MY 12 year old used my fabric scissors to open a bag of popcorn. Is there any point keeping them?

Or shall I just drop them off at the bus station with a tenner and tell them they need to make their own way in life from this point on?

Even as a school girl I was precious about my sewing scissors. Imagine my horror when I found my AUNTIE cutting the rind off bacon with them.

Poolstream · 08/07/2024 05:11

I’m left handed so my family know not to use any of my scissors but especially my fabric scissors.
I have two pairs just in case though. The more expensive ones are well hidden.

Can anyone recommend good quality, very sharp embroidery scissors please.

KeirSpoutsTwaddle · 08/07/2024 06:44

What's frustrating- genuinely- are people ignoring what you say because they don't understand. There are a few on here.

If someone says their sewing scissors are special and not to be touched, why would you ignore that? Why argue that the fabric people must be wrong and it won't do them any harm? Why not just believe the people who know?

<Chunter grumble>

Growing up we weren't allowed to use anything because there was never enough of anything- sellotape, scissors, blue tack- all had to be asked for.

Now I have bought multiple scissor packs from Ikea so there are always scissors. Except that DH always gets them from the kitchen drawer and puts them back somewhere else so again- no scissors. Drives me potty.

I raised my sons to know that tools have a purpose and should be used for that purpose. Sadly I didn't raise DH and he still grabs whatever is to hand.

Think I need to go to therapy again, this has raised old trauma 🤣😁

Coats brand (most haberdashery shops stock them) sell little heron-shaped embroidery scissors. Very sharp.

I got new fabric scissors at the weekend because my dh is the pain. I showed them to him and told him not to use them on paper, or better still at all, as they are FABRIC scissors. He said paper is a fabric. 😡

Pottedpalm · 08/07/2024 06:59

’D’H used mine to cut sandpaper. Yes, sandpaper. 😥

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 08/07/2024 07:32

Caught DH once about to use the dressmaking shears for something other!!! Threatened him with using his very expensive woodworking chisels to open cans with. Message received.

Tell him that, by that logic, so is skin. So unless he wants to find himself in a big hole, putting lotion in the basket a la Silence of the Lambs, he’ll leave your scissors alone.

D’H used mine to cut sandpaper. Yes, sandpaper Following on from the film theme, I believe Kathy Bates in Misery may give you a few ideas.

Was that last paragraph sarcasm
I’m beginning to doubt myself in everything now
Not sarcasm. But she’s underplayed it a bit. They’re more precious than that.

Is it the scissors that are Japanese or the embroidery? 🤔

The scissors. They cost far more than my best fabric shears. They along with my plated needles, trestles and slate frames are my essential tools. (Paid commissions for my hand needlework)

My grandmother had a far better approach - she simply hid anything and everything I ever showed an interest in. Sure, she had stuff "for show" and to pacify me, but really only she knew where she kept the things she actually used.

Alas, two additional issues. I need daily access to my tools as this is what I get paid to do. Secondly DS has ASD and a love of repairing electronics and will use whatever he spots that could do the job. Yes I did make him save up and replace my fabric scissors but he will never be bombproof in remembering not to use my preciouses.

Not a remotely sensitive image!

My kid once used my rotary fabric cutter in place of a pizza cutter…😭

Rude AND dangerous, what an excellent combination.

newtb · 08/07/2024 08:56

Xh broke my left-handed sewing scissors by using them right-handedly. Hé used so much force he forced the rivet apart.
I knew there's a reason why he's an ex.

SiobhanSharpe · 08/07/2024 00:23

To have them near at hand for when he starts snoring?

😂 No!

LuluBlakey1 · 08/07/2024 09:05

JurassicClark · 08/07/2024 00:25

Exactly! You need a cleaver or secateurs for that

😂

I caught my DH doing his toenails with my embroidery scissors.

Reader I divorced him.

How disgusting! He deserved it.

That's more or less what I was going to say!😉

Rockschooldropout · 08/07/2024 09:17

Absolutely not ! As a crafter I feel your pain .. I hope you are ok .. you must be traumatised!

Id suggest not even a tenner .. pack a suitcase with a guide to local b and bs and wish them luck 🤣🤣

MrHarleyQuin · 08/07/2024 09:19

My MIL bought me some lovely fabric scissors when I started a sewing course.

Once I left them out and they disappeared - it turned out my dad thought they were the kitchen scissors he bought and he used them for all sorts of kitcheny things.

I think the moral of the story is to keep your fabric scissors stored well away from any other kind of scissors.

BobbyBiscuits · 08/07/2024 09:20

My DH threw my fiskars fabric scissors in the BIN?! Allegedly by accident...how the fuck can you put a massive pair of brand new looking sharp ass expensive scissors in a bin? I'm now seething again about that...tell him to buy you new ones!

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 08/07/2024 09:38

I have a little pair from William Whitely (along with their entire Wilkinson Glide range, which are great for my knackered old hands). I rarely pick up a seam ripper as their points are so good.

5128gap · 08/07/2024 09:41

My mum had strict rules about fabric scissors. As a child my favourite act of rebellion was to use them to cut paper, and in one case, Barbie's hair. She never noticed. Have you tried them out to see if it's made a difference?
