To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

You know, I successfully manage to scroll past thousands of MN's post without demanding a meaning/ point. I've posted what I wanted to, and I owe you no more.

But it's meaningless.
Jesus wept at what?

Camping has always appealed to dog owners, it's a shame it caught on for those with young children. The issue is that you haven't got them under control if left tied up. The farmer can shoot them. As said there's nasty bastards about and if they spot a rabbit, rat etc they are going to possibly get free. You'll probably get dogs sniffing under your door less times than being made to feel inappropriate by children looking under etc.

Camping has always been a family holiday, what are you on about.

It’s only recently that dogs need to be in every public space, preferably off lead according to their owners.

Why post a comment if the meaning is ambiguous?

i think she means it’s rather a fuss over something quite trivial.

And that’s fine - some of the best threads are trivial - but not so much when it beconaes a case of calling people “ inadequate” because they are attached to their dogs and other callous things.

It's not 'quite trivial' though.

I have nothing against dogs or their owners in general, but some places should definitely be dog free.

So now the lady is entitled, selfish, mentally unwell and a stalker according to OP all for bringing her dog into a toilet block with her whilst at a dog friendly camp site….

A dog friendly location doesn't mean dogs are allowed everywhere in that location. 🫣

Selfish and entitled yes.

The stalker comment was a response to another poster who claimed she was stalking the entitled dog owner.

You need to read the thread before attempting to summarise, otherwise it makes you look a bit silly.

There were signs up saying not to take dogs into the toilet, did you miss that? Of course she shouldn't have taken her dog in there, and she knew full well that it wasn't allowed.

henlake7 · 14/07/2024 13:42

Allowed or not if I didnt have anywhere safe to leave my dog Id take it into the toilet with me. Thing is I actually care about my dog....I dont care about some random stranger I will never see again, so dog wins every time.

I mean if a dog in the stall next to you is so offensive I can always just pee al fresco with him.....maybe behind your tent!?😆

This sums up exactly the problem with entitled dog owners. Your dog does not trump a human, even if you will never see that human ever again.
Imagine if cat owners acted like dog owners.

Ah, and you wonder why people don't like dog owners.

Threatening to pee outside of someone's tent because your dog isnt allowed in the toilet is disgusting.

If the sign says no dogs, it means no dogs.

It's also quite hypocritical (and emblematic of the selfish attitude of this type of dog owner) that posters are leaning heavily on the fact that it's a dog-friendly site while blithely proclaiming that they would disregard the toilets' no dog signs. You can't have it both ways. You either respect the rules of the site or you don't.

I notice you conveniently ignored the mentally unwell comment from the list. Perhaps because it was completely uncalled for and unpleasant.

No, I just couldnt remember off the top of my head and cba to scroll through.

If you'd like to quote the post and add the context that would be great!

lemonmeringueno3 · 14/07/2024 14:09

I think the 'no dogs' signs are put up for a good reason and dog-owners should comply even if they don't know what the reason is or don't agree with it.

If you don't have anyone to look after your dog, and you know it can't be left alone, then choose a campsite that allows dogs into every space even toilets. Ring ahead to check.

I have two dogs and love them but don't expect everyone else to feel the same.

What next, six people in the toilet and each one has a couple of dogs with them?

Werweisswohin · 14/07/2024 14:15

@lemonmeringueno3 those of us without dogs/wary of dogs/allergic to dogs absolutely appreciate considerate dog owners like you, we support dog friendly places for you and appreciate you respecting boundaries.

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/07/2024 14:18

You know, you could, if you come across a dog in the toilet and you are unhappy about this for any reason, just say something?

'Hi, I have a bit of a dog phobia/allergy/deep seated hatred of canines, could you remove your dog/stop him sticking his nose under the partition...'

And there is a chance this could resolve the situation and it's much more likely to do so than coming to Mumsnet to froth about how campsite toilets are now over-run by out of control dogs.

You know, people could, if they see a 'no dogs' sign, just not take a dog into the toilet to start with?

That's a nice idea in theory but given some of the responses to this thread I'm sure you would get a rather long lecture about why it's ok for their dog to be in there.

If the sign says no dogs, it means no dogs.

Just like if it says no children, no smoking, no whatever.
