning round and biting the holder

As for the US being "in an awful mess" if Trump's elected, I reall wouldn't worry all that much. Doubtless the media - and especially the SM version - will spout the usual hyperbole, but all those millions of decent ordinary Americans will muddle on just the same

I’m not a conspiracy theorist. I’ve never commented on American politics on a forum before.
I think it is naive to not acknowledge that rich, powerful and corrupt people will do whatever it takes to achieve their aim. Whether that aim is obtaining the ‘image that will change the history of the world’ or not.
I don’t think debate or questioning should be shut down.

The list is just to show the wide variety of ideologies and motives behind these kind of crimes. The person I responded to implied that all the attacks on Republicans were carried out by Democrats.

Ah, yes, I see. Nutters.

TempestTost · 15/07/2024 11:00

XChrome · 15/07/2024 02:47

Biden once said that white supremacists he knew on the other side of the aisle were good guys. 🤢
I agree that it only matters what their beliefs are now. Trump is a racist. Biden could be, but there isn't a much evidence supporting that. I only brought up Fred Trump to help explain how Trump became the man he is today.

It's true that the parties both had their share of racists until the Republicans implemented the Southern Strategy to become the party of southern bigots. They made a conscious choice to appeal to those people.

The Republicans were the antislavery party, and the Democrats very much the party of segregation, Jim Crow, and race essentialism.

Your description of why that changed, the "switch" in the parties positions, is one perspective - however there is also a perspective, one you find commonly among black conservatives, which says this "switch" never occurred. Rather, once blacks gained the vote, the Democrats quickly realized that they could essentially bribe that population - and had an interest in keeping them as a kind of underclass in order to keep them as a dependent voting block. It's a perspective that's gained some traction in the black community over the last few years for a number of reasons.

Trump was impeached for inciting an insurrection. His rhetoric did lead to the Capitol Hill riot. As far as I'm aware, Democrats aren't inciting violence against Trump and telling people to take pot shots at him.

You have to finish adding the rest of the detail on Trump's two impeachments.

The Senate acquitted him of the impeachment charges.

Both times.

Do you think he was innocent of any wrongdoing then? from the Guardian;

From the outset, Trump’s allies in the Senate made clear they had no intention of convicting him.

@tothesea

"I’m not a conspiracy theorist. I’ve never commented on American politics on a forum before. "

If not a conspiracy theory post then it could be simply batshit crazy. Look at number of evangelical right wing Christians in the US have posted that Trump was saved through divine intervention - now is that a conspiracy theory or just batshit crazy or did God really intervene to alter the trajectory of the bullet or was Trump just lucky the bullet missed his brain by about 2 centimetres? I prefer the reality of the latter.

"I think it is naive to not acknowledge that rich, powerful and corrupt people will do whatever it takes to achieve their aim. Whether that aim is obtaining the ‘image that will change the history of the world’ or not. "

Oh dear here we go again with the notion that there is some kind of secret capitalist group manipulating global events. Seriously if Trump can manage to shag a porn star and not be capable of covering it up then I think organising a fake shooting including the death of two people so far just in order to get a good photo opportunity and then keeping it all quiet is possibly stretching reality a bit far.

"I don’t think debate or questioning should be shut down."

Totally agree so long as it is based on reality and facts rather than batshit crazy conspiracy theories spawn from watching too many Netflix series. Otherwise it is simply an attempt to plant fake news early in the hope that seeds of doubt are planted against the truth and this should be shut down.

Not really the same.

The Soviet Union wanted to place missiles in China in response to the US placing missiles that could reach anywhere in the USSR in Turkey.
The US, Britain etc instigated a coup in Ukraine and overthrew a Democratically elected government. Then installed a puppet government which abandoned Ukraines neutrality to pursue Nato membership. How is that defending Ukraines sovereignty??
