To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

I agree OP, and screw anyone with allergies- who cares about other people as long as they do the right thing by themselves. Not to mention people who are genuinely terrified of dogs - no sympathy most of the time because “oh MY dog isn’t a problem, MY dog is so lovely”. It’s beyond irritating. No issue whatsoever with dogs on lead outside who mind their own business with owners in control. But the rest, and there’s A LOT of inconsiderate people about. No dogs except guiding dogs inside. Full stop.

So people who own businesses who benefit from having dog owners in should have no choice?

My dog can't be on a lead for every walk either. We put so much effort in him when he was a pup. I'm not leashing him because others can't control their dogs.

@Topseyt123 It did make solo camping slightly challenging but there is no way I’d leave my dog unattended, not even for a minute. Especially as he got older and his sight and hearing deteriorated. How terrifying for him. I used the showers very late in the evening so nobody else was inconvenienced but when you need the loo there’s not much you can do!

You just don't go to a campsite where dogs aren't allowed in toilets. It's a very simple solution.

ricecrispiecakes · 13/07/2024 11:09

Not really about being entitled, more about lack of options.

If none of the available options work for you and your situation, then you just don't go, surely? I wouldn't be able to camp solo with my dog so I just...wouldn't book it to begin with Confused

Binglebong · 13/07/2024 11:14

It's all very well saying only go to a site that allows dogs in but how are you meant to tell in advance? If you go to somewhere that advertises itself as dog friendly it's hardly going to put "apart from the toilet block" on the advert.

TheBizzies · 13/07/2024 11:14

I'd be delighted to see a snout under my cubicle! I'd give it a boop

I think that’s what it comes down to. The sign was not thought through from a 360 degree practical view.

I suspect it was to save cleaning staff needing to mop up muddy paw prints.

Edited

Maybe you should clean up after your dogs mess?

Tutorpuzzle · 13/07/2024 11:17

@helpfulperson Dog owners aren’t more important than anyone else, but their dogs are!

Oh, I do love these pearl clutching threads…but a peeping tom dog, for crying out loud, how do you all get through the day??!!🤣

Very easily - you ring them or send them an e-mail before booking and make sure they can accommodate you.

LilBowWow · 13/07/2024 11:24

Remember all this wise advice the next time you want to whinge about the time to went to a dog friendly cafe and a dog was there.

Branleuse · 13/07/2024 11:25

Ffs. A snoot underneath toilet cubicle is hardly a big deal. Even if there is a sign. I really think people have forgotten the fine art of live and let live.

Valeriesimpleton · 13/07/2024 11:25

This is like complaining about drunk people on an Easyjet flight. Sharing a toilet and shower with a load of other people is far worse than a quiet dog minding it's own business.

I used to go solo camping with my dog and if we were out walking I’d always take him into the toilets with me. There are some nasty bastards around and I’d never leave him tied up and unattended.

Absolutely this. Someone, in a matter of seconds, could abduct the dog. Animal cruelty and abduction is on the rise and I won't go into the awful details of the things these people do. I don't understand people who leave their dogs tied up outside of shops or whatever. It makes me angry.

I would rather this than dogs being allowed in cafes.

It's sad that we seem to have forgotten a world where neither would be considered normal.

When was this? There is a picture of my nan as a little girl in a cafe in Wales on holiday on her mantle. She's nearly 90

Would you feel the same if you were terrified of dogs, or had a child who was terrified of dogs who you were trying to calm down while they were showering or using the toilet?

I love dogs and own a dog, but that doesn't give me the right to take him anywhere I want regardless of any rules or other people. Threads like this make me realise why dog owners have such a bad name.

Yeah, but they're humans. Don't you know that human beings have a god given right to do whatever they like? We're the only species capable of destroying the planet, which makes us superior apparently.

Are you really saying dogs are more important than anyone else? Wow!

Every time I see another report of a dog attack or read a post like that I'm coming round to the belief all dogs should just be banned.

Beware of dog owners that are so entitled that they can’t see beyond their own needs.

HighHeelsOnCobblestones · 13/07/2024 11:39

Dogs in a building mean we don’t go in or we leave; being in enclosed spaces with a dog risks DS2 having an asthma attack and needing another ambulance. As a result, we only go to places which don’t allow dogs but this is getting harder to do. I frequently see people on here saying those that are allergic or don’t like dogs should find somewhere dog free; go somewhere else. As you can see from some replies here, even that’s no guarantee. We research places online to find ones where dogs aren’t allowed, we have to, but then on arrival find people are ignoring the rules. And, talking about lack of options, if there’s dogs in a building, we don’t go in, we go home.

Now we’re unlikely to go camping anytime soon; we did glamping on a dog free site once and the DC weren’t keen! Though I used to camp several times a year when I was younger as every family holiday was a camping holiday. People would camp with dogs, though we never did with ours, and in all that time I never saw any in the toilet/shower blocks. I’ve just looked at the website of one of the campsites we stayed at, the T&Cs state “No pets to enter the facilities block” it’s possible to find this out before you go. If the website doesn’t say, phone them. It’s not ok to be ignoring the rules of the campsite because you didn’t think to check if it was fully suitable for your needs meanwhile forgetting about those who checked it was suitable for theirs.

PixieLaLar · 13/07/2024 11:40

Oh seriously! A dog put its snout under a cubical…oh no how absolutely awful for you how will you recover from this traumatic event?!

I would prefer noisy whiney kids were left outside but we all just get on with it don’t we…..

Tutorpuzzle · 13/07/2024 11:43

@helpfulperson

Absolutely!

But I have to go now as my dog is demanding her walk, including cafe stop, trip to the loo, and then a quick wander round John Lewis. 🐶

This kind of attitude seems a good reason to not bother forming relationships with other humans tbh, so many spiteful, angry and frustrated people around who have to try and make others feel shit for having a bit of happiness in their lives.

I wouldn't and don't take my dogs somewhere that says no dogs, it's about basic respect for other people, but as the OP has said this is something that's sadly lacking in all walks of life, some of them happen to own dogs.
