MY 12 year old used my fabric scissors to open a bag of popcorn. Is there any point keeping them?

Or shall I just drop them off at the bus station with a tenner and tell them they need to make their own way in life from this point on?

Mine used my tweezers to pick up and inspect his woodlouse collection.

I didn't know up until that point that he had a woodlouse collection in his bedroom.

Am I the only one to at doesn't understand the problem?!

It's news to me too, off to Google it!

That's so funny.

DS10 used my fabric scissors last week (which I keep ontop of my wardrobe) to cut paper.

He was very apologetic and hadn't realised.

Still not sure how he knew about my secret fabric scissor hideaway.

LauderSyme · 07/07/2024 22:15

The problem is it makes them too blunt to cut fabric smoothly without snagging.

Sharkknife · 07/07/2024 22:17

My partner insists on using the kitchen scissors to do the garden pruning despite me investing in specific and far superior garden tools, I feel your pain.

Animalfromthemuppets22 · 07/07/2024 22:18

My dh bought me a pair of expensive fabric scissors and a couple of months later used them to clip the wings of our chickens.

Mine are hidden when we have guests, my family (who live here) wouldn’t dream of touching them. (I did buy them all a decent pair of scissors a while ago, most of them have lost them now).

I do have a scissor sharpener just for my fabric scissors and I sharpen my pinking scissors by cutting several layers of tin foil.

Fabric scissors are usually very sharp and need to be very clean.

Cutting paper or cardboard can actually blunt a sharp blade.

So if you have fabric scissors then it's reasonable that you would want them kept pristine and not used for popcorn, bacon etc.

My DH used the cut glass crystal water jug I inherited from my grandmother to fill up the screenwash in his car. It was handy apparently. I had to have words.

Flossflower · 07/07/2024 22:22

My fabric shears are hidden away and just in case my husband should find them have a large label attached to them to say that they are not to be used for anything else.

OldTinHat · 07/07/2024 22:22

This has made me laugh!!!

I used my brand new fancy crafting scissors to open a bag of gravel this week. I can't even blame anyone.

I shall join your DC at the bus station, OP.

BigButtons · 07/07/2024 22:22

All mine know never to use my fabric scissors for anything else but fabrics

Lemonade2011 · 07/07/2024 22:22

Ooh not so good. My grandma made patchwork quilts and woe betide if you touched her scissors, I didn’t really understand as a kid but we never touched them, I now have 4 beautiful handmade quilts she left me when she died - one she made me when I went away to uni so priceless she was very talented my mum has the most beautiful one but she keeps in a box never to be seen, so sad it should be on show

Keep the scissors out of reach...

There she is. Try and smile, I promise it doesn’t hurt.

Anniegetyourgun · 07/07/2024 22:23

DS2 once (when he was very small) used XH's wood saw to cut a brick. XH had been wondering why the saw seemed so blunt...

We kept the child, and some 30+ years later we're glad we did (he announced his engagement to my prospective third DIL yesterday). If he'd done it when he was 12, though, the story might have had a different ending. I wouldn't want to influence your decision either way.

Shows the world is divided into devoted parents and people who love sewing

Hewlet · 07/07/2024 22:23

Which do you want to get rid of ?
The child or the scissors ?

That's the joke.

Oldernotwiser44 · 07/07/2024 22:23

I accidentally cut through some fabric with a pin in it with my fabric scissors 😱

You really have to be a sewist!

ThePenguinIsDrunk · 07/07/2024 22:25

Bus stop, I think a fiver would be overly generous.

WitchDancer · 07/07/2024 22:25

We had a visitor reach for my sewing scissors once. Cue my husband and two children shouting NO at them. I've trained them well Grin

OMG 😮 What didn’t he get about good fabric scissors being a) expensive and b) called FABRIC SCISSORS?

My DH used my slate kitchen trivet to do soldering on today.

He's 38.

But won’t make 39 if he carries on ….
