To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

LittlePearDrop · 13/07/2024 08:28

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

I’m not talking about following the rules as you well know. I’m talking about the dog haters who don’t care if something happens to them, the idiots who think dog owners are ‘inadequate’ (hello pot, meet kettle) and the general haters who converge on a thread whenever they hear the dog klaxon.

Bloody well said! There are some truly hateful people around.

Tricho · 14/07/2024 16:25

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/07/2024 15:46

Of course.

In the same way that a life insurance policy pay out is a perfectly acceptable replacement for a loved one who has died.

Took the words out of my mouth

But the "dog klaxon" is about dog owners not following the "no dogs allowed sign", and there are many, many posters who are attempting to justify ignoring the "no dog rule".

I'm genuinely asking, why do you (or dog owners) think it'd ok to ignore it?

I’m not saying it’s ok to ignore it but I can see why people would when there’s so much hatred towards dogs, even the well behaved one. I’m saying the amount of hate from the dog haters is ridiculous. Someone even suggested it doesn’t matter if a dog is stolen as that’s what insurance is for. I’m not sure whether they are goady or just thick!

Maybe part of the fault lies with the campsites, they should make it clear that even though the site is dog friendly, dogs can’t go everywhere.

BTW I don’t have a dog and I would rather stick pins in my eyes than go camping so am not guilty of taking a dog where I shouldn’t!

BlueGrackle · 14/07/2024 16:41

Why do a lot of posters on here seem to think that a ‘no dogs sign’ is an instruction to leave their dog tied to a fence ?
It’s a worry what they do when faced with a sign saying no children.

Valeriesimpleton · 14/07/2024 16:45

I don't live in the UK and to be honest I find the endless designer breeds being touted around in public places irritating.when I visit. Get a dog, take it out for walks and let it get muddy and piss in the forest, play with other dogs etc. Also teach it to be alone or have two. But if someone needs to have their dog I don't mind and I find the endless spite and hatred for dog lovers on MN distasteful. I think it makes people who live depressing humdrum lives running round after their children feel better about their sad lives by playing the Trump card, dog owners act like they have a baby but it's not. Well thank god for that, kids are tediously boring 99% of the time. Dogs are much better. The spite on here makes me want to move back to the UK and get a big slobbery dog who is dressed in a baby gro and accompanies me to any middle class venue where these horrid harridans hang out and I will sit him in a high chair and let him have unlimited screen time while eating more than a lettuce leaf and knocking back a fruitshoot. He will also have his ears pierced at Claires. Pah.

Cuppapuppa · 14/07/2024 16:53

These dog threads are really not a good PR move for MNs! Brings out the crazies 😆😆😆

Iheartmysmart · 14/07/2024 16:59

Im away camping now for the first time this year. Just gone for a wee and there’s a chicken mooching around the shower block and birds flying in and out through a gap in the corner of the roof. But sadly no dogs.

Many posters have already explained it’s because the need to keep their dog safe out weighs a sign that doesn’t actually have a logical reason behind it.

If you were on your own and the sign for a public toilet said “no children” would you leave your small child outside alone just to obey the sign?

There's loads of places you can't take children... so parents either don't go or get babysitters.

The harpies on here reduce me to behaving like a 5 year old. Such uptightness makes me want to shout but at the top of my voice

I haven't experienced any hatred of dogs in real life, have you? Most people just smile and/pet them I thought but I agree with you, some of the responses have been a bit 😵‍💫

I would imagine most people (me included) don't like dog owners who think their dog can go anywhere regardless of whether dogs are actually welcome.

It doesn't matter if there is a million reasons why you should be able to bring the dog, if there is something in place to say "no dogs" then there is no justification to bring it.

No I wouldn't bring my children to a nightclub or somewhere dedicated to over 18s/ if it specifies "no under 3's" like I have responded to you before.

If there is a sign on a toilet that said "no children" I'd bring it up with whoever owns it for discrimination but no, I wouldn't use that toilet either because I don't want to leave my kids unattended.

The same applies to dogs. If it says no dogs then that means no dogs. I have absolutely no idea why you think that doesn't apply to yours.

Camping has always been a family holiday, what are you on about.

It’s only recently that dogs need to be in every public space, preferably off lead according to their owners.

Dogs used to roam our streets when I was a child in the 70's. But camping was a family holiday, but that included the dog, because practically everyone had one. All if the rural pubs and places that have camp sites have always allowed dogs in pubs.

FinalCeleryScheme · 14/07/2024 17:53

Depends. Where I grew up in the ‘70s very few people had a dog. And dogs weren’t treated like toddlers.

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/07/2024 17:56

FinalCeleryScheme · 14/07/2024 16:22

Just gonna leave this here…

You cannot insist on proof that an assistance dog is an assistance dog. Thats illegal. If the dog does tasks that assist someone with aspects of their disability, then it is an assistance dog.

If the dog is not under control however, the dog and handler can be asked to leave regardless of it being an assistance dog.

LilBowWow · 14/07/2024 17:57

I’d rather people treat a dog like a toddler than a suitcase.

Anon39 · 14/07/2024 17:59

My son is highly allergic to fur animals and the amount of time people take it personally when I say don’t bring your dog by my child is ridiculous. Everywhere is dog friendly now even trying to book a holiday where they haven’t allowed animals to stay is so difficult.

At our last camp (and never went camping again) my son was hospitalised with an allergic reaction SATS at 93% it was terrifying I’m really over this treating dogs like humans and allowing them everywhere.

spottedinthewild · 14/07/2024 18:00

"Just tie it up outside" said no dog owner ever. How about tying your child up outside? The point is it's not safe to do this, for a dog or a child, in our society anymore.

YABU OP, if I was camping I'd fully expect to see dogs about, even in the toilets. If it was a 5 star hotel or resturant I might be on your side.

AbraAbraCadabra · 14/07/2024 18:02

PuttingDownRoots · 13/07/2024 08:53

If you can't leave the dog unattended, you need to find somewhere hour dog is allowed to be.

This. You don’t just take your dog in regardless.

The vast majority of parents wouldn't bring their children somewhere they weren't allowed to be. You would get a babysitter etc.

The sign on the campsite loo said "no dogs". To ignore it makes you entitled even if you "expect to see them"

There are loads of places my toddler isn’t welcome, whether because their licence doesn’t allow it or it’s just not socially acceptable (eg fancy restaurants or the theatre). I pay someone to look after them when that’s the case.

Seriously? You think they just put up the sign for fun?
Even if you do not agree with the reasons behind it, you are not entitled to ignore it.
