To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

If you can't leave the dog unattended, you need to find somewhere hour dog is allowed to be.

This.

If somewhere says 'no dogs' then it should be assumed they can't go in, regardless of your personal predicament and unwillingness to leave your dog unattended fastened up.

You need to find somewhere else to go that does allow them.

We've gotten to a ridiculous situation over recent years where some dog owners believe their pet should be allowed everywhere they go and other people should just put up with it.

What I don't understand is why very reasonable and absolutely not unhinged dog owners think it's ok to totally disregard a "no dogs" sign because they didn't realise their dog wasn't welcome

Or to assume dogs are welcome just because there's no sign saying 'no dogs'. Surely it's obvious dogs aren't welcome in some places without even needing a sign?

If anything she is stalking me! I've been in the toilet block first each time.

Maybe she's one of the batshit owners on here trying to prove a point. The point being that she's an entitled chump 🤣🤣🤣

I love how so many dog owners on here and falling over backwards trying to justify why the rules shouldn't apply to them. Kind of proving the point of everyone else on here who thinks it demonstrates a selfish attitude.

One of the many reasons I hate camping. LoL

Flossflower · 14/07/2024 10:00

OP, if you have seen this twice why haven’t you called the person out on their behaviour or reported it to the site managers?

Valeriesimpleton · 14/07/2024 10:30

Camping and campers are joyless. This proves it. I hope she reads this, it would possibly be the only way of anyone laughing while sleeping in a tent sharing a toilet with a load of other joyless tightwads.

Tutorpuzzle · 14/07/2024 10:44

What a joyless holiday you’re having OP.

Give yourself half an hour off, have a coffee and take a breather.

And are you absolutely sure the woman you’re stalking doesn’t have a disability that requires her to have her dog with her?

What's joyless about questioning why a dog is in a toilet block?

You’re quite right. But to be reporting on a stranger’s bathroom activities over two days when you’re supposed to be on holiday is a little sad.

I hope your holiday gets better, OP.

Have to admit I was perplexed she was resorting to that stuck-in-bed-ill or avoiding-the-washing-up activity of posting on MN while on her holiday.

Then I remembered she is camping.

You actually have to ask?

Do you have an answer?
I have lots of joy in my life but I also question odd things.

Well my answer would be this.

After many years of enjoyable holidays, I have never resorted to studying the goings-on in the shared toilets of the place where I was staying.

The other thing I am perplexed by, (and I say this as someone who would never voluntarily camp so perhaps I am missing something), I thought the whole “ambience” of a camping trip was that of being back-to-nature, down with the frogs, chilled about midges, nonchalant about ticks in your knickers, being freshly inspired by the usefulness of sticks, eschewing upscale bathrooms and cooking facilities, and positively embracing of rain, mud and rock hard ground. I just don’t really see how a dog’s nose under a cubicle door doesn’t fit that vibe admirably? 🤷🏻‍♀️It seems so odd to suddenly go OCD about amenities in the context of a camping trip.

A dog in a toilet block isn't 'getting back to nature' though. Also please don't misuse the term OCD, which is an actual serious condition.

Yes but it’s the toilet block that’s out of place more than the dog surely ?

Nope, it's the dog.
Toilet blocks are needed because 'nature' cannot cope with all the mess humans generate.
