Late School Start Monday

PuttingDownRoots · 11/07/2024 14:40

Primary School has announced that pupils do not have to be in school on Monday until 10am on Monday due to the football. (However it is open from normal time)

DH believes this is not good, a d setting a bad example

I thinkbthe school is being pragmatic and trying to keep their Stats up... because children will be up late so will be tired and grumpy on Monday morning... so more kate marks and more absences.

However... there has been several occasions where there have been school trips getting back at 10pm... and they were expected in at normal time the next day.

So... is the school being fair here?

(We aren't football fans, but we know people are excited!)

YABU... its a big event, the late start is justified
YANBU... children should be in school at normal time

10pm isn't that late for primary aged kids.

This explains why week in week out I have to teach children who are too tired to learn. Unless UKS2, it really is.

PregnantWithHorrors · 12/07/2024 17:30

10pm is a best case scenario anyway. The game will finish then or just before if there's no need for extra time and penalties. If England win, clearly the DC are going to stay up to watch them get the trophy, which with all the pissing about is going to add another quarter of an hour. And not everyone will be watching at home.

Auburngal · 12/07/2024 17:31

Noticed a small sign on the door to Lidl this morning to say store will be opening an hour later.

KO is at 8pm. If it goes to dreaded penalties, it will be 10:45pm they will be doing them.

Schools here isn’t an issue as closed yesterday or today

I have seen parents taking their children doing trick n treating at 11pm when Halloween is on a school night.

Besides who opens their door at 11pm to strangers?

It’s not a one off. There will always be football. There will always be another match, another final.
I’ll be happy if the team wins because domestic violence rises when they lose.

It rises when they win too. Just not by as much as when they lose.

Well very few bosses will be allowing late starts so why should schools? And who will look after the kids while having a lie in if the parents have to be at work at normal time?

Because we're talking about children. Not adults.

How often does England get to the final of an international tournament? Not often. We haven't one won in my lifetime. It really is a one off.

The women have won much more recently than that.

I seem to remember England winning the Euros back in 2022......

Or does women's football not count?

Yes. My children (KS2) still sleep a solid 11 hours a night (8.30-7.30). I’ve been told on here that they go to bed far too early, they sleep too much, blah blah blah, but they excel academically, are both county champions at their particular sport, are never tired and grumpy etc. Their friends who don’t go to bed until late regularly are chronically over tired. Kids need sleep.

Another frustrating thing...

The school sends out an email every Monday saying which class had the best attendance and how many children were late that week.

Weve just had the updated Fines letter saying how much its going to be next year.

But suddenly, just for one thing... its fine to be late.

Its the hypocrisy and inconsistency that's jarring, rather than them actually starting 1hr15mins late.

They know that there will be tons of kids who suddenly come down with 'vomiting and diarrhoea on Saturday night' and will be off Monday. But if they know they can come in slightly later, most will not suddenly succumb to this mystery illness that affects absolutely nobody on Friday morning but is all over the school by the weekend, to disappear and not happen to anybody at all on Sunday or Monday.

I'm expecting the trip to work on Monday morning (when I'll be in at my usual time, along with the rest of the staff) to be considerably quieter.

It's not saying it's OK to take time off for football as much as it's saying 'Just get them in for the rest of the day and we won't have to waste our morning listening to you all lying on the voicemail'.

I didn’t mean that only men love it. But I find men’s obsession with it much more unsettling than women’s love for it.

You can’t just say that it’s popular because it’s popular. There’s more to it than that. It’s ingrained in our culture in a very toxic way, has lots of issues and problems way worse than an hour off school, but even that is sending the message that it’s more important than anything else because it’s the football.

Also - aware I am sounding like a snob now but I don’t care- it’s pandering to a specific kind of parent. The parents who stayed up all night to watch the election didn’t take their kids in late. Not saying you can only be interested in one or the other, there’s a huge crossover - but there’s a type of football fan who won’t take their kid to school the next day because of a football game the previous night, and that behaviour is being validated by the schools.

Edited

It has been universally played in schools for boys for a long time and now more competitively for girls too. That is why it popular and becoming even more so.

I am going to hazard a guess you have either never even been to a match or haven't recently because if you had you would know that nowadays there aren't the issues there may have been in the 70s. It's very much a family event.

Specific kind of parent 🙄 Oh dear! Yes you sound like a snob. We are lawyers and kids have been privately educated (so probably don't fit your stereotype of what you perceive to be a football fan) but even their schools allowed them to watch in school, come in late etc.

Your comment about the election is plain daft. It's not because parents are staying up to 10.45 that they allowed to come in late but because children all over the country will be being allowed to stay up later than usual to watch. Parents that followed the election may also be football fans as shocking as that may be to you.

Do you have an issue when the children at all types of schools are allowed in late after they compete in Young Choices or are choirs an acceptable reason for you and less offensive?

Why not you do you and take your kids in at the usual time and let others do them, enjoy the spectacle and celebrate a win (hopefully) or at least enjoy a shared experience with their school friends. If your child doesn't want to join in or you don't want them to that's fine too. But your outdated views are ridiculous.

It is not the same level of football as the men's game yet. Hopefully the rise in its popularity will mean it will be one day and great strides are being made.

I find it more interesting.

PregnantWithHorrors · 12/07/2024 18:14

I love women's football. But some of the things I love about it are the things that are in the men's game since it became so money soaked. The dives are starting to creep in more, sadly.

Beekeepingmum · 12/07/2024 18:23

So much pandering to the football fans. My kids aren't interested in football. Can they bank a morning off for after a world netball final?

Probably, yeah. I doubt there'll be any consequences if you bring them in late one morning because of it.

Not really ,wether you like it or not ,there just isn't the same level of interest or revenue in women's football.

Auburngal · 12/07/2024 19:04

This is the first final that England (men’s and women’s) have played on foreign soil.

The others have been played in Wembley

They doesn't detract from the fact they won the euros in 2022 🤷🏼‍♀️

In our house we're just as interested in the lionesses as we are the men's team.

Plenty of sports have been played in schools for years. That’s not why it’s popular.

I’m not taking about problems from the 70s I’m talking about modern day problems including overpaid men with over inflated egos treating women terribly and being idolised by young boys and men.

Your private school can let them come in late, you’re paying for that hour whether they come in or not.

Plenty of people on this thread are saying it’s not for the children, it’s for the parents who will be hungover. Yes I am a snob about those parents. Some parents I know were up until the early hours refreshing the election results as they came in, all their children were at school on time next day.

Recently children at our school have been involved in late night orchestra performances and dance shows at theatres, none have been permitted to come in late.

My views are not outdated, the idea that football is the most important thing is outdated, misogynistic and embarrassing. Take your kids to school ffs.

Noone anyway on this thread has said it is the most important thing.

You do you. Let others do them. You seem to be unnaturally obsessed with something that isn't important at all in the grand scheme of school or life.
