To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

LittlePearDrop · 13/07/2024 08:28

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

Girl dogs in female loos are ok!

Yes, on threads about dogs in public indoor places. Have a good hard think why that might be. Go on 😏

Cos the sort of people who bother to post about how much they hate people’s dogs and how they needn’t think the dog is special and how entitled and inadequate their owners are for caring about their dog tend not to be calm or rational people? 🤷🏻‍♀️

K0OLA1D · 13/07/2024 15:48

I would rather be friends with them than someone who can’t leave their home without their dog and who inflicts their pet onto everyone in cafes, shops and toilets!

God forbid someone takes their dog to a dog friendly place. Shock bloody horror

Greenlittecat · 13/07/2024 15:53

Calliopespa · 13/07/2024 15:40

I probably would. But I certainly wouldn’t tell anyone their dog wasn’t special.

"Probably"

Your dog isn't special to anyone but you. It needs to follow the rules just like every other dog.

Nope. It is because they are considerate people in their real lives and struggle with understanding selfish owners who allow their dirty dogs to go up to strangers in cafes, toilets etc with the tedious refrain of, ‘oh he’s just being friendly’. It’s not irrational to challenge people for being selfish and inconsiderate.

It is the dog-obsessives who lose the ability to think rationally about polite human behaviour.

Do you struggle with social skills? Eg being polite, considerate, sensitive to others’ needs? Is being around dogs thus easier for you maybe?

That poster did obviously mean they’re not special in the sense of breaking the rules. In the same way you might say (or think!) to someone blatantly disregarding the rules “what makes you so special?”.

My dog is very special to me, but I still wouldn’t take him in somewhere that said ‘no dogs’ in the same way that I wouldn’t decide to waltz into an adults only restaurant with toddler DD in tow.

FoxRedPuppy · 13/07/2024 16:01

I’ve done it, when there aren’t specific signs. Not for a shower, just a wee. I also do it regularly at a local park as there are dog thefts there, and there aren’t signs saying I can’t.

I genuinely can’t see what the e issue is apart from it being “against the rules”

I didn’t especially love dogs at the beginning of the thread ( have always liked them perfectly well) but I now want to identify as an ardent dog lover for fear of being grouped with the haters and their ilk!

I think that's fairly obvious given your responses.

MarpleCake · 13/07/2024 16:05

I suppose people will ignore the sign as bringing a dog into the toilets isn’t actually causing any harm. Leaving them unattended may cause some problems.

😳How ironic that this is a post questioning politeness and sensitivity…

I really don't think most people taking a dog into the loo with them on a campsite or at a services etc are doing so because they think they're 'entitled' to do as they please.

They're doing it because there is no other safe option - safe for their dogs (who they do have a legal and moral responsibility to) and safe for everyone else.

Several other safe options have been suggested, to be met with bizarre responses involving freak car accidents, soaring temperatures which surely isn’t a problem at present and the campsite owner has obviously just put the sign up to save on cleaning ?
It basically boils down to the fact that a certain element of dog owners think the rules don’t apply to them and their little precious, so fuck everyone else I’ll do what’s convenient to me. The very embodiment of ‘entitlement’.

Exactly, dog owners can't face the fact that some of their cohort are ridiculously entitled and don't give a shit about people who don't want their animals absolutely everywhere. So they come up with weird and wonderful fantasy scenarios where the dog owner absolutely did plan to keep their fur baby away from everyone else, but then the aliens came and abducted the lead, and the kennels spontaneously combusted, and the person who was supposed to look after the dog fell into a disused well, so they literally had no option but to bring their fur baby to the loo/theatre/children's play area.

It always amazes me on mumsnet that users cannot see outside their own experiences. Not everyone has a partner, family or friends to support them. I have been a single mum since my daughter was 2.

On the occasion I used service station loos in the middle of a 360mile journey to see my mum she was about 4, not old enough to be left alone herself, certainly not in charge of a dog. Locking a dog in a car when the temperature outside is over 30c is a death sentence. And I had chosen to travel in the evening when it should have been cooler. I had to take the dog because my ex let me down about looking after him last minute.

When I camp it is me and my daughter which is why I don’t take the dog. Yesterday I took him into an otherwise empty public toilet because I wanted to go for a long walk with my daughter and dog and all the places I could perhaps have gone for a wild wee were chest high in nettles. I probably shouldn’t have taken the dog at all as, shock horror, dog free people had to pass us on the narrow path! Obviously I am a terrible human being to have just brought dog, and daughter, to heel and waited by the edge of the path.

None of which is relevant to the ops post.
I’m perfectly capable of understanding that peoples situations are different, in the same way that as a dog owner I understand that not everyone wants my dog in their personal space.
If you have extenuating circumstances that mean you can’t follow an instruction laid out by the camp owner, then you go and speak to them and let them offer you a solution, you don’t just continuously ignore it.

I am not scared of dogs or remotely bothered by barking. Bark away, I don’t care. I don’t find dogs clean and I think they have no place in restaurants or shops. And they should certainly not nuzzle or paw or jump up at strangers. This is apparently incomprehensible to many dog-lovers.

I never let my young kids approach others or disturb them. Or thought they should be allowed in adult areas. Consideration, see?

Lampshadeblue · 13/07/2024 16:18

I’d much rather people take the dogs in on a lead under control than left tied up. As others have said, leaving a dog unattended would be very irresponsible. So many things to go wrong with that, very few things to go wrong with taking a dog on a lead into a cubicle! Whenever I’ve been camping it’s young children responsible for making most mess.

I don’t hate dogs. If you’re dogs is barking at everyone and anything then perhaps you should consider training it.

MixedCouple2 · 13/07/2024 16:22

This is why I hate going anywhere nice these days! Dogs are replacing humans!

YANBU - tie to the fence or leave it home or don't own a dog if you cant follow simple rules.
Can you imagine a single parent taking their child to a night club because they can't find childcare. What do parents do? They stay home or find childcare.

I dont hate dogs. My parents had working dogs. Kept on the farm on private land. I hate the incessant need to take dogs everywhere!! Trains, cafes, restaurants, hotels!!! It has put me off holidaying in the UK as our last couple holidays have been awful and completely ruined due to dog owners and their pets.

Yeah they aren't your kids. They're animals.

Good try though!

I actually like dogs. I think they're cute and a pub is made better by having one. I just don't like owners who think they don't need to obey "no dogs" for a variety of silly reasons.
