To think that dogs shouldn't be in toilets?

I'm currently camping.

There's signs on the toilet / shower block door clearly indicating "No Dogs". Not small signs. Very obvious.

Went for a shower first thing this morning and a woman brought a dog into the toilet next to me. It poked its head under the gap and had a sniff. I just ignored it.

Took my daughter an hour later and whilst I'm waiting for her, another woman brings another dog in. This time, thinking maybe she has missed the sign, I said, very politely and calmly "Oh it's no dogs in here".

She immediately became defensive, saying there's no one else to look after him (there's a fence outside she could have tied him to) and that he would "cry" if left outside. Errm, so what? Dogs whine. It's not the end of the world.

AIBU to think that if the signs say "no dogs" then it means "no dogs" and not, "Well ok your dog can come in because it might whine if left alone for a minute"?

Agree. Just tie it up outside. Campsite toilets have enough grass and mud being walked in without dogs adding to the dirt. It's also pretty unusual to camp alone so people could leave dogs back with their companions.
The dog craze has got out of hand. I actively avoid known dog friendly cafes in my town now.

I now go to the cafes that are dog free and I have a dog.

Wideskye · 13/07/2024 10:45

To clarify, I go to dog free cafes in my town and leave the dog at home.

I really sympathise with people who can't leave their dogs - my own hates being left - but equally I don't think that means you get to just take them with you anyway, regardless of any rules in place.

Either travel with someone so your dog never needs to be left, or book accommodation that suits your needs. It's not really fair that other people have to deal with your dog in places that don't allow them.

dottiedodah · 13/07/2024 10:49

So many people are anti dog now .More well trained well cared for dogs please!. I never leave mine anywhere ,No idea whos around!

Abc1weabc1 · 13/07/2024 10:50

Okay so dog is tied up outside toilets and kids come along and tease it. Dog bites kid.

Better to have a dog in the toilets than the above scenario.

I camp solo with 2 dogs and usually leave them secure at my pitch.

Can't or won't?

Willmafrockfit · 13/07/2024 10:50

i walk my dog
i need to use the public toilet
thus i take the dog in with me

i dont do solo camping - but if i did i would again have to take the dog with me and would be unimpressed with the campsite rules

Anotherones · 13/07/2024 10:50

I’d rather a dog than a man.

The temperature can rise from 24C to 38C within 10 minutes, let alone if it’s been sitting in the sun at a campsite all day.

Hardly a problem in the UK at the moment.

It would have been only 2 weeks ago when I was camping and it was 26 degrees all week.

Both?

My dog can be left for short periods without an issue, but I still wouldn't leave him tied up alone in a strange place. I don't trust other people and I'd worry about him getting hurt or escaping.

It's the entitlement that bothers me. Imagine if everyone decided the rules don't apply to their special circumstances.

I don't think that behaviour is limited to dog owners unfortunately. Seems to be society in general at the moment.

So you're not actually bothered about dogs been in the toilet, just the entitlement of people you see to be ignoring the rules? Because other than that you haven't really explained what's so offensive about a small dog in a public loo?

Terrible advice. Never leave a dog inside a car.

Cars can get incredibly hot in summer. The temperature can rise from 24C to 38C within 10 minutes, let alone if it’s been sitting in the sun at a campsite all day.

If you know you will have to leave your dog in the car for a while, you have either park in the shade or get internal window shades. Not a problem here at the moment.

If you were solo camping with your dog, surely you'd pick a dog-friendly campsite that allowed you to take him/her with you all the time then?

What about people that are scared of dogs and can’t access a basic amenity, because dog owners will not train their pets to be alone for a few minutes.

helpfulperson · 13/07/2024 10:57

I camp a lot on sites where most people have dogs. never seen a dog taken into the toilet. Why do some dog owners think they are more important than everyone else? There are always options.

mondaytosunday · 13/07/2024 10:57

Take a ferry frequently. You cannot leave your dog in the car. As it's a three hour drive to the ferry I often need to use the toilet on my trip. It is very tricky to negotiate two dogs into a toilet stall! Once or twice a kind lady offered to hold them while I went in the stall.
There are nice people around occasionally.
I can't leave them 'tied up outside'. One would get stressed, you aren't allowed to leave them unattended, and there's really nothing to tie them too that they couldn't drag along in an effort to find me.
If dogs are welcome on a site, they should be welcome everywhere.

What is it that so much makes you want dogs to be feeling shite?

Some people don’t leave them because they want to be a responsible owner - not just for the dog’s sake but to ensure it behaves appropriately to others.

I think that’s what it comes down to. The sign was not thought through from a 360 degree practical view.

I suspect it was to save cleaning staff needing to mop up muddy paw prints.

No.

But dog-friendly isn't the same as "dogs allowed everywhere" - so if you're travelling solo, you need a plan for your dog while you do things like take a shower, or go to the shop etc.

If I was going to camp alone with my dog, I'd ring the site in advance and make sure he was allowed everywhere with me. If not, I jut wouldn't go.

JuliesName · 13/07/2024 11:02

Iheartmysmart · 13/07/2024 08:43

I used to go solo camping with my dog and if we were out walking I’d always take him into the toilets with me. There are some nasty bastards around and I’d never leave him tied up and unattended.

Then don't go solo camping in an area where dogs can't go in the bathroom? The rules apply to you, you're not special.

Giggorata · 13/07/2024 11:04

I can appreciate how annoying having badly behaved and poorly controlled dogs about the place must be, not only for non doggy people!

But tying a dog up alone is a crap idea: people interfering, barking, children approaching them, theft, etc.
Even in a British summer, cars can get too hot.

if I had any of my dogs with me when camping alone and dogs weren’t permitted in the loos, what could I do?

Go and and pee behind a hedge (carries its own risks for women)
Take them in with me late at night when less traffic, for showers and poos.
Go dirty or have a tent strip wash
Be constipated for the duration of my stay
Ask an unknown stranger to hold the dog (wouldn't work with mine)
Ask to leave the dog in the camp office for the duration
Buy a special tent loo (more expense)
Kennel the dogs(costs a fortune, even if it would work, which it wouldn't with one of mine)
Don't go at all

Even the best option, crating the dog in the tent, or in the car with all the doors open, isn't risk free, from theft or well meaning people interfering.

Not really about being entitled, more about lack of options.

Vallmo47 · 13/07/2024 11:05

I agree OP, and screw anyone with allergies- who cares about other people as long as they do the right thing by themselves. Not to mention people who are genuinely terrified of dogs - no sympathy most of the time because “oh MY dog isn’t a problem, MY dog is so lovely”. It’s beyond irritating. No issue whatsoever with dogs on lead outside who mind their own business with owners in control. But the rest, and there’s A LOT of inconsiderate people about. No dogs except guiding dogs inside. Full stop.

SpringHexagon · 13/07/2024 11:06

Never had to do it, but I certainly wouldn't tie my 12 year Labrador up to a fence outside either. Never have and never will leave my dog unattended outside whether it be toilets or shops. Can't really see what the issue is with dogs in a toilet though if I'm honest, not like it's a food establishment which I could understand more.
