To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

LittlePearDrop · 13/07/2024 08:28

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

Not in the spaces that dog owners have been instructed to keep dogs out of.

Absolutely - the entitlement is astounding to me.

I don't know why there's such a sizeable minority of dog owners who think the rules don't apply to them.

If you can't leave your dog alone then plan your holiday accordingly. We're not talking about emergencies here!

They could be pitched 6ft away from them

Well everyone’s got such well behaved dogs on here, it should be any trouble managing their behaviour and keeping them contained within their pitch should it ?

It’s shocking the lack of empathy for anyone that might not want a dog around them for whatever reason. Arseholery at its finest.

But the fact remains. If they're that scared or allergic is 6ft away far enough?

I just don't think if my dc was allergic or so scared of a dog they couldn't be near one, I'd book a dog friendly anywhere.

I imagine they could ask to be moved to a different pitch in that eventuality.

Someone doesn't have to be scared or allergic not to want dogs sniffing around them while they pee or have a shower, though.

Where have I said anyone should accept that? If it says no dogs, it means, no dogs.

You'd have found it hard to find a dog free area on some of the campsites I stay on. And then you get the dicks with the out of control dogs. In the summer some places are fully booked too. I just don't think I'd risk it

sleepercellspy · 13/07/2024 14:48

I don't make a habit of it but I've had to take my dog in toilets a couple of times when I've been out on my own. Usually I'd leave them in the car but not on a hot day.

Once I was desperate for a poo and was not willing to leave my dog tied up in a busy shopping area so took her in with me. She's a distinctive breed and I've never left any of my dogs outside shops etc

Weird. Are you lacking in reading comprehension or something?

Where did I say I was traumatized? Genuinely, please quote back my own words and point out the trauma. I'll wait.

My original post described what happened with the first dog. That was all. Lots of you seem hellbent on making up my reaction to it.

I just think if the campsite owners have a sign up that says "no dogs" then you don't take your dog in. It's that simple. If they whine outside, tough. If you're genuinely terrified a dog napper might turn up at the exact moment you're in the loo on a remote campsite, tough. If you have no one else to look after them, tough. Your dog is not special. You're not special.

The owners clearly don't want the dogs in there. Maybe their cleaner is allergic. Maybe they just think it's common decency. Whatever. People need to have a little respect and not act so entitled just because they think they are exempt from the rules.

Your dog is not special is an awful thing to say.
You might not be sentimental about them but dogs can be an enormously loved member of the family.

Horrible 👎🏾

Crinklycrisp · 13/07/2024 14:55

If the sign says No dogs, then don't take your dog in the bog.

qwertyasdfgzxcv · 13/07/2024 14:57

All this defence of dogs is annoying. This campsite specifies no dogs so that's what is allowed and what dog free campers are expecting.

marmiteoneverything · 13/07/2024 15:04

Is this particular instance you are obviously not being unreasonable. If the toilet block has signs up saying ‘no dogs’ then you don’t take dogs in there. You leave them with someone else, tie them up outside or leave them in your tent or car, and if you can’t do any of those things then you probably shouldn’t have brought your dog on holiday.

I wouldn’t have any issue with dogs being in toilets generally though, so long as they’re well behaved. There are always dogs in the toilets of our closest NT property!

Do you not understand sarcasm?
That was the point it’s a total non event.

How does someone bringing their dog into a toilet cubicle with them actually affect you?

The only person who sounds rude and entitled here is you.

InTheWindow · 13/07/2024 15:21

BlueGrackle · 13/07/2024 12:07

Lock them in car, or leave them with whoever you are camping with. It’s not fair to inflict a dog on other people who maybe frightened, or have allergies.
I have dogs, why can other dog owners not grasp this ?

It always amazes me on mumsnet that users cannot see outside their own experiences. Not everyone has a partner, family or friends to support them. I have been a single mum since my daughter was 2.

On the occasion I used service station loos in the middle of a 360mile journey to see my mum she was about 4, not old enough to be left alone herself, certainly not in charge of a dog. Locking a dog in a car when the temperature outside is over 30c is a death sentence. And I had chosen to travel in the evening when it should have been cooler. I had to take the dog because my ex let me down about looking after him last minute.

When I camp it is me and my daughter which is why I don’t take the dog. Yesterday I took him into an otherwise empty public toilet because I wanted to go for a long walk with my daughter and dog and all the places I could perhaps have gone for a wild wee were chest high in nettles. I probably shouldn’t have taken the dog at all as, shock horror, dog free people had to pass us on the narrow path! Obviously I am a terrible human being to have just brought dog, and daughter, to heel and waited by the edge of the path.

Hard to imagine what a truly dog phobic person would be doing in a dog unfriendly toilet within a dog friendly campsite …

Maddy70 · 13/07/2024 15:33

Dogs will get out of a tent. Its the only way they can be controlled when the owner leaves the tent

Greenlittecat · 13/07/2024 15:34

PixieLaLar · 13/07/2024 14:12

If I was in the situation where I was on a dog friendly camp site alone with my dog and needed to use the toilet then yes I would ignore the sign and take them in with me because it’s not safe to tie them up outside where you can’t even see them.

That doesn’t make me an entitled dog owner who likes to break rules…it’s keeping your dog safe.

Do you just blindly follow rules because a sign says so even when it doesn’t make logical or practical sense?

Actually, that does make you an entitled dog owner. If you ignore a sign that says "no dogs" then believing you don't need to follow it is incredibly entitled.

Dog owners like you are the reason signs need to be up in the first place. Although I'm not suprised you wouldn't follow the rule.

If there was a rule that said "no under 3s" I wouldn't bring my 2 year old, even if it wasn't obvious why I couldn't.

Well aren’t you a delight! This just shows what an unpleasant person you are, pity the people with whom you have relationships if this is the way you think 🙄

I would rather be friends with them than someone who can’t leave their home without their dog and who inflicts their pet onto everyone in cafes, shops and toilets!

Just because your dog is special to you, it doesn't mean it's special to anyone else.

If the sign says "no dogs " hopefully you would respect that.

Non dog owners always go so ott with their responses. Inadequate, selfish, entitled and so on. Dog owners seem so much calmer and more rational. Coincidence?

Yes, on threads about dogs in public indoor places. Have a good hard think why that might be. Go on 😏

CyprusCypress · 13/07/2024 15:44

ricecrispiecakes · 13/07/2024 11:29

Would you feel the same if you were terrified of dogs, or had a child who was terrified of dogs who you were trying to calm down while they were showering or using the toilet?

I love dogs and own a dog, but that doesn't give me the right to take him anywhere I want regardless of any rules or other people. Threads like this make me realise why dog owners have such a bad name.

It’s such a shame for decent owners like you. Your reasonable and considerate voices get drowned out by the selfish minority/majority.
