To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

LittlePearDrop · 13/07/2024 08:28

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

It wasn't a question of "let" we were on the village green and they were happily chasing balls and being great. A family arrived and set up. Picnic blanket on the floor.
They got their sausages out and the
dogs were off. We ran after them shrieking. Of course we apologised profusely. Poor family, though I question their judgement eating on the floor of that particular park.

We are responsible people and there were a lot of repercussions about recall for us but even now 14 years and 5 dogs on..I wouldn't put it past any of them. Most people train their dogs with food. The point being I don't trust them and that's why I would put them safely in my car away from temptation and danger. I don't take them to places that people might not appreciate it for example the school run. They are dogs not people and we have to think of everyone.

I think you need to train your dogs or keep them on a lead.

Werweisswohin · 15/07/2024 08:12

Why question their judgement and not yours? If your dogs aren't 100% under control they should not be off lead in a public place.

Just that the floor was rank. Im
not sure I'd have set food up there. Of course they can eat where they like.

Im not here to take the flack for every dog owner. Already said my point
which is it was inexcusable and one of the reasons I would put my dogs in a cage or car.

Thank you, you'll be pleased to read the following post which explained following the park
incident they were. You'll also be pleased to know my dogs will always be with someone or in a car and not in a toilet with you.

I'm not giving you flack for every dog owner, I'm addressing what you said.

hands up I was a younger dog owner then. I'm now 14 years on with kids of my own which is why I get it now in a way I did not then and am saying I wouldn't take my dog in a loo.

Fair! We’ve all had something. I just can’t stand when people don’t learn and continue to just cause chaos wherever they go. 🌺

Werweisswohin · 15/07/2024 08:27

@sarahd29 at least you're not as bad as the dog walker who let one of the approximate 10 dogs they were walking run up and pee, yes pee, on my bag at the side of our picnic. They didn't even notice or apologise.

Calliopespa · 15/07/2024 09:51

Werweisswohin · 15/07/2024 08:01

I'm not do sure.

You should be. Dogs love the smell of poo.

Now that really is gross.

But we are genetically programmed to care about our own species more than others. Failure to do so is unnatural, and the craze for treating dogs as surrogate humans is an indicator of a society in decline.

But surely it depends. There are certain people who I would definitely care far less about than a dog because they are arseholes. If I had to save my brother in law or a dog it would be the dog every time!

Stop being so forceful.

Indeed. I wonder how many of the owners knew how these dogs were actually being 'walked'.

I feel pretty adamant about the dog- poo smell thing. They always have their nose in any lying about: bird poo, dog poo, deer poo.

Afternoonteavirgin · 15/07/2024 10:31

If you're not permitted to leave them in the tent unattended, and not permitted to take them into the loo, what should you do?

Tying them up outside isn't ideal-theft plus people can approach them and frighten them-some dogs will nip if that happens. Mine is terrified of small children so I'd be very irresponsible to do that.

I've never camped alone thus far but if I did I think I'd have to put her in the car-again, not everyone has a car, and if it was red hot that isn't something I could do either.

I can't see the big deal however. Not ideal to not follow rules but what is the actual issue with there being a dog in the loo/shower block? Assuming nobody with an overpowering dog phobia is going to go to a dog friendly campsite?

These threads always make me chuckle. Dog owners being called entitled by people who don't want their dogs inflected on them in any way. While apparently being totally oblivious to the fact that they share the planet with so many creatures, ways of life, beliefs, people, values they may not like/agree with - surely expecting them all to be kept away from you just because you don't like them is the very definition of intolerance and entitlement?

And on balance I still haven't seen a tangible reason why the op was so upset by the dog in the loo. Other than she didn't like that the owner had ignored the sign. So:

Dog owner doesn't leave dog outside because of risk of theft/escape/distress/injury/people approaching it unsupervised and being liable for anything that happens

Vs

Woman doesn't like the fact that someone has ignored a sign.

Logically I have to agree with the dog owner.

Choosing to roll in poo isn't the same as being forced into a toilet block with a whole host of new smells, none of which they can react naturally to (i.e. roll in).

Lots of other logical comments have been made against this view though. 🫣

Well if you say so. I’m not going to keep investing in an argument about whether or not rolling in poo makes the smell more bearable.

Surely you can see the difference?
It's like eating food versus smelling food or having a drink of water versus looking at a picture of water. You can't really do what you'd naturally want to.

Wouldn't bother me to be honest (i am assuming they are trained and not weeing or pooing)!!

It annoys me more at campsites when little kids keep poking their heads through whilst i am trying to go to the toilet!

Just speak to the owners of the campsite.

I thought dogs were supposed to protect their owners! Where is the point of having one that can't even protect itself?

I didn't get an attack dog duck. Just one we could enjoy

Im not bothered by either drinking water or seeing a picture of it but perhaps I’m missing your point.

I’m afraid that intentionally sniffing or rolling in poo is too far from anything I can relate to to comment usefully. I only know dogs don’t seem to mind sniffing poo.

Maybe some campsites are not really suitable for some dogs.

We are talking about a public loo in a dog friendly campsite.

Which has a sign on the outside saying 'no dogs' ...

I'm not sure why that sign suddenly becomes invisible to,some people with a dog.

Dog friendly doesn't mean that dogs are allowed everywhere and anywhere.
