Late School Start Monday

PuttingDownRoots · 11/07/2024 14:40

Primary School has announced that pupils do not have to be in school on Monday until 10am on Monday due to the football. (However it is open from normal time)

DH believes this is not good, a d setting a bad example

I thinkbthe school is being pragmatic and trying to keep their Stats up... because children will be up late so will be tired and grumpy on Monday morning... so more kate marks and more absences.

However... there has been several occasions where there have been school trips getting back at 10pm... and they were expected in at normal time the next day.

So... is the school being fair here?

(We aren't football fans, but we know people are excited!)

YABU... its a big event, the late start is justified
YANBU... children should be in school at normal time

Our school is doing the same and I’m absolutely fuming. How can school justify it for a stupid football match but when they are so stuck on rules for things that I would say are more important to myself and us as a family it’s tough.
I’m all for relaxed rules as long as it’s consistent. We just now lie to school about anything we need to do as a family. I know a friend whose kids were refused an afternoon off to attend their parents wedding. It’s just so hypocritical and inconsistent.

It's a cult and you must obey

Why does togetherness only have to be about football?

Didn't we get a holiday for the Coronation? I think we did so not always football.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 12/07/2024 11:55

I think it's a nice thing to do, my daughters school are also doing this, though she'll be in the normal time as isn't interested in the football

Ponoka7 · 12/07/2024 12:02

I think that the school should be open, like an after school art club type thing for those who need to put their children in, but it's fine to not take the register and start lessons until 10. It also stops some parents from driving over the limit. Football is our national game. It brings in massive amounts of revenue and in places like Anfield/Everton in Liverpool, it keeps businesses open and provides a lot of jobs. Even if you aren't into Football, you should appreciate the industry. I partly think that flowers are a waste of money but people need jobs. My GC school has used the football (and will the Olympics) to teach flags and other things. There's worry about WC boys not engaging with education, events like this are useful.

LadyGrinningSoul8517 · 12/07/2024 12:31

It's just bloody football.

Even if England win, it's literally just the people running around kicking the ball that actually won.
I hate it when people say 'we won', no WE didn't.

The whole country doesn't need to recover from a football match.

I don't object to late starts in general, our school have done it for legitimately good reasons before, but football is not one of them.

IvyIvyIvy · 12/07/2024 12:38

I agree with your DH. I get football is important to certain groups of people but schools don't do late starts for other global sporting events or Eurovision or last night of the proms or the election results or the referendum. I get some families revolve around football but we don't. But we revolve around other things and don't expect the world to stop for a late night. If it wasn't England in the final, would it be ok for a kid of another nationality to turn up late for school the next day?

I also agree that it sets a bad example to children that they can stroll into school or work later in life with an excuse like that. If you can't get up in time the next day then you shouldn't stay up.

crumblingschools · 12/07/2024 12:48

@IvyIvyIvy I bet it is more about drunken/hungover parents not the children, but school won't want to label it as such. They know there is going to be a substantial number of parents not getting up in time/going to work so know that not all children will be in on time.

Hence, the reason they don't do it for trips etc

Didimum · 12/07/2024 12:59

Our school is doing 11am. I think it's a bit ridiculous to be honest, but can't be bothered to get that worked up about it. What with Tesco closing early, the rumours of a bank holiday, and now this, all I can think is that they didn't make this much fuss for the Lionesses (who performed so much better), so that says it all really, doesn't it? The messaging is pretty bad, and I agree that the country does not need time to 'recover' from a football match.

My main grievance is that most young kids do not 'sleep in' anyway, regardless of when they go to bed. They will spring awake at 6:30 if they go to bed at 7pm or 10pm, so it's not really a thing.

parkrun500club · 12/07/2024 13:02

The country is in the final, there’s only an opportunity for this once every four years

These days it's every year. Every two years for the Europeans and Worlds respectively and the same for the women's.

I think some schools did this after the Womens Euros as well.

