To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

Presumably piss themselves, its the obvious solution all round.

LilBowWow · 14/07/2024 18:34

The woman needed a wee. Not the dog. The woman surely is the same as a child?

I can't work out if you are on the windup or not so I'm going to take you at face value.

There is a sign that says "no dogs"

That means, no dogs are allowed in the toilets.

The woman can leave the dog with family, put it in the car or any other of the many, many suggestions given in this thread.

If it says no dogs, that means no dogs.

If the sign said "no children"

That means no children are allowed.

If the sign says "no under 3's"

That means children under the age of 3 are not allowed

If the sign says "no smoking"

That means, no smoking is allowed

There are loads of places my toddler isn’t welcome, whether because their licence doesn’t allow it or it’s just not socially acceptable (eg fancy restaurants or the theatre). I pay someone to look after them when that’s the case.

Yeah I don’t take my dog in fancy restaurants they aren’t allowed or the theatre either.

We are talking about a public loo in a dog friendly campsite.

Greenlittecat · 14/07/2024 18:41

PixieLaLar · 14/07/2024 18:38

But we’re not talking about a nightclub. I wouldn’t take my dog to a nightclub and expect to able to come in or use their toilet.

We are talking about a public loo in a dog friendly campsite.

I wouldn't use that toilet either because I don't want to leave my kids unattended.

So what would you do in that situation if you were desperate for the loo and didn’t have time to find the owners to complain/take your child back to the tent? Piss yourself? Or perhaps just nip in the toilet taking your child in the cubicle with you because it’s not the end of the bloody world.

Yes, we've established you think you are above rules because you don't agree with them.

Can you show me an example of no children being allowed in the toilet please? I'm not playing silly "so what if" games with you if they aren't an actual thing

Dogs don't need to be in toilets.

Ah so having it tied up possibly barking at people passing due to anxiety, or running about unsupervised or shut in a car would be preferable? Because I can imagine the kind of posts that we would be seeing about those scenarios! The owner had a need to be responsible and took the dog with her. Dog may have a need through separation anxiety or being a breed likely to be stolen? You don’t get to define need unilaterally.

happyhemsby · 14/07/2024 18:51

I just don't get this level of selfishness from the nutjob dog owners of today. If the toilets say no dogs why do these people think it's ok to go against it. It's a dog ffs people need to differentiate the difference between an animal and a child. Your dog is not a child it is a dog and needs to be either tied up outside or left in a crate while you go do things. Jesus the mind absolutely boggles and this level of humanising a dog!

The thing is a dog should cope perfectly with being tied up for a short while or being left in a vehicle (with open window) or being left with someone else (if travelling with others) - why are so many dogs suddenly getting separation anxiety and barking for no reason? I get that some dogs are reactive for various reasons, but that's more reason not to take them into small spaces with other people.

I'd rather they weren't allowed in cafes, partly because of some awful owners, but the main issue on this thread is actually about ignoring 'no dogs' signs.

I know what the main issue is. And I am fully behind it. But then you get the posters saying dogs shouldn't be allowed here or there or wherever. It's up to the owners of the places. Don't like it, don't go.

It's just the expectation that dogs should be allowed everywhere. It's also concerning that so many dogs apparently have 'separation anxiety' these days - I get that some dogs have issues, often due to past experience, but that doesn't explain it all. Dogs can mostly be trained to spend time alone/at home/in a car etc, as long as they get plenty of exercise etc.

Ukhotelsareshit · 14/07/2024 16:01

@Calliopespa as it happens, dogs are allowed in Claridges. Including in the toilets🥰
Whilst I agree that dog owners should check exactly how “dog friendly” an establishment is before visiting (because in my experience, it’s often not very friendly at all!) if you are massively phobic or allergic you can also book an establishment which is dog free. It works both ways.

Exactly. If you can’t handle dogs why be at a dog friendly campsite with dog unfriendly loos? Unless going to the loo is a big highlight of your holiday.

That’s actually very chilled of Claridges - though I bet the ones that go are predominantly carried. I saw one come into a Michelin Star restaurant in Paris in a Louis Vuitton dog carrier! He behaved immaculately throughout! His head stuck out at one end.

FinalCeleryScheme · 14/07/2024 19:08

TBH I think this calls for the introduction of campsite toilet leopards. They can sit quietly in a cage - sorry ‘crate’ - with a handler nearby, only to be set free if a dog comes in.

The sign outside just needs to have “TOILET LEOPARD AT WORK” added after the existing “NO DOGS”.

I doubt we’d have any dogs willing to enter so no harm would be done. And it’d be very educational for the kiddies.

👍

People have become utterly ridiculous about dogs. Just tie the fucker up outside and let it whine for a few minutes.

This

Hahahaha fabulous idea!

Does the toilet leopard accept excuses?

There is no expectation here. We always check if we have the dog with us if places are dog friendly. My dog can stop alone. We had a van rather than a tent, but he happily stopped in there on hot days or when we were going out somewhere that wasn't dog friendly.

Maybe folk are perfectly happy for dogs to be around but just feel they don't need to be in the toilet block?
Maybe the owners prefer to keep it dog free in case too many dogs end up in there and don't get on/become annoying/scare folk. Maybe they don't want folk washing dogs in there (if it's a shower block too).

There is an expectation from some though - many posts illustrate that.
A new clothing store opened recently in our town, within a short time of it being announced on social media we were getting 'is it dog friendly?'. I don't think any dog store is a good place for dogs tbh.

Why on earth would you expect a dog friendly campsite to mean it’s normal to have dogs in the bathrooms?

Unless going to the loo is a big highlight of your holiday.

Whats that got to do with anything?

Justforthisthread24 · 14/07/2024 19:15

@sarahd29 I “popped my dog” into the car for 10 minutes and she was stolen (they cloned my key) It was, no exaggeration, utterly horrific. Please, do not risk it. I never thought I would happen either. But it did.

I agree! I think the majority of dog owners are like you too tbf.

Dogs are fine if they are allowed in the place. I like dogs in pubs, I don't see many in coffee shops but it wouldn't bother me if it was a dog friendly coffee shop and I chose to go in there.

If there is a sign that says "no dogs allowed" I don't want a dog there.

I'm really sorry that happened.
It still doesn't justify ignoring no dogs signs.

What do you do when you go to sleep in your tent, is someone standing guard over the dog ?

Ukhotelsareshit · 14/07/2024 19:19

@Calliopespa you would think so but the last dog I met there was a massive golden doodle, with his friend the Giant Schnauzer 🥰 Very well behaved and bothered no one, even in the loo 🤣🤣🤣🤣
