@TwigletsAndRadishes completely agree with you, I was so shocked to see the consensus on this thread that this is a good result for France. As far as I can see it’s a view confined to Mumsnet.

It’s amazing how all people seem to care about is the “far right” being defeated.

Yes, amazing that foreigners in France don't want to be excluded from many jobs and from claiming any benefits, while simultaneously being blamed for all the country's ills. I think a pp is right and we must all be anti-somatics like Melonchellon.

MrsSkylerWhite · 08/07/2024 10:31

Macron got it right.

It appears that many do not know that it is a company.

I do know it's a company actually and I thought that as I pressed post but couldn't be bothered to edit it because for the purposes of the discussion it's pretty irrelevant.

DeerOhDear · 08/07/2024 10:32

@Anonym00se momentum flourished under corybn and all sorts of nasty nasty stuff sprang up including putting bricks through fellow Labour mps windows.

Personally I'm the middle I like some policies from both side but I'm middle ground.
I fear any extremists left and right.
Equally and I wouldn't be cheering in France right now at all.

GrinAndBeerIt · 08/07/2024 10:32

Let the riots commence.....oh!

1dayatatime · 08/07/2024 10:34

@DTisawazzock

Sorry you can't say that on MN.

In the eyes of many posters on here that makes you a far right racist and a fascist.

I have a way of identifying a left wing person from a right wing person... Years ago I worked with an 18 year old Pakistani origin lad who went to Pakistan, married his 14 year old cousin and brought her back to the UK. Long story short she wasn't allowed outside his flat alone and (according to him) had no need to learn English as when she did go out he would do the speaking.
Anyway some of us in the office weren't comfortable with this as it seemed like child/sex trafficing. But there was a very clear split: The left leaning types said it was racist to not accept this was their culture and to mention it as being an issue and generally tried to side track. The right leaning types said it was unacceptable and shouldn't be allowed.
Since that time I have not been surprised people in countries where such cultures are growing have become right leaning, their moral compass has been pushed just too far.

So you based your beliefs on one example? I am " a left leaning type" ,as you eloquently put it, and I do not find this acceptable.
Can you name, please, the countries with "such cultures"?

Rioting is the national pastime regardless of which party governs, although it's generally confined to the odd city centre or dodgy housing estate. At least we have avoided (for now) the Kristallnacht situation that many of us feared following an RN victory.

That said, if it's France v England on Bastille Day, I'm probably staying home.

Teddleshon · 08/07/2024 10:39

@TwigletsAndRadishes I meant the reaction of the lefties would have been very different! Or are you saying that’s it’s an admirable feature of the left that theyre always happy to stand by and see women being oppressed and have their rights taken away whoever the oppressor is.

Agreed. Ultimately, for the foreseeable, France seems ungovernable. Which is no cause for celebration by any logic!

Oh, I see. Sorry, I thought you were saying that the right wingers would make an exception for white Christians. Yes I agree with you, the left wing 'progressives' would be much more judgemental of white Christians.

BeenThere0 · 08/07/2024 10:49

Anyone knows the proper the translation into French of the term "hung parliament"? (It's not 'parlement suspendu' by the way..)

That’s utter rubbish. I’m on the left and I don’t think it’s racist to save children from trafficking. Nor would the vast majority of the left. The difference is that your colleagues were probably scared of getting into trouble, regardless of their political beliefs. Just like the social workers in Rochdale.

  1. I vote for a candidate in the first round because I like her and her policies.
  2. She is in second place after the first round, the top three going forward.
  3. As part of a national deal, she drops out of the second round.

Why would I ever waste my vote on this person again?. She clearly doesn't respect my vote - maybe for the greater good - but I would prefer to vote for someone who is consistent.
I expect Bardella and Le Pen to be quiet while the other two groups (who have little in common) squabble for a year until the next election.

It is simple really. In France, voters come together for the greater good. It isn't about what the individual wants. I am glad that it isn't.
I suggest you read "The social contract" by Rousseau.

I vividly remember a Labour MP on Question Time many years ago refusing to condemn the fatwah against Salman Rushdie.

He was far from alone in the Labour Party of the day.

And they were condemned by Corbyn, who is a pacifist. People hated him because he said he’d never push the nuclear button. He is anti-violence, a vegetarian, and anti-war. Momentum was mostly made up of older ‘peace and love’ hippy types, but was hijacked by communist agitators. That isn’t democratic socialism that the majority of us who consider ourselves leftists adhere to.

Why are you being so belligerent? I haven't been rude to you, nor to the 'bollocks' PP. I'm only highlighting the fact that history would suggest Labour's term will be short lived.

Isn't it interesting that posters who consider themselves terribly liberal are also the most hostile and intolerant of an alternative view?

How’s the comment asking if you have a Crystal Ball in any way rude, it isn’t, it is pointing out the obvious that you don’t know that at all!

BIossomtoes · 08/07/2024 11:33

Actually I guess my comment was a bit rude. Sorry @SloaneStreetVandal. At my age I ought to know better.

I'll never be tolerant and always be intolerant to white nationlist racists like Le Pen and Reform , just as a I am to Muslim extremists.

Sorry.

Your inaccuracies on history and British politics are just intellectually painful, sorry if I am outlining the truth, I suppose some people find the truth offensive!

Norwich234 · 08/07/2024 11:44

Great news but just as with the 'Reform' party, we need to look at why people vote for them, much as I hate these far right parties. It'll appeal largely to those who don't feel they have much stake in society, 'zero hour' contracts, inability to get mortgage etc. My belief is that their needs will be more served by the moderate left parties but these parties have to demonstrate this. it's much easier for people to point to the immigrant as the source of their problems, something which has gone on for time immemorial. I don't like the far left either which can involve anti Jewish sentiments but they're generally not as hateful, ugly or racist as the far right.
