MY 12 year old used my fabric scissors to open a bag of popcorn. Is there any point keeping them?

Or shall I just drop them off at the bus station with a tenner and tell them they need to make their own way in life from this point on?

To the uninitiated, like me, fabric scissors sound about as useful a chocolate teapot. I had no idea they were a thing.

On the contrary, they are extremely useful for cutting fabric 🙄

Anyone who constructs anything made with fabric (clothes, curtains, upholstery, artwork etc - so a lot of people) needs to use them, and they have to cut cleanly and glide smoothly to make a nice, precise, unfrayed edge.

Such a silly thing to say, even if you are one of the 'uninitiated'. I don't know the first thing about tree surgery but I can grasp that you need the right tools for the job.

In other news, butter knives aren't made of butter and steak knives aren't made of steak. Dessert forks are, sadly, not made of dessert either.

I did once give my grandmother some sugar spoons. Literally, spoons made of sugar. She was delighted to serve her great grandchild ice cream he could eat with the spoon and then eat the spoon.

Heartfelt apologies to all those discombobulated by my unfortunate sense of humour.

This thread has brought me back to my granny, cutting fabric with the shiniest fabric sissors, I thought they were made of silver. The sound of the sissors cutting through the paper and fabric, the blades rubbing together then into the fabric, so crisp. I so loved watching her 😀

That's the most first world problem topic I've ever seen 😍

Popadomorbread · 09/07/2024 17:53

definitely get rid of the child. Fabric scissors are sacred!

HeidInTheBaw · 09/07/2024 18:17

Kitchen foil will sharpen them x

Just how blunt are the scissors going to be after slicing through smooth plastic? Surely cutting through fabric will prove more resistant?
no idea though really; dd2 is a keen dressmaker and has fabric scissors and all kinds of specific tools, she buys them all herself with her wages - are fabric scissors horribly expensive? Cant they be sharpened?
I once used dhs “precision tile cutters” to remove a nail from a door - they were the tool closest to me that did the job 🤷‍♀️
Ds uses my olaplex when he showers -
it’s all just ‘stuff’ isn’t it?!

yes, it is all just ‘stuff’

but some ‘stuff’ is more importanter than other ‘stuff’
fabric shears being one 😘

When I was very small, I once took my mum’s fabric scissors and cut out (what I thought was very neatly.) all of her sewing patterns.

She wasn’t a happy lady!

You sounded like a very helpful child!

Perhaps they'll run into my DH there (who put my good knives in the dishwasher and used my Tweezerman tweezers to do some petty DIY)...

LTB 😂😂😂😂😂

flotsomandjetsome · 09/07/2024 19:21

Ha ha, we always joked that the FBI would be called if anyone used my DMs fabric scissors on anything other than fabric when we were kids 🤣

Oooohhhh 😶 Sorry you're right, I didn't get that pun at all.

JustMeAndTheFish · 09/07/2024 19:45

I mean I just used mine for trimming my car’s fur. Bought them years ago from Ikea and they’re still as good as ever 🤣

That has now totally depressed me! I want a "true", literal, desert fork now.

Well, first the "steak" knife. Done medium please!

KatyMac · 09/07/2024 19:54

My people!!
Help me please

I need a short narrow scissor 2-3 inch blade but with a proper handle not 2 little circles like the stork ones

MarvellousMonsters · 09/07/2024 20:21

No. Don't keep them. That child is lost.

Can you get the scissors sharpened?

My dh bought me a pair of expensive fabric scissors and a couple of months later used them to clip the wings of our chickens.

Oh dear lord.... Confused

My mum had strict rules about fabric scissors. As a child my favourite act of rebellion was to use them to cut paper, and in one case, Barbie's hair. She never noticed. Have you tried them out to see if it's made a difference?

They were obviously decoy scissors

I’m ashamed to admit that it took me a couple of hours! And now @SoupDragon’s post makes so much more sense 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just goes to show that wanton vandalism of fabric scissors isn’t a laughing matter 😁

My DD used my Tweezerman tweezers to squeeze her spots. When she goes back to Uni I'm moving and not leaving a forwarding address...

I'm amazed she didn't lacerate her face. Those things are sharp and I'm always making myself bleed with them.

My DH used my slate kitchen trivet to do soldering on today.

He's 38.

Seems like a good idea to me ...
