Late School Start Monday

PuttingDownRoots · 11/07/2024 14:40

Primary School has announced that pupils do not have to be in school on Monday until 10am on Monday due to the football. (However it is open from normal time)

DH believes this is not good, a d setting a bad example

I thinkbthe school is being pragmatic and trying to keep their Stats up... because children will be up late so will be tired and grumpy on Monday morning... so more kate marks and more absences.

However... there has been several occasions where there have been school trips getting back at 10pm... and they were expected in at normal time the next day.

So... is the school being fair here?

(We aren't football fans, but we know people are excited!)

YABU... its a big event, the late start is justified
YANBU... children should be in school at normal time

I am hoping my head makes the decision to do the same.

Yesterday our attendance went down to 91% and we had something like 15 lates after 9am. It's a practical way to try to combat that. I don't particularly like the footie because my police (DA) reports go up as well, but I think it's worth it, especially when we have a number of kids that are really anxious about attendance and punctuality and their parents don't actually care.

VisitationRights · 12/07/2024 07:24

It is ridiculous and probably has more to do with how adults will be feeling rather than the children.

itsgettingweird · 12/07/2024 07:28

Makes sense.

Rather than having loads of unauthorised absences and late marks they are allowing those who will sleep in to sleep in.

People are more likely to send their kids in if they know being late doesn't matter.

marcopront · 12/07/2024 07:41

A question for the people saying would they do it for the women's euros, Wimbledon, the Olympics etc

Please give the dates when these took place on a Sunday and finished after 10:00 pm.

LlynTegid · 12/07/2024 07:43

I understand but don't agree with it, though a useful lesson in disappointment is likely.

LlynTegid · 12/07/2024 07:45

The 2028 Olympics are in LA, though largely in school holidays. Some of the events with likely team GB medals will be late in the evening UK time,

PrincessHoneysuckle · 12/07/2024 07:57

Ds is school is doing the same.9.30 start yay!

So let's what happens in 4 years time.

I'm still waiting for evidence that it could have happened and didn't.

What makes me so angry is the pure hypocrisy that there is usually NO excuse to be late or have a day off school.
I guess because I’m not English and asked to take my DD out of school one day earlier as her sisters have finished the day before so we can travel and see my family for the first time in 2 years they say no and must come in right to the last day even though they will finish at 12:30.
Not one response on here has explained why football is more important than my family.
If schools are going to be so stuck on attendance and lateness then football is a piss poor excuse.
Either you allow some flexibility or you don’t

Normally I would be all for this and love sports and think it would be fun but the schools have ruined it and I have no respect for them and now even more likely to take them out of school now as my reasons are more important than a silly game.

I think if they are arriving back at 10pm from a school trip then they should extend the start to 10am on those days too.

But if they are open as usual then there isn't really an issue because you can send them in as normal so it doesn't impact you. They haven't said you can't come in till 10.

I know a few people who've booked Monday off or half a day once England made it to the finals.

I agree with this.

crumblingschools · 12/07/2024 09:48

I’m sure the school are thinking of the parents not the pupils, they just know that there will be some hungover parents who aren’t going to be up in time to get DC to school.

Other sporting events like Wimbledon, Olympics probably wouldn’t result in the same level of inebriation

Meh it's for the benefit of parents and teachers. Although I can't imagine the majority would absolutely need a later start at work on Monday.
Hardly a 'cultural' event as someone upthread called it, but it is nice to get children to enthuse about a national team where the scopes are high.
I don't see a problem with a later start, especially so close to end of school year.

In what way do teachers, who have to be in at the normal time, benefit? I'd much rather have everyone in than children arriving in dribs and drabs. This is classic criticism of teachers without stopping to think for just a moment about the actual situation.

crumblingschools · 12/07/2024 09:59

If school is open at normal time, they are just closing registration later, teachers will have to be at usual time

MargaretThursday · 12/07/2024 10:06

Ds is very smug that he has a free Monday morning so doesn't need to be up. (He's 6th form)
I suggested that he goes to bed really early and wakes at 6am and watches the highlights. His look of horror was very funny. Apparently my jokes aren't funny. 🤣

LoveWine123 · 12/07/2024 10:13

There is a lot of overthinking here and I don’t really understand what the problem is. Take your daughter on time or take her in at 10am. Let her watch the game or don’t let her watch the game. We are not a football family so unlikely to watch it, but this is a big thing for this nation and a great positive for everyone. I really don’t see why anyone would make this into an issue.

Spirallingdownwards · 12/07/2024 06:59

I would look at the viewing figures for each and that may give you a clue as to why they do it for the men's football.

Perhaps the viewing figures would be higher for other sports if they were given as much cultural importance as football.

The football obsession is unhealthy in this country. I think a lot of men love it because they think it could/should have been them. Success by association.

And domestic violence increases when England loses

AllesAusLiebe · 12/07/2024 11:01

We haven't heard anything from DS's school, but honestly, this makes me laugh. I do not recognise these primary school kids that enjoy a lie in. DS has no interest in watching the game, but even if he did, I could guarantee he would still be up at 6am the next day! We'll be going to work as normal, so no change for us.

DH also told me that as a kid, he used to regularly attend night games for the local team on a Tuesday night and manage to turn up to school on time. He has nice memories of it and didn't need a lie in the next day.

I find all of this quite stupid. Surely this is a pain for the teachers, too? In the week before the Summer holidays, maintaining some sense of calm must be hard enough without having staggered start times to deal with also?

It's cute to watch a whole country have a total breakdown because you might finally win something, though. Let's just hope you have the VAR officials on your side again - they seem quite fond of Spain, too.

My 10 and 8 year olds love a lie in! If they go to bed later than usual, they wake up later than usual.

Haha I stand corrected. Maybe it's just me who's unlucky! 😂It never happens - DS is like the household alarm clock.

What about other cultural activities? Cult

Caththegreat · 12/07/2024 11:51

Why does togetherness only have to be about football?
