To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

On balance I think I’d rather the dog be in the toilets in the control of the owner than have to pass a bunch of unaccompanied dogs outside to get in. Neither are ideal but it seems that everybody has a dog these days, especially families who camp.

Tophelleborine · 13/07/2024 08:37

People have become utterly ridiculous about dogs. Just tie the fucker up outside and let it whine for a few minutes.

2dogsandabudgie · 13/07/2024 08:41

I would rather this than dogs being allowed in cafes.

Iheartmysmart · 13/07/2024 08:43

I used to go solo camping with my dog and if we were out walking I’d always take him into the toilets with me. There are some nasty bastards around and I’d never leave him tied up and unattended.

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 13/07/2024 08:44

There's always options. If you are camping on your own take a crate for your dog. I have never needed to take the dog into toilets/showers with me

HiCandles · 13/07/2024 08:45

Agree. Just tie it up outside. Campsite toilets have enough grass and mud being walked in without dogs adding to the dirt. It's also pretty unusual to camp alone so people could leave dogs back with their companions.
The dog craze has got out of hand. I actively avoid known dog friendly cafes in my town now.

K0OLA1D · 13/07/2024 08:45

We camp with our dog and he's never been in to the loo with us.

We tend to use campsites which are really dog friendly as well where they are allowed off lead with the campsite dogs wandering.

Holidaaaaay · 13/07/2024 08:47

I would never tie my dog up unattended. Ever. But that's not to say there isn't surely another option.

My mother in law goes alone and just can't leave the dog in the tent. She has to take him to the loo.

I was the same when I had dogs. I would take them into public toilets with me.

Believe it or not, dog theft is rife. No way would I ever have left them just tied up outside if I didn't have family or a friend with me to mind them for a few minutes. I can imagine this being a problem on campsites too.

I couldn't give a shit what anyone else thought/thinks of me for that.

PuttingDownRoots · 13/07/2024 08:53

If you can't leave the dog unattended, you need to find somewhere hour dog is allowed to be.

Iheartmysmart · 13/07/2024 08:55

@Topseyt123 It did make solo camping slightly challenging but there is no way I’d leave my dog unattended, not even for a minute. Especially as he got older and his sight and hearing deteriorated. How terrifying for him. I used the showers very late in the evening so nobody else was inconvenienced but when you need the loo there’s not much you can do!

Fine in unisex toilets, but a male dog in a female toilet? 😱

Camping has always appealed to dog owners, it's a shame it caught on for those with young children. The issue is that you haven't got them under control if left tied up. The farmer can shoot them. As said there's nasty bastards about and if they spot a rabbit, rat etc they are going to possibly get free. You'll probably get dogs sniffing under your door less times than being made to feel inappropriate by children looking under etc.

Sethera · 13/07/2024 09:07

When we used to camp in a tent, we took our dog's crate with us (we'd crate trained him as a pup, and as an adult he still liked to sleep in the crate so we just left it there with the door permanently open). We closed the crate door at night so he wouldn't get out for a wander while we were sleeping, and put him in there for a short period if we needed to leave him alone for any other reason. He was fine with it. I wouldn't take a dog into public showers at a campsite because dogs are too messy.

Oh dear are you one of those people who can't travel solo? Camping locations are excellent for walking. I don't have a dog now, but I lend other people's. Do you view solo horse riders as inadequate? I'm wondering if the new air tents make it even less likely to leave a dog in one?

Well aren’t you a delight! This just shows what an unpleasant person you are, pity the people with whom you have relationships if this is the way you think 🙄

Yeah I agree. I would never tie mine up outside. He would hate it, try to get away and then be on the loose. I’d also be afraid someone would steal him. But I wouldn’t just disobey the sign. Presumably these women had literally no other option. And it really wouldn’t bother me.

Janiie · 13/07/2024 09:10

I loathe dogs in cafes, restaurants and shops. I definitely don't want visitors bringing their dogs to visit but dogs in toilet blocks on a campsite? What is the problem?

LilBowWow · 13/07/2024 09:24

I’d imagine there’d be whinging if the dog was tied up outside and making a noise or (heaven forbid) a kid needed to walk past it.

Screamingabdabz · 13/07/2024 09:25

There is nowhere that you can go now without some dipstick needing to take their animal with them. It’s infuriating but with peak dog ownership many dog owners are just utterly selfish and inconsiderate, you just have to be alert to it as a way of life sadly.
