To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

LittlePearDrop · 13/07/2024 08:28

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

It really wasn't trying to see ya minge....

🤣
That’s what I thought! What’s the big deal?

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 13/07/2024 09:32

If the signs say "no dogs" then you clearly aren't being unreasonable - the dog owners are in the wrong. But what you can actually do about it, I don't know.

I don't think it would bother me that much personally, but that isn't the point.

BlueGrackle · 13/07/2024 09:34

Leave the dog with whoever you are camping with, or in a locked car if you’re bothered about theft. Waiting to hear that everyone at the campsite is s a female solo traveller with no car.
I love dogs, but current trend is of taking dogs everywhere is ridiculous and it’s not particularly good for dogs either. Dogs need to learn how to be alone from time to time, even if you've managed to work you life around your dog never being alone, what happens if you get ill and need to go into hospital, or similar. You are doing a disservice to the dog training it to be so dependent on you.

Hobbesmanc · 13/07/2024 09:35

Just out of interest. If you're solo camping why couldn't you leave your dog zipped in the tent? They must be left alone at home when you go to the loo? It wouldn't bother me them being in the shower block but I'm just curious.

Inadequate people?
you sound delightful

daffodilandtulip · 13/07/2024 09:40

If someone tied their dog to a fence, there would be a post on here saying how their child couldn't use the toilet because of the rows of dogs outside.

LizzieBennett73 · 13/07/2024 09:40

Mine are well trained in the toilets, they flush and wipe the seat if they need to.

Risk of theft? Separation anxiety in a new place leading to barking?

I don’t camp any more but when I did, as a solo female, I’d lock the dog in the car when I had to use the toilets or shower. This wouldn’t be possible in hot weather, but luckily that’s not often a problem with UK camping.

LibertyDuck · 13/07/2024 09:41

Holidaaaaay · 13/07/2024 08:47

I would never tie my dog up unattended. Ever. But that's not to say there isn't surely another option.

Why not? It's a dog, not a child.

And to everyone saying their dog might be stolen, I must have missed the spate of dog thefts from campsites. Hmm

the2andahalfmillion · 13/07/2024 09:44

On these threads it always strikes me that people should probably not go to Italy or some other European countries. Dogs in supermarkets, small shops, all over the place.

it is a real issue for sad solo partnerless inadequate campers like me. My dog would not whine but bark place down if I tied up outside and yes, theft. So, I pick campsites that are deserted and/ or where I can lock my dog in my car when I go to the loo/

fuzzybritches · 13/07/2024 09:47

Not sure what the issue is really. A toilet by default is not a particularly hygienic place. What is a dog going to do? I mean I wouldnt appreciate an XL bully clawing at the door while I'm having a wee but I couldn't get wound up over a small one.

LadyGrinningSoul8517 · 13/07/2024 09:48

Topseyt123 · 13/07/2024 08:50

I was the same when I had dogs. I would take them into public toilets with me.

Believe it or not, dog theft is rife. No way would I ever have left them just tied up outside if I didn't have family or a friend with me to mind them for a few minutes. I can imagine this being a problem on campsites too.

I couldn't give a shit what anyone else thought/thinks of me for that.

An entitled dog owner, who'd have thought it?

Marblessolveeverything · 13/07/2024 09:49

The issue is leaving them unsupervised, which I would argue is less desirable.

Given it's a camp site I assume children are free range so I would see this as a more responsible option.

Ideally no I wouldn't want dogs there but in this particular case I would agree with the owner.

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 13/07/2024 09:51

Surely if you have a dog that can't be left outside/in the tent/in a cage, then you have to go somewhere that doesn't stop you from taking the dog in the toilet. I'm not a camper or a dog owner, but there must be some options that allow the dog to enjoy toilet time with you without the risk of upsetting others.

A little kid sitting on the toilet could be quite shaken by an animal appearing from the neighbouring cubicle. I definitely would've been, I was scared of dogs when I was young.

Beekeepingmum · 13/07/2024 09:52

Yeap this is ridiculous. Your dog is not your child, your dog will be fine with its lead tided up outside, your dog is not special. It is just a pet like any other pet.

CormorantStrikesBack · 13/07/2024 09:53

I go to caravan club sites and no dogs allowed in the shower block. So I started off tying her up outside, then one time she managed to fall off the wheelchair ramp ledge while tied to the railing and would have been strangled if not for a passerby. So I stopped that.

youre not allowed to leave them unattended in the caravan. So now I put her in the car boot (estate) and leave the car doors open. If she barks she barks.

it is a stupid rule but I am a law abiding person so stick to it. I wouldn’t be bothered if I saw someone with a dog in there.

TimetoPour · 13/07/2024 09:53

I wouldn’t want my children having to pass a load of unpredictable, unattended dogs I don’t know that have been chained to a fence.
Taking the dog in seems the less of the two evils.

What the fuck? Inadequate people? My lovely son is ND and has been bullied for years as a result he hugely struggles with trusting people and has few friends. As a young adult his dog is his world and his best friend. Also my good friend who has had two still births and no living children treats her two dogs as her children and why the hell not. People like you make me feel a bit ill.

People steal dogs surely you must've heard about such things?

Again, I would not take my dog to a shop or a cafe but campsite toilets? I don't get the outrage, what is the problem??

Willmafrockfit · 13/07/2024 09:55

my dog comes into to the toilets with me, not the cubicle, but tied up to the handle.
i am only quick

You'll get a lot of hate from the dog obsessives (I guess because the truth hurts?) but I agree totally.

You must have. Dogs get stolen - and usually for quite cruel purposes.

Might feel different if it was a peeper 😂
