To let almost 10 year old DD walk to Greggs

We live in a medium sized city on a terraced street. At end & within sight of house is a Greggs. One small road to cross by our house (not a main road - small road between terraced houses). We've been trying to teach DD almost 10 some responsibility to get her ready for walking & travelling to school in Yr6 and then secondary. For context she is v tall and mature for her age. We let her pop to Greggs sometimes (about once a month) to get a sausage roll for breakfast. No issues so far however DD said this morning that they were asking questions like 'where's your Mum?'.

DD doesn't fully know this because trying to build her confidence but I still stand outside house and watch her from the porch, cross the small road and watch her walk in and then walk out then home. By this point I relocate to the window and have full line of sight of her walk.

AIBU?

Edit for context: it is 40 metres-ish away.

It's perfectly fine for a 10 year old to go to the shop alone. It's not fine for shop assistants to ask 'where's your Mum"

I’m going to be really un-MN now, or at least un-a-slice-of-MN…I reckon a Greggs sausage roll for breakfast every day would do no harm at all.

Certainly less harmful than having no breakfast at all and scant other food for the rest of the day, which is the life that many young ones are living.

thank goodness we have a change of Govt. Now, LP, get on with rolling out breakfast clubs for all children who need them, please. .

It's perfectly fine. Tell her to reply with "just outside" if they ask again. No one round here would bat an eyelid at a nine year old in a shop.

Are you serious???? 9? Not a chance! 9yr olds are farrrrrrr too young to properly assess & react to hazards and dangers, wow

We moved about 6 miles away from my daughter's primary school when she was 8 and used to catch the bus on her own. The bus stop is outside our house and directly outside her school. Guess what? She was absolutely fine. We really need to stop infantilising our children and realise that they are more capable than many people think.

JFC that's neglect. How the hell could an 8yr old fight off an abductor or know what to do if there was only one other adult on the bus and they touched her out of sight of the driver?
Just because nothing happened to her^ in your^ area, doesn't mean that would be the case for every other kid ffs

EnglishBluebell · 10/07/2024 20:42

@Ethylred It's puff pastry and sausage meat! How is that anymore processed than a homemade one made with puff pastry and sausage meat?! Because it's a chain brand?!?! 🤦‍♀️

EnglishBluebell · 10/07/2024 20:50

This thread reminds me of when I posted on a thread about food, with a photo of the ingredients in a jar of pasta sauce that had just tomatoes, basil and tiny bit of salt and I was ripped to shreds for using "UPF Junk" even though the ingredients were 100% natural!!! Apparently if it comes in a jar it's junk. The same thread had someone arguing that Radishes are junk because they come in plastic bags at the supermarket! 😂😂😂

LOL it's crossing a small road to get to Gregg's, not the the bloody M4.of you're 9, nearly 10 year old can't cross a road safely, you've done your job wrong!?

liveforsummer · 10/07/2024 20:53

My dd is just turned 11 and yesterday she got the bus in to the city centre and went to primark, tk maxx and wing stop with her still 10yo friend. If they are asking her I suspect they've had recent issues with kids causing trouble or trying to shop lift. YAB a bit unreasonable to watch her as mi h as you are but if you're sure she's not aware then that's ok

You think a sausage roll is a decent breakfast on a regular basis?

Who on this thread has said that??? Not me!!

How many 8 year olds are abducted by strangers in the UK?

Fucking hell. You're putting your child at more risk of harm by driving them 1 mile to school than letting them walk 1 mile to school.

EinekleineKatze · 10/07/2024 18:36

I didn't say is WAS banned.
I asked if you need to swear to make your point? You seem a tad invested.

In what?

thatstakingalongtimetoboil · 10/07/2024 20:59

I mean we have to let them go at some point dont we

HarrytheHobbit · 10/07/2024 21:02

@EnglishBluebell

Quit the hysteria. It's attitudes like yours that have lead to children being mollycoddled. She was perfectly safe on a busy bus. I wouldn't have let her go on her own if I hadn't thought she was safe. Aa a PP has said, abduction by strangers is extremely rare in this country that's why those rare cases make national headlines. BTW DD is in her thirties now.

Does every single thread, and every single subject on a thread, really deserve yet more Labour boosting?

liveforsummer · 10/07/2024 21:10

@EnglishBluebell it's perfectly normal for 8!year olds to get the bus to school round here. Generally they are private school kids as those at mainstream generally don't need a bus but plenty of those 8 year olds walk.

As for the sausage roll it's a better breakfast nutritionally for an active child than a bowl of coco pops 🙄

Lindtnotlint · 10/07/2024 21:21

I am so over-invested in the “sausage-roll” vs “roll with a sausage in” question.

personally I would gladly gobble either for a breakfast treat.

LaurieFairyCake · 10/07/2024 21:49

What hazards and dangers does the child have walking 40 meters down the road to the corner shop

Drivingnowhere · 13/07/2024 11:09

I feel like I live in an alternate universe reading these threads. I'd be very concerned if my DC didn't have the capability of walking to a shop alone by 9/10. Do you not teach your children road safety from a young age? Most kids round here are playing out/walking to school sans parents from around 7/8. Parents are doing their DC a massive disservice not allowing them age appropriate freedoms. No wonder there's so much anxiety in children on a level never seen before. They're being raised to think they're incompetent.

sanityisamyth · 15/07/2024 03:17

DS10 told me on Saturday that we'd run out of oven chips. He knows we don't get a delivery until Thursday. He volunteered to ride his bike down to the local supermarket (5 min cycle along the road), buy some chips and cycle home. He did just that and was fine!

It's fine. At that age I was taking two inner-city trains and a tram to school and back daily. In a huge city, living in a reasonably dodgy area, too.

I let my own child walk themselves to the shop and back without supervision from age 8. The youngest, now 8, probably not for a while (they are far less mature) but if you judge your daughter to be mature then of course they can pop to the shop down the road.

I agree with this comment; it depends on the child in question. Comments like “all 10 years olds can walk alone, go into the city centre, get buses, mine did that at that age blah blah blah” aren’t applicable to all dcs. It is subjective, and one size doesn’t fit all. Children can be ND, have hidden disabilities, or just not be street wise/mature enough. If somebody judges, they’re an ignorant twat quite frankly!

Op, you know your own child, nobody else. The greggs lady was just looking out for your dc, which isn’t a bad thing, may have though looks younger than age as well. I would rather people look out for kids than not, as they don’t know which are from good homes or not.

Clearinguptheclutter · 15/07/2024 10:42

I’d let my 9 year old do this. It’s fine.

My anxiety is a whole other thread!

@LiarLiarKnickersAblaze

its perfectly fine, they were probably just being chatty.

try to train yourself not to watch her, so that by senior school you're not so anxious. You'll train yourself for it to be normal for her to go out, on her own & return home perfectly safe
