To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

'The vast majority of parents wouldn't bring their children somewhere they weren't allowed to be'...

So all the 'I was in the womens changing rooms and there was a 9/10/11 year old boy in there'... 'I was in the ladies toilets and there was a man with his daughter in there'.. are pure invention eh? Parents would NEVER....

No. That's people breaking rules because they feel they have a good reason for doing so.

MadKittenWoman · 14/07/2024 18:15

I don't like dogs. I would never see one harmed, but I don't want to see them in shops and restaurants. They are everywhere now, pissing, shitting, and sniffing and licking. I don't mind so much if the owner is being attentive, but why am I supposed to put up with some random dog running over scaring me or licking my legs in a shop because their owner thinks it's cute?

Serendipity12 · 14/07/2024 18:19

I should imagine the owner was trying to be responsible. After all, there is far more likely to be an issue if dogs are unattended and sometimes as a (responsible) dog owner it feels like you’re damned if you do, damned if you don’t. I frankly don’t see this as a huge deal. If you’re camping in the countryside you might even find there are (gasp) other even larger animals about as well!!! And unattended at that!

I assume you are responding to me.

Children are different from animals. They aren't the same even if you think your dog is your baby. It isn't I'm afraid.

In your examples it would depend on the rules- no children under 12 in the same-sex changing room then yes, a 16 year old going in would be wrong.

A dad taking his daughter into the toilets depends on the circumstances surely? Did he ask? What was the problem with the men's loo? There's nuances to situations where humans are involved.

An entitled dog owner deciding to ignore a "no dogs allowed " sign is the same as an entitled parent bringing their child to a nightclub.

Bloody well said! There are some truly hateful people around.

Not liking dogs doesn't make someone hateful.

Labourdayz · 14/07/2024 18:20

Been in this situation (injured rescue dog, can be reactive and prey driven, ie can easily bolt/escape). I really had no other option.
However I have witnessed kids smashing the mirror in a campsite, because unattended. In comparison, taking a dog in for a few mins (assuming well behaved) is no big deal?
If it’s not hot and you are allowed cars on-site, that would be my initial preference though!

No, but trying to dictate what other business owners allow in their own establishments take the not liking dogs a bit far.

sarahd29 · 14/07/2024 18:22

I have a dog, in fact I've got 4. When we camp we take two. If neither of us could have stayed with them then we'd have popped them in the car we came in and left the window open whilst we used the shower/loo.

No one least of all me wants a dog sniffing round the loo.

Many posters have already explained it’s because the need to keep their dog safe out weighs a sign that doesn’t actually have a logical reason behind it.

If you were on your own and the sign for a public toilet said “no children” would you leave your small child outside alone just to obey the sign?

The sign does have logical reason though. Dogs should not be in public/campsite shared toilet facilities.

LilBowWow · 14/07/2024 18:23

A woman caught on the hop who risked taking her dog with her for a quick wee at an otherwise dog friendly campsite is nothing like taking a toddler to a nightclub 🤣

LilBowWow · 14/07/2024 18:24

Do we know the woman didn’t asked the campsite owners? How come circumstances and nuances only count for humans that don’t have a dog with them.

Cuppapuppa · 14/07/2024 18:25

We camp annually, have done as a dc too. Dogs have come with us and I don’t think I’ve ever been to a campsite that didn’t have a dog somewhere. However I’ve never seen a dog in the toilet!

Nobody is doing that.
We're simply saying 'no dogs' signs must be respected.

The dog isn't allowed in the toilet. The reason is irrelevant.

Why would she feel entitled enough to ask when it clearly states 'no dogs'?

No? There are definitely posters on here saying dogs shouldn't be allowed in cafes and pubs. Have another read through the comments.

Edited

Just to be clear, as humans there are FAR more diseases we can catch from other humans than diseases that we can catch from dogs (zoonoses). Campsite toilets are often a bit grim for reasons that have nothing to do with dogs. 😁 Genuinely wondering what the assumed logical reason is, if the alternative is an unsupervised dog?

Because of this hypothetical situation which apparently is ok.

And because dogs aren't the same as children.

I'd rather they weren't allowed in cafes, partly because of some awful owners, but the main issue on this thread is actually about ignoring 'no dogs' signs.

Dogs don't need to be in toilets.

The woman needed a wee. Not the dog. The woman surely is the same as a child?

No I wouldn't bring my children to a nightclub or somewhere dedicated to over 18s/ if it specifies "no under 3's" like I have responded to you before.

If there is a sign on a toilet that said "no children" I'd bring it up with whoever owns it for discrimination but no, I wouldn't use that toilet either because I don't want to leave my kids unattended.

The same applies to dogs. If it says no dogs then that means no dogs. I have absolutely no idea why you think that doesn't apply to yours.

But we’re not talking about a nightclub. I wouldn’t take my dog to a nightclub and expect to able to come in or use their toilet.

We are talking about a public loo in a dog friendly campsite.

I wouldn't use that toilet either because I don't want to leave my kids unattended.

So what would you do in that situation if you were desperate for the loo and didn’t have time to find the owners to complain/take your child back to the tent? Piss yourself? Or perhaps just nip in the toilet taking your child in the cubicle with you because it’s not the end of the bloody world.

The woman needed to be there.
The dog didn't.
