Sounds like the right derangement syndrome.

Give it 5 years and see how those stalinists (many of them self-proclaimed) drag France further into the gutter.

They already showed what they are capable of during their recent riots, obviously not reported by the MSM.

I think you need to meet people outside your bubble. My parents are racist but i would never hate them. I have been subject to alot of racism growing up. The world is not black and white and any kind of idealist, morally superior mentality is dangerous. That's how the Nazis started.

The Nazis started with racist people like your parents. It is morally wrong to tolerate people like that.

I get that it's more complicated if your parents hold views like this. I'm not asking you to disown them, but surely you don't expect others to tolerate their horrible views?

I for one am not going to apologise for hating racists and fascists. I think that should be the response of any decent person.

The French far left are one of the most fascistic people in the world of politics today. Just wait and see although I suspect not much will be reported in the MSM.

rainymcrainrain · 07/07/2024 20:02

I'm asking for understanding before foaming at the mouth/pitch forks etc. Obviously there's alot of unhappy people right now. I think it's more to do with the economic climate. Put 2 spiders together in the same box and they'll kill each other to survive.

It's a broad left alliance, with Macron's party very close behind in second.

Why are people trying to suggest that the hard left will be running the show?

DH and I were literally just having this conversation.

I bet if we'd had such a system, we'd never have had Brexit.

I completely agree. My grandparents were breathtakingly racist. My DM is a Reform voter. I went to university in Brighton, met people from
everywhere and every gender/sexuality. If you can mix with people of different backgrounds/orientations and hate them, there’s something very wrong with you.

Amazing how people who think they are progressive and tolerant are just as hateful and intolerant as the people they hate

This, 110%.

France has always had a far right following.

Sorry for the derail. To explain, just because you're an ethnic minority doesn't mean you can't be v racist. In other words they're normal people too! Grin

Rainbowsponge · 07/07/2024 20:07

I also dislike this moral superiority over other people’s countries and feeling entitled to a say in their democratic processes. Why aren’t you starting threads about the South African election? Is it just Western countries capable of bad electoral decisions in your eyes or are non-Western countries held to the same scrutiny?

Icanttakethisanymore · 07/07/2024 20:07

Did the people of France tell them to ‘fuck off’ or did the left just out-manoeuvre them? If one of the centre / left wing candidates hadn’t stood down in most seats they’d have got elected, would they? I’m no fan of the RN btw, I’m centre left

Gingernaut · 07/07/2024 20:08

The result is a triumph of compromise

Many candidates withdrew so as not to split votes and people held their noses and voted for parties they didn't support.

The hard right will be deeply unhappy at being shafted

HebburnPokemon · 07/07/2024 20:09

There's always a core of the population who have far right views. I think about 25% to 30%.

How do you know this? I’ve done some research and can’t find anything suggesting that.

LordPercyPercy · 07/07/2024 20:10

I suspect the maneuvering and the standing down of so many candidates is going to leave the right-wing voters feeling very frustrated and fuel their discontent. This wasn't some glorious victory and there will be more trouble ahead.

I think this too. It’s further forcing the pressure cooker closed.

People of all colours can be racist.

DeerOhDear · 07/07/2024 20:12

I can't understand why anyone would be happy that the hard left is potentially in power.
Surely everyone is now aware there isn't much in the hard left and hard right.

There's always a core of the population who have far right views. I think about 25% to 30%. So all countries need to find voting systems to manage that as it's a human trait for some making it impossible to irradicate.

Completely agree.
Haven't seen the percentages for the second round, but for the first one it was 1 in 5 who voted for the National Rally.
I'm glad the majority managed to come together and express that it didn't want. Most people in the UK did not vote for Brexit, and didn't vote for Johnson in 2019... At least on this occasion in France, the majority got its way.
You're welcome

Well, one country is our immediate neighbor, one is the other side of the world.

Secondly, while I know the ANC's support dropped, they remain the governing party in SA so from an international perspective I'm not sure that the SA elections were particularly noteworthy?

You’d hope there’s enough evidence in the world - Russia, N. Korea to name just a couple - to indicate that extremes are generally bad.

Two cheeks of the same arse if you ask me.

But I’m biased: some of my family were sentenced to die in Auschwitz and some were tortured to death in communist prisons not long after the WW2 ended.
