MY 12 year old used my fabric scissors to open a bag of popcorn. Is there any point keeping them?

Or shall I just drop them off at the bus station with a tenner and tell them they need to make their own way in life from this point on?

@Bluebirdover you think I went to the trouble of sorting adoption after that?!

You just turfed them out? I admire you 👏

But some parents are soft and would do the adoption thing.

My grandma had a set of decoy pinking shears. I’m one of 12 grandchildren, those decoys got some serious welly over the years.

I remember the joy of using pinking shears......utter amazement!

The problem is it makes them too blunt to cut fabric smoothly without snagging.

After cutting one bag of popcorn though?

Bluebirdover · 08/07/2024 00:49

@Hb7x3 it starts with a bag of popcorn and next it will be pebbles from the beach....

GogAndMagog · 08/07/2024 00:58

This is why I hide mine. Last pair got glued together. Royally pissed off.

Hide your precious haberdashery!

Am I the only one to at doesn't understand the problem?!

Scissors used for fabric need to be razor sharp.
Cardboard and paper ruins the cutting edge.

Sharp scissors that cut sweetly as you cut ribbon into points to make rosettes are a joy.
Blunt scissors gnaw at fabric and are no good.

Somethings have a single purpose and no other. If they are used for other things or by other people then they do not work as they were designed.

Fabric scissors are one of there things, along with fountain pens and old mechanical typewriters.

It's like taking a ferrari to a demolition derby. But much more serious.

I think we’re in the minority with 68% currently agreeing OP is not being unreasonable.
I’m confused.
But then despite making a lot of my own clothes and the kids when they were small I’ve never had any speciality scissors 😟. I feel deprived.

Was that last paragraph sarcasm
I’m beginning to doubt myself in everything now

Lovely thread. Have you seen the episode of The Repair Shop where they restore someone’s mum’s dressmaking scissors? It is really moving, they are really old and worn, the paint on the handles worn away where her mums fingers and thumb rubbed it off. They have a specialist scissor repairer who takes them apart and restores them so lovingly.

Thedayb4youcame · 08/07/2024 01:35

Ah, The Repair Shop. I know someone who has something she'd love to take on that program, but alas while the item is every bit suitable, she has no heartrending back story to go with it.

Thank you all for the hint on how to sharpen pinking shears by cutting aluminium foil. I inherited Mum's, which are a bit blunt. To be fair, I mostly remember her using them to cut up old Christmas cards to make labels for presents. I was therefore delighted to find a craft shop selling a range of scissors with serrated edges of various patterns. I'm guessing cutting foil will work on these, too.

I have had my own fabric scissors since about age 12. They are currently sat downstairs on the sewing pile. But I do not share the house with anyone else, so there is no risk. Also, they are currently under the Waitrose weekend paper, whereas the kitchen scissors and paper scissors are more prominent.

BettyBardMacDonald · 08/07/2024 01:38

Cut them from the will!

The joy of making Christmas cards into labels, pinking shears, hole punch, glue, glitter and a bit of ribbon 🎀!

Great memories.

Cut them from the will!

But don't use the scissors to cut them!

I bought some very expensive fiskars thread snipping scissors, my husband used them to trim his beard! Grounds for divorce!

LTB! The only thing he gets in the divorce are the thread snipping scissors. After he replaces them, of course.

Not a seamstress but after we had replaced a window in the living room and added a very, very nice window sill, we must have gotten talented termites that just "ate" my DDs initials into the sill. It was only 38 years ago, but I am hoping to forgive soon.

My ex partner did a bit of plastering with my silver cake slice.

This kind of behaviour is the reason my new fabric scissors have a small padlock on to secure the handles together.
It was the only way I could stop my DH and son using them to cut wires!

It could have been worse….they might have used my Japanese embroidery scissors.

Is it the scissors that are Japanese or the embroidery? 🤔

My DH used my slate kitchen trivet to do soldering on today.

He's 38.

He may be 38 but is he still breathing or now a lump under the patio?

My kid once used my rotary fabric cutter in place of a pizza cutter…😭

So funny! I could imagine a child making that mistake! Just trying to think of an appropriate punishment!

Ladyzfactor · 08/07/2024 04:27

Give the kids the dull fabric scissors at least for defense.
