To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

LittlePearDrop · 13/07/2024 08:28

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

Go in a different type of holiday then. Boring bloody anti dog threads 😴

🤣

Yes but as has been discussed at dons length in this thread there are logistical issues when their owner needs to if alone.
I just think the campsite hadn’t thought it through.

I agree with you that the campsite hasn't thought it through!

But the sign is there. We must obey the sign.

Anyway, this thread has been good company for me today whilst ill in bed, so appreciate the entertainment!

Werweisswohin · 14/07/2024 22:56

Has anyone considered that dogs, with their sensitive noses, might not really enjoy being taken into public loos either?

PixieLaLar · 14/07/2024 23:14

A sign saying “no dogs” means they think they can relax for a few minutes. Some people even chose places on this kind of basis, so that they’re less stressed. Let’s please respect that!

Oh yes that’s right, I can imagine all the dog phobics at this dog friendly campsite flock to the public toilets so they can relax 😂

‘Dog friendly’ doesn’t mean ‘dog compulsory’ or even ‘dogs are likely’.

If a campsite admits dogs, that’s it. No more, no less.

If a campsite is dedicated to dogs and their owners you wouldn’t get restrictions anyway. Are there many such places, sort of like nudist colonies are for those who like to be publicly naked, but for dog owners who like to shower and take number 2s with their dogs?

Copperoliverbear · 14/07/2024 23:28

I think the world is not safe enough to leave our dogs outside anymore and I'd rather be in a toilet with a dog than have to share a unisex toilet with a man, much safer in my opinion.

Copperoliverbear · 14/07/2024 23:32

@Tophelleborine I can tell you are not a dog person, but it's not about leaving them to cry, it's about the fact people are stealing dogs and god knows what life they have then, all because a thieving bastard decided to steal something that doesn't belong to them, that's why they can't be left outside.

Malahide · 14/07/2024 23:39

Dynamitepussycat · 14/07/2024 22:43

This. I am a dog owner but since lock down the dog situation is just nuts. People humanising them and not really knowing the first thing about them. The dog will be fine tied up outside a toilet block for a couple minutes. Not everyone wants wants other peoples stinky dogs invading their space!

Just because your dog is fine to leave tied up somewhere doesn’t mean that everyone else’s is. Our golden retriever would panic and become an anxious mess if we just abandoned her like that. Frankly it would be dangerous both for her and the surrounding public.

I wouldn’t even leave the most easy going dog tied up on their own nowadays - too many idiots around looking to pet/feed/steal them

Another OTT dog owner 🙄

It's not OTT to safeguard your dog - or the public that your dog might come into contact with while you're not there to have the legally required control over the dog.
I totally agree that if a place says no dogs, then it should be no dogs, I would respect that and find an alternative option, a crate in the tent, the car having run the air con to cool it down and leaving a note or 'word' with someone else around that I'd nipped to the loo and the car was an acceptable temperature for a few minutes in there.
What I'd not do is leave them tied up outside and alone where there's other people around and I can't see them. There are risks to them from other out of control dogs confronting them, people hurting them or stealing them.
And more importantly they could pose a risk when they are out of my control, and I am not there to ensure they are under control and not a risk to anyone else. Isn't that what half the argument is about dog owners? Lack of responsibility? Yet it's OTT to take that responsibility seriously?

No, just someone looking out for the welfare of both my animal and the general public. Sounds like you should try it.

your dog sounds like a hassle maybe you should leave it at home

It's very unpleasant to meet unexpected dog in a narrow enclosed space which is marked as dog free.
Stupid entitled dog owners.

Why though? The bathroom is marked as dog free.
It's basic manners to not bring your pets to a designated pet free space.

Honestly some people would try and cause an argument in an empty room. 🤣

Where's there hassle in doing the right thing when you're willing to take on the responsibility that comes with a dog? The law requires me to keep my dog under control at all times in public, regardless of if they're friendly, fine in themselves to be left or anything else, tying them up and walking into a building isn't doing that.

Like I said, it would seem we've sunk to a level where being a responsible dog owner and obeying signs/laws etc isn't good enough for some who are determined to try and goad anyone who has a dog as a bit of late night light entertainment 🤷🏼‍♀️ each to their own.

sarahd29 · 15/07/2024 06:02

I just want to add, my dogs are totally friendly but they have no sense. The first whiff of a sausage and they would be in your tent. I've actually seen them barrel through a picnic with no fear. I wouldn't take them in the loo, I wouldn't want to tie them up and I know they'd be irresponsible if given the chance.

I know their limitations, they go with the other person (like our kids we don't leave them) and if there is no other person into the car with the window open a crack for the ten minutes in takes to go to the toilet/shower. I appreciate someone said a dog was taken but that's the risk we also take leaving it tied up. I respect other people's right not to have animals near them.

I don't think there is anything so foul that a dog won't happily sniff it. Or eat it. Or roll in it....

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/07/2024 22:11

What twisting?

That seems to be the basics, and the one I forgot too, that people haaaaaaaate the idea that dog owners generally prioritise their own dog over random humans. Particularly the ones still in larval form.

But we are genetically programmed to care about our own species more than others. Failure to do so is unnatural, and the craze for treating dogs as surrogate humans is an indicator of a society in decline.

Well you don't if you've seen them barrel through picnics. I've had this and the dog stole a banana out of my hand. A fucking banana. I went mad at the owner who was a good 500 yards away. 🔔

It wasn't a question of "let" we were on the village green and they were happily chasing balls and being great. A family arrived and set up. Picnic blanket on the floor.
They got their sausages out and the
dogs were off. We ran after them shrieking. Of course we apologised profusely. Poor family, though I question their judgement eating on the floor of that particular park.

We are responsible people and there were a lot of repercussions about recall for us but even now 14 years and 5 dogs on..I wouldn't put it past any of them. Most people train their dogs with food. The point being I don't trust them and that's why I would put them safely in my car away from temptation and danger. I don't take them to places that people might not appreciate it for example the school run. They are dogs not people and we have to think of everyone.

Why question their judgement and not yours? If your dogs aren't 100% under control they should not be off lead in a public place.

Likewise mine. She’d happily trot off with anyone who stroked her, and if she felt threatened she’d roll over and show them her belly. She could be abducted in seconds.

I thought dogs were supposed to protect their owners! Where is the point of having one that can't even protect itself?

hands up I was a younger dog owner then. I'm now 14 years on with kids of my own which is why I get it now in a way I did not then and am saying I wouldn't take my dog in a loo.
