MY 12 year old used my fabric scissors to open a bag of popcorn. Is there any point keeping them?

Or shall I just drop them off at the bus station with a tenner and tell them they need to make their own way in life from this point on?

My MOTHER who literally taught me to sew - has an unnerving habit of constantly attempting to use my fabric and embroidery scissors for household tasks. A fully grown adult.

My DH used mine to cut a tarpaulin. Do I have to get rid of him too?

I’m so sorry, but yes, you must get rid immediately. For the Greater Good ™️

I teach a bit of textiles. I am forever shouting across the room "NOT FOR PAPER!". They're all completely blunt now. Drives me mad. Also, never leave a big bit of fabric out in a room with any teenagers in. They will cut out something small right from the middle and have no idea why that wasn't a good idea.

FOJN · 08/07/2024 10:45

I'm another who thinks a tenner is generous and you're being a bit soft.

My strategy for protecting my dress making shears was to litter the house with other scissors and keep my shears hidden. If you found the shears before another pair of scissors then you had to be hunting for them.

Notthatcatagain they are very special. I'm now toying with the idea of treating myself to the 8.25 inch dress making shears. I've looked at them before and was put off by the price tag but they don't seem to have gone up in price as much as everything else so £94 now seems quite reasonable. I think they might actually have gone down in price.

Hence 'ex', I suppose.

😂😂This really is the thread that keeps on giving

My mum had strict rules about fabric scissors. As a child my favourite act of rebellion was to use them to cut paper, and in one case, Barbie's hair. She never noticed. Have you tried them out to see if it's made a difference?

Dying here picturing that 😂

Not a remotely sensitive image!

Nice jug!

Yes. It sends a message and sets an example.

On the plus side, you can use the tarpaulin to assist you in getting rid. Using the equipment you have available to you is practically recycling. Pat yourself on the back for being so ecologically aware.

ScienceDragon · 08/07/2024 12:18

My older son once cut all my measuring tapes into inch long segments (cutting on the lines). To be fair though, he was only 3 1/2, and he DIDN'T use my fabric scissors. However, as a teenager, he used to use dressmaking pins to pop pimples.

You teach them not to do one thing, and they just find something else to do to your stuff, that you never dreamed would be an actual thing to worry about!

goneaway2 · 08/07/2024 12:18

Ha! You should see the price of good dog grooming scissors.

LTB! The only thing he gets in the divorce are the thread snipping scissors. After he replaces them, of course.

Not a seamstress but after we had replaced a window in the living room and added a very, very nice window sill, we must have gotten talented termites that just "ate" my DDs initials into the sill. It was only 38 years ago, but I am hoping to forgive soon.

When we were in our first house, we painstakingly removed about 8 layers of paint from the windowsill, to reveal my initial and DH’s burnt into the wood. No explanation for that one.

BruceAndNosh · 08/07/2024 15:04

My mate's DH used her very expensive sewing machine to mend the strap on his leather tool belt and buggered the tension and god knows what else

SoupDragon · 08/07/2024 15:22

Off the back of this thread, I've just used DS1's knife sharpener to sharpen the fabric scissors which were ruined by him and his siblings years ago. It seemed the right thing to do.

I do have new fabric scissors which they know never to touch.

The question is why haven't you already?

Waitingfordoggo · 08/07/2024 15:40

I thought you were proposing to drop the scissors at the bus stop and I felt a bit sorry for them as they have presumably never been on a bus on their own before.

I don’t do fabricy things, but I am precious about my kitchen scissors which are frequently stolen and used for goodness knows what. I’ve got six pairs now but there are usually only two or three in the kitchen at any one time.

I’d make it £20. Richard Branson got £10 from his dad 60 years to make his own way home. It would be fair to reflect inflation a bit.

I must've bought half a dozen triple-pair packs of cheap scissors from Wilko (RIP) so that there was always a pair to hand. That's 18 pairs; I can only find 4 now. Where do they all go?

I expect my husband has them. He has all mine.

Touchthetrigpoint · 08/07/2024 16:02

They'll be buried in the compost heap along with various teaspoons and secateurs. I found a huge pair of loppers at the bottom of ours. They'd been missing for 5 years.

Compash · 07/07/2024 22:03

Perhaps they'll run into my DH there (who put my good knives in the dishwasher and used my Tweezerman tweezers to do some petty DIY)...

WHY do they do this??? I've lost 3 pairs of Tweezermen to diy or mending glasses!

Am I the only one to at doesn't understand the problem?!

You’re not alone, I don’t get the point in OP worrying too. I use one scissors for all things non-food, this includes fabrics, paper and perhaps popcorn if I need to.
Life’s too short to worry about something that’s not the end of the world.
Your precious scissors will be just fine and fit for purpose. This sound like a myth passed down from one generation to another.

Wheredidileavemycarkeys · 08/07/2024 17:24

What are fabric scissors? Everyone’s got a fabric scissors story to tell and I don’t even know what they are 🤣
