To do beans on toast once a week?

MollyAndMuck · 12/07/2024 22:39

Doing a different work pattern soon and two nights a week will be a lot of pressure to pick up DCs (infant age) from after school, feed them and not end up putting to bed too late.

I can't cook from scratch these nights and realistically don't think I'll be organised enough to batch cook for both nights.

AIBU to give my kids beans on toast every week for one evening meal? I know it's UPF but at least it's some kind of veg and very quick. They'll be having a hot lunch at school and are pretty good at eating it.

The slow cooker is your friend OP. Whack it on before work - dinner done when home.
Alternatively, DH and I had stir fry tonight. I timed it - 9 minutes from starting to on plates. There is loads you can do that’s quick without resorting to UPF.

Or you can just have beans in toast every so often and it really isn't a big deal!

You'd think no one ever managed to grow up in one piece in the past, way before UPF was 'a thing' 🙄

I do enjoy beams in toast and don't really have it enough now I think about it. We introduced DD's a,American friends to it earlier this year when they came to visit. They were sceptical until they'd finished their first mouthful!

Pesto pasta was a big favourite too in our house. Fresh pasta -simply as it cooks so quickly and a jar of pesto.

Horrified at all these suggested modifications.

Cucumber?

A little chopped this or that?

Adding a tin of cannellini beans?

Absolutely not. Grated cheese and Worcestershire sauce are all you need.

Henderson's here - it's not the dine thing to own Worcestershire sauce in Sheffield 😂 😉

@GiveMeMySoddingCokeZero
i agree entirely. Kebabs can just be grilled meat and salad, what is wrong with that?

I remember a survey by our health authority via the school asking how often your children eat sausages. Not all sausages are equal and what kind of a judgemental question is that? I may have written a bit of an essay at that question.

Presumably they were concerned the local parental neurosis quotient might dip below national averages 🙄

Fucking sausages.

@HcbSS - sorry to derail, can you please tell me the recipe for your quick stir fry?
I always find prepping/chopping the veg takes ages..!
Thank you!!

I’m not the poster you’re asking, but in my case it’s cheating - buy bags of ready chopped veg or even bags of frozen veg, chopped or otherwise. Bung in frying pan.

mydamnfootstuckinthedoor · 13/07/2024 12:15

with grated cheese on top it's a perfectly well-balanced meal.

Pleaseleavemealone0 · 13/07/2024 12:18

My teenagers have this once a week. Dc2 has it with cheese as well. Dc3 likes it with scrambled eggs.

I think DH could live on beans on toast if he needed to. And vegan DB’s fav meal is jacket potato with beans & cheese. I love beans on toast. Have it for breakfast, lunch or tea.

So you've got a aDH like mine! That and salad on other days and he'd be happy

Needmorelego · 13/07/2024 12:20

My Iceland delivery is running late so I can't have my planned Hoops on Toast for lunch 😭

soupfiend · 13/07/2024 11:13

Nothing wrong with spaghetti hoops but wheres the iron?

They are fortified. There's about a third of your daily allowance (as a pre menopausal woman) in half a big can.

milkysmum · 13/07/2024 12:26

We frequently have beans on toast. My teens bloody love it! Stick some red onion it, some grated cheese on top, and you have yourself a top quality meal 👌

Sothisiit · 13/07/2024 12:28

Beans on toast especially wholemeal bread is quite a well balanced meal, with plenty of protein and fibre.
Stopping getting in a twist about it,it's fine to serve a quick dinner.

I know what you mean. A friend of ours invites us to lunch sometimes. He always ‘does a casserole’ in the slow cooker. No matter what the ingredients are, they all taste very similar.

Really surprised to find people saying this, thought it was just me. I've given up on mine, no matter what recipe or how much seasoning, there's always a slow cooker taste and texture especially to veg. Also I always had to put it in the garage as I hated the way it made the house smell of food.

bluecomputerscreen · 13/07/2024 12:41

omlette is only a fast meal if you discount washing up the utensils...

Noshowlomo · 13/07/2024 12:45

Haha @Shityshitybangbang pretty much any lovely food I describe as sexy. I don’t actually think it’s sexual, but it is sexy! 😂😂

Bjorkdidit · 13/07/2024 12:46

But all meals are going to require a degree of washing up, whether it's a bowl and fork to whisk eggs or a bowl or pan to heat beans.

It's quite strange to single out an omelette as not fast based on the washing up, especially as the pan itself doesn't need washing.

@LuckySantangelo35 I'm just not a fan of baked beans also psychologically (😂) I see it as a snack (awaiting the MN onslaught)

No, no, no.

You don't cook* a snack.

It's a light meal.

(*Making toast and heating beans and whatever adjustments you make is cooking, before anyone starts.)

@MollyAndMuck Waitrose Essentials beans are lovely 4 tins for £2

M and S beans are much the same price, I usually put a few drops of Tabasco in to sharpen them up.

lowflyingtitties · 13/07/2024 13:14

You cannot beat beans on toast. We have toastie nights too. Ham, cheese, beans, it all goes in. I love those nights. That breville toastie maker was money well spent. I cook eggs in it too 👍triangle shaped eggs.

Opinionwontchangeluv · 13/07/2024 13:27

Nothing wrong

Differentstarts · 13/07/2024 13:31

I hope people on here thinking beans on toast is the worst thing ever and who seem obsessed with never letting a drop of upf pass their lips aren't passing their ed onto their children. Balance is key.

@MasterBeth

its not a snack, a snack is a bag or crisps or an apple- not a full on meal!!

Ikr? I quite often just have a bagel. Perhaps I’ll die at 50”

lovely. Put some salmon or tuna in it and enjoy with a glass of milk and you’ll celebrate your 100th!

BigDahliaFan · 13/07/2024 13:50

Buy a toastie maker…cheese toastie and beans to ring the changes.
