To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

Maybe some campsites are not really suitable for some dogs.

I'd always choose a dog friendly one even if I didn't have my own, as I like dogs. I am wondering what would render one 'not suitable'? Guessing that any that don't allow dogs is just organisation/owner preference and obviously good that people who don't like dogs/are allergic/phobic can have the choice.

We were so
embarrassed, but also
young, early twenties, first dog. Taught us a lesson that dogs cannot reason, oh that lovely family will want their sausages. I shall walk away...

That said, they did set up their camp in the
designated dog walking area, who knows maybe they had a dog themselves? Long time ago now and we were so busy apologising and scooping up and appeasing them.

The best advice is to keep
your bags up high, if you can get a table it's better then assuming where you're sat on grass hasn't been peed on. Mind you I was holiday once in Benidorm where a lady lifted her daughter into a food table and changed her nappy. No where is sterile. I soon put my food in the bin.

Nowhere near as vile as that but I was in an Indian restaurant once and a family sat their small child, just in its nappy, on the table. I was shocked enough at that but they then proceeded to dip the kids hands in curry sauce and hold them so they could make curry hand prints on the mirrored wall.

Stop being so forceful.

There’s nothing forceful about fact. You really think that an animal who loves nothing more than rolling in smelly fox shit would care about being in a public toilet? 🤣

Malahide · 15/07/2024 13:39

Werweisswohin · 15/07/2024 11:17

Choosing to roll in poo isn't the same as being forced into a toilet block with a whole host of new smells, none of which they can react naturally to (i.e. roll in).

The key difference is that you’re human and have a completely different thought process. You likely find poo/urine smells unpleasant, dogs do not. They actively seek them out.

I took forceful as “ stop making valid points.” 🤣

In the example quoted, dogs are not allowed to be left alone in tents or taken into the loos, so logically they need to either be looked after by someone else or tied up outside. If these are the rules that the campsite have set and someone cannot abide by them, perhaps it isn’t suitable for them and their dog.

Afternoonteavirgin · 15/07/2024 14:11

Yes, I completely understand that.
I was more thinking would there be such a thing as a campsite that isn't suitable for dogs, period.

I was camping recently and no issues as there were two of us and we'd shower/go to the loo separately or one of us would wait outside the block with the dog.
I did notice quite a few people violating the rules about dogs (and kids!) in that some dogs were off lead when the campsite stipulated that they must be on leads at all times, and some were 'letting' their dog poo just outside their tent-I understand that it is difficult, you can't necessarily stop your dog pooing if they need to go, but I made sure I got up early each morning and zoomed down to the area nearby to walk the dog, to minimise that.. Some people just hung out at the tent all day and let their dog go whereever!

As a non dog-owner I'd happily be alongside a considerate dog owner like yourself. I'd rather keep away from those breaking rules and having no regard for others though.
All we ask is consideration.

Most of us responsible dog owners know they are not babies.

I am fed up of entitled dog haters thinking that they should be shielded from seeing a dog whenever they go out.

If a sign says "no dogs" That means your dog isn't allowed there. It's not "shielding", it's following instructions.

Dog's are everywhere at the moment.

Most of them are poorly trained and have entitled owners who think it's ok for their dog with 0 recall to be off lead.

And well behaved/controlled dogs are no problem. But many on MN are offended at the sight of seeing them. Which is really sad.

The problem is, most people don't know if the dog is a well behaved until it's too late. And let's face it, if a dog ran through my picnic to eat my food, I wouldn't class that as a well behaved dog, no matter how "excitable" it is, or how young and inexperienced the owners are. This is the problem.

Even the nicest dog can turn for no reason - look at what happened to the dog walker semi-recently.

It's fine to own an animal. It's not ok to make excuses for bad behaviour, bringing the dog where it's not allowed and just generally allowing it to be a nuisance because it's off lead with 0 recall.

But people complain that a well behaved dog in a dog friendly place is somehow in the wrong. All the time on MN. Some people just don't like seeing them in their line of vision.

Meanwhile some of us are fed up with meeting entitled dog owners every time we go out.