It would help if it was scheduled a bit earlier. Is there really any need for it to start at 9pm in Germany? I would have thought 7pm would be fine. It's unlikely to go to penalties given it's Spain but if it did, it finishes at midnight in Germany - what on earth is that all about?

Yes the one reason to tell people they can stay in bed is so that they don't drive while still over the limit from the night before.

parkrun500club · 12/07/2024 13:04

It's a cult and you must obey exactly, it's so tedious. Why can't people who want to do things, do them, and leave the rest of us alone!

CatamaranViper · 12/07/2024 13:06

Oh I wish our school did this!

Both our companies have given us the morning off on Monday but we'll still have to be up to take DS to school. I'd just quite like a lie in! Not related to the football lol

Unlikely. That was an afternoon match on 31st July, so in the summer holidays.

Unless you're saying they did it for matches earlier in the tournament? I'd be very surprised.

Dontcallmescarface · 12/07/2024 13:11

The school should insist that all the DC are there at the normal time otherwise they have opened themselves wide to parents not bringing their DC to school on time on other occasions . "Sorry but Jimmy won't be in school until after 10am on Wednesday because there's something on the telly he wants to watch that doesn't finish until late. It's ok though because you let it happen when the football was on". Of course we all know that the late start is not for the children's benefit at all.

Notchangingnameagain · 12/07/2024 13:13

Lovely, I hope our schools do this.

I still get goose bumps when I think about some of the games played when the school put them on in the hall. The atmosphere was electric and the children had a blast. Wonderful memory.

TempsPerdu · 12/07/2024 13:15

Same here OP - we’ve just received a similar email. I think it’s ridiculous, and hate football’s hegemonic status in our culture - the whole thing is toxic IMO. We’ve already had a non-uniform day to celebrate England reaching the semis. No mention whatsoever of the Olympics happening later this summer.

I’m a governor at the school, and given that DD is a keen footballer herself I’ll be keeping a close eye on the school to see what, if anything, happens with the Women’s Euros next year…

TakeOnFlea · 12/07/2024 13:16

"I think some schools did this after the Womens Euros as well."

Well they didn't but ok 🤣

People need to seriously lighten up and remember the excitement as a kid when something big and out of the ordinary happens.

crumblingschools · 12/07/2024 13:18

@Dontcallmescarface are you referring to parents or staff when saying it isn’t for children’s benefit? All staff will need to be in as school is open, it’s just the closing of registration that is late

TakeOnFlea · 12/07/2024 13:20

"Why does togetherness only have to be about football?"

The Coronation
The Jubilee
VE Day
The Queen's Funeral

And that's just the last few years. Some very short memories on this thread. Misers.

PollyPeep · 12/07/2024 13:20

I'd be annoyed too. It's the principle that men's football is something that everyone will be excited about. As a family we have no interest in football, men's or women's. I find the culture around football gross. And yet, by setting this rule that children can come in later because there was a football match on TV the evening before, it sets the expectation that everyone will be watching it. Why should my child be made to feel left out because he doesn't like watching football? Should we all be forced to watch football? I don't see this happening with any other "cultural event". Are we going to let kids come in late because there was a tennis match the evening before?

Also echo PP, even I know the women's football team won something recently so not sure why this is such a big deal.

Matronic6 · 12/07/2024 13:21

I don't get the big deal and why people are 'fuming' about it. The school is open. They can send their child at the usual time. They can choose to do it or not.

I think it's because the school has said it's ok for kids to turn up late because there was a football match on the night before. It sets a pretty weird example on lots of fronts.

CatamaranViper · 12/07/2024 13:30

I would struggle to pick many of the England team out of a line up and the only rule I really know is you're supposed to score goals past the other teams goalie, but my god I get swept up in the football fever when the world cup and euros are on.

MinnieMountain · 12/07/2024 13:32

Or plenty of us who also don’t give a crap about the royal family @TakeOnFlea .
