To let almost 10 year old DD walk to Greggs

LiarLiarKnickersAblaze · 10/07/2024 08:36

We live in a medium sized city on a terraced street. At end & within sight of house is a Greggs. One small road to cross by our house (not a main road - small road between terraced houses). We've been trying to teach DD almost 10 some responsibility to get her ready for walking & travelling to school in Yr6 and then secondary. For context she is v tall and mature for her age. We let her pop to Greggs sometimes (about once a month) to get a sausage roll for breakfast. No issues so far however DD said this morning that they were asking questions like 'where's your Mum?'.

DD doesn't fully know this because trying to build her confidence but I still stand outside house and watch her from the porch, cross the small road and watch her walk in and then walk out then home. By this point I relocate to the window and have full line of sight of her walk.

AIBU?

Edit for context: it is 40 metres-ish away.

The sausage roll for breakfast isn't ideal as it's pretty much empty of decent nutrition, but it's fine as a rare treat.
the joy of living a life like this 🙄
Personally do not know a single person who is so particular about food.
Also for the pp saying tell Greggs what you're doing?? seriously, how the fuck did we all get to adulthood because I have no memory of this level of precious parenting.

lolly792 · 10/07/2024 14:01

@LiarLiarKnickersAblaze do you live in a particularly dodgy area?

I'm asking because you mentioned your anxiety about it. 40 yards away is absolutely reasonable for a 10 year old who will soon be off to secondary school and imo there's no need to watch from the porch. It's all about gradually letting go.

It is relatively dodgy yes. I don’t think watching her is the wrong decision right now but appreciate I don’t have to constantly watch. I’ll get there.

WelshNerd · 10/07/2024 14:52

I think it's fine for her to go.
Sausage roll or sausage bap though? That's an important distinction.

Have you misunderstood my comment deliberately?

I think the point is, there was absolutely no reason to comment on the food choice as that wasn't the question. To make a comment about the choice of food is just being judgemental, even though you followed it up with its fine as a rare treat. To have commented in the first place was unnecessary. So what if its not great nutrition. If it was a 40 meter walk to the fruit shop would you have felt the need to comment in a negative way?

Honourspren · 10/07/2024 16:59

It's fine. At that age I was taking two inner-city trains and a tram to school and back daily. In a huge city, living in a reasonably dodgy area, too.

I let my own child walk themselves to the shop and back without supervision from age 8. The youngest, now 8, probably not for a while (they are far less mature) but if you judge your daughter to be mature then of course they can pop to the shop down the road.

I thought it was relevant because a child having a Greggs for breakfast every now and then wouldn't really arouse much suspicion with the staff because it's normal behaviour, whereas the staff might start to get concerned if it became a very regular occurrence. In reality a sausage roll every so often is fine, but it's not really a great breakfast in terms of nutrition.
If a child was buying fruit then I'd think it was maybe for break time tbh.

If that was genuinely your thinking it’s an even worse comment! You think the staff in Greggs might be thinking of neglect - “suspicion” no less - if a child buys a sausage roll more than as a “rare treat”? Amazing.

CheeseWisely · 10/07/2024 17:12

Nothing to add except LOL at the posters who think the staff of Greggs would find someone buying a sausage roll at breakfast time in any way unusual GrinGrin

You think it would be ok for a child to be buying a Greggs sausage roll for breakfast routinely/every day? You wouldn't wonder why they can't/don't eat at home?

(As it is OP hasn't suggested it will be every day so this is kind of irrelevant).

A young child buying a sausage roll for breakfast every day?
(I know OP isn't suggesting doing this every day).

I grew up with a mother who was exactly this particular about food and I ended up with an eating disorder! It's definitely not as healthy as they'd like to think it is, the odd Gregg's sausage roll is not going to kill anyone.

user1471538283 · 10/07/2024 17:20

I was a very over protective DM but my DS at that age used to beg to be allowed to go to the convenience store by himself. Like you it was across a road but unlike you I couldn't see him all the way because we lived in a courtyard. After several trips with him and checking his road sense I let him go.

It's baby steps to get ready for adulthood.

SwanRivers · 10/07/2024 17:20

LiarLiarKnickersAblaze · 10/07/2024 13:42

Thanks all! Yeah the response from the sales assistant made me second guess our decision.

Maybe it’s just the parents I know but loads don’t give their kids that kind of freedom at this age!

What? Popping to the shop on the corner of the road in full view of the house is 'freedom'? 😳

I'd guess the staff just wondered how far she's had to travel to get there maybe.

Eh?
Accepting that a Greggs sausage roll isn't the healthiest/most nutritious food is accepting reality. Saying they should be eaten in moderation is accepting reality.
We don't ban any foods in our house, everything is OK in moderation/as a treat every now and then.
At no point did I say OPs child shouldn't have a sausage roll every now and then.

Who tf are you? I wasn't replying to you. I was replying to the comment about the joylessness of living with someone who is extremely particular about food.

lightsandtunnels · 10/07/2024 17:31

Oh for the love of God.

Unbelievable all the comments about OPs DD having a bloody sausage roll. As for the staff giving two shites about anyone buying a sausage roll instead of fruit. It's Greggs - they sell sausage rolls.
MN - just when you think you've heard it all ... 🙄

You see the part in bold in the 'joylessness' post you're replying to? Those are my exact words copied by the poster (she did that thing of quoting someone without mentioning them). Apparently it's 'very particular' to eat Greggs in moderation......🫣

This is growing arms and legs now.
I'm leaving you all to your Chinese whisper method of "discussion'.
@LiarLiarKnickersAblaze I'm sure it's fine. 😄

FinalCeleryScheme · 10/07/2024 17:36

I’m going to be really un-MN now, or at least un-a-slice-of-MN…I reckon a Greggs sausage roll for breakfast every day would do no harm at all.

Neither do I think a child being allowed up the shop for breakfast every day is any sign of neglect.

I genuinely fear for the children of food tyrants and faddists.

Kelly51 · 10/07/2024 17:38

@EinekleineKatze
You do know other families do things differently? What about the parents or single parent who have to leave for work before their child, leave them lunch money and things to eat for breakfast but child chooses to use lunch money in Greggs.
I'm as always amazed at the narrow mindedness on MN, that the concept of different ways of life/ habits etc are alien to many.

Clearly it depends on the overall diet, however it's less the 'sausage roll not doing harm' and more the 'is it enough nutrition for a morning at school'? It's not really filling enough and quite stodgy?
Again, OP didn't suggest this was an every day thing anyway.

AcademicsAgain · 10/07/2024 17:39

OP you need to delete this thread and write a new one but substitute the food offering to a kale smoothie from an independent cafe. You then might get the answers you need to your question.

Nine is quite young still so I understand your initial caution.
