Reasons you wouldn’t move to US

1000 replies

Preiu · 10/07/2024 14:08

Dh has been offered a job in the US. The increase in salary would put us into a completely different wealth bracket but I really don’t want to move.

  • fear of home invasion with guns
  • school shooting - guns in general I guess
  • American exceptionalism attitude annoys me
  • Being away from family
  • Not having Europe on doorstep

Can I ask if you have any other reasons

All of those, plus:

Trump
Politics in general
Healthcare
Employment law
Lack of culture/arts/history
Food quality/chemical additives - much of what's classed as food ingredients is actually banned in the most of the world
Insincerity/fakery in customer service
Drive everywhere culture
Flag-waving 'patriotism' (it's cultish)

Omg I despair. Lack of art and culture and history 🤣

I went to California recently on business & I was shocked at the homelessness there, drugs were rife & immigration is out of control too. CA used too be a beautiful state, it's a shadow of what it once was. The governor Newsome has ruined California, not surprising being a democrat. New York is a cesspit now too & shock horror they have a democrat governor too. I wouldn't take my kids to any democrat run state, it's not safe for them & even for me I felt vulnerable while I was there.

What utter drivel, blaming democrats for drug use and homelessness.

Presumably whatever business you went to California on didn't require a grasp on spelling and grammar, either.

Awesome!

Guns, school shootings…where I live, Americans are arriving in their droves to come for a safer childhood for their kids

DdraigGoch · 02/08/2024 23:15
  1. the noise in cities ….when I get back to the uk it’s just so much more peaceful, slower, calmer (comparing London to say NY or LA)
  2. everywhere is built around massive high ways which probably contributes to my point 2
When I visited Bucharest I was struck by how American the infrastructure was. Yes, it had the communist-era tower blocks, but the roads in the city were many lanes wide and very loud. Quite a contrast to most other European cities. Traffic noise is a real detriment to quality of life.

Of course the communities in the US that had highways bulldozed through them were poor and/or black. Like most of the negatives listed on this thread, you can buy your way out of them if you're rich but you really don't want to be poor. Or black.

My friend lived in Michigan for a while and generally enjoyed it, with a few exception/niggles obviously.

fast forward to her son starting school. They were told not to send their kids to school in the shoes with a flashing light in the sole - because it can give away where you are when hiding from an active shooter. He was 5.

that was the thing that made her realise no way could she stay and they moved back a few months later

I am Irish and have lived in america 20 years. Grew up in rural Ireland. Suicide was....and still is, a massive problem. I know dozens who killed themselves, not one of them shot themselves. Does it matter? They are still dead.

US 43163 Gun Homicides.
67% of those are suicide.

If they get rid of the guns...those people are still dead. And in Ireland, they are also dead. They just dont get counted in that bucket.

Are you sure? The definition of homicide does not normally include suicide, unless it is a joint homicide/suicide where one person kills the other and then themselves.

I am absolutely certain.
pulled from Wikipedia.
The number including suicide creates much more "Wow" factory.

PS. You are correct on the definition of Homicide. It should not include suicide.
But on the numbers side, anytime the 40K to 50K deaths are tagged....that includes the 67% suicide number.

ExtrovertedIntrovert1 · 05/08/2024 20:43
  1. Guns
  2. Expensive healthcare

Otherwise I would. There are parts of it that look absolutely amazing.

I'll add "suicide rate twice as high as the UK" to my list of reasons not to go.

MrsLedwidge · 05/08/2024 21:19

Home invasion with guns would worry me too. Also, the quality of the US food concerns me (massive portions, poor quality). The cost of good quality food (fancy grocery stores) is extortionate imo.

If you’re well off (with good insurance), I’d actually embrace the US medical care. The NHS scares the shit out of me. I much preferred the private healthcare we had overseas to being in the UK (I use a private GP now we’re back in the UK, but the only emergency option is the hell of NHS A&E).

mugglewump · 20/08/2024 12:40

What would put me off the most is the minimal holiday, the live to work attitude, poor quality food and healthcare situation. What's the point in earning all that extra money (exchange rate adjusted even), if you get no time to enjoy it?

user1484056932 · 20/08/2024 14:02

Holiday allowance is abysmal in the US, healthcare is a nightmare paying for everything, can also add guns to the list & politically USA is a mess too.

Ilovelifeverymuch · 31/08/2024 19:44

@Preiu did you end up moving or turned down the move?

OonaStubbs · 31/08/2024 20:59

If I moved to America I would want to live somewhere like Wyoming, Montana, one of the Dakotas. Certainly none of the major cities.

decionsdecisions62 · 01/09/2024 02:39

They like the royal family too much and would probably think I had met them personally.

mjf981 · 01/09/2024 06:13

Climate change and forest fires. They're getting worse and worse and with Canada above them and on fire now every summer, large swathes of the country will see increasingly smokey skies. It happens every year in the western and northern states, and the NE had a taste of the future last year. Its really really confronting experiencing it first hand.

SummerTimeIsTheBest · 01/09/2024 07:54

They hardly get any paid annual leave
Health insurance costs

I'm American. From Montana, currently living the Dakota's. I don't think you understand what our winters are like. I've experienced -50 Fahrenheit degree weather. It's brutal but we all have a good sense of humor about. On a side note this thread is pretty ridiculous with misconceptions about America. I say that as an American who lived in Europe for a while pretty much most is inaccurate, if not downright lies. Shockingly I'm not dodging gun battles on my way to the restaurant for my biscuits and gravy with a side of Hershey's chocolate (the only chocolate we have) in my SUV to then drink my Budweiser beer but was late because a roundabout scared me so much I'm currently crying on the side of the road in a panic.

OonaStubbs · 02/09/2024 22:48

I don't mind cold weather.

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 02/09/2024 23:00

I just think the final word on this thread should be

TRUMP
