To be so happy at so many women in the cabinet

Standupcitizen · 06/07/2024 19:16

Anyone else absolutely thrilled to see women represented equally in the cabinet for the first time ever?

22 appointments. 11 women, 11 men. It seems completely deliberate. Previously the highest % of females in the cabinet was something like 38%. First female chancellor in history as well.

I feel elated that for the first time in my life, we have equality of the sexes in government.

Whatever you think of starmer, the labour party or of the women in question, this is absolutely huge to me, i feel ridiculously emotional about it. I think as a woman who has been dismissed, talked over, belittled, discriminated against and overlooked for promotion in favour of men in the workplace - if the government can do it, then other companies have no excuse.

Saying something so stupid and scientifically illiterate doesn't exactly give confidence in this hidden competence.

Liz Truss was roundly dunked on as Foreign Secretary for saying something stupid about cheese and even that wasn't as stupid as Lammy thinking men can grow a cervix.

I'm still not interested in a remark he made that annoyed the GC women and I don't regard it as relevant to his competence as Foreign Secretary. He's already been putting in hard work to prepare for the role.

cardibach · 06/07/2024 22:08

@NoSnowdrop its Keir. It’s not difficult.

Prime Ministers who happen to be female (that’s without penises, Keir & your ideologically captured cabinet of MPs who lack the ability to critically think for themselves) aren’t elected to office to do anything specifically for their sex. They’re supposedly there to govern the country.

Margaret Thatcher abhorred box ticking exercises and so hardly would’ve been the PM to hire women (the ones without penises!) for the optics. (Hello Kier!)

Especially when she had managed to break into the higher echelons of the Tory party at a time when many of her own party looked down on her for being lower or middle class.

It is SO disappointing when a woman (i presume) assumes other women have been hired for the "optics".

Nobody ever says it about white men.

Exactly, so why discriminate against the son of a local scrap metal merchant who went to private school cost his parents could afford it?

Won’t somebody pleeeease think of the (privately educated) children!!

She could have hired women for their talents not as a box ticking exercise though. Not even one in all that time.

They could have 22 feminists in but imo they’re still going to take away all the countryside, borrow more than they can afford, pass ULEZ, means-test our pension, over tax people & chuck millions at a terribly run NHS.

Thank you for that in depth analysis of the Labour manifesto.

His competence isn't hidden. It's evident in his qualifications, experience and achievements.

Liz Truss (probably the most incompetent PM in memory) put Therese Coffey in her cabinet, as did Rishi Sunak at one point . I can't think of anyone in Starmer's cabinet, male or female, who's likely to be as incompetent as she was.

cardibach · 06/07/2024 22:08

@NoSnowdrop its Keir. It’s not difficult.

Neither is the answer to the simple question. “What is a woman?” but there you go… feel free to pick up on one typo in my post. It wasn’t a deliberate misspelling.

To the OP unfortunately there are many men (hello Keir! - waves to cardibach!) who suddenly know what a women is when it suits their means.

Did it come with pictures to illustrate the effects of each policy?

I thought it would be May…Brexit red lines make her a lasting damager for me - even though she didn’t finish the job, she limited the options.

Are you bashing the 3 female PMs because they were Tory? So it's OK to bash women on MN as long as they're Tories?

Churchview · 06/07/2024 22:16

Here for the pictures of taking away all the countryside.

Scammersarescum · 06/07/2024 22:17

It's a token gesture to try and buy back women's votes. They've damaged many women's confidence with their misogynistic views on what a woman is.

They'd be horrified by the idea of anyone blacking up. Because as you know, the Left always considers themselves morally superior. However they are more than happy for any man to woman up, appropriate our identity and put us at risk.

When it comes down to it Srarmer does not have women's backs. You'd have to be naive to not see this as the cynical ploy it is.

And as for David Lammy's idiocy. Words fail me.

It could be an all female team but what would it matter when they refute biological reality and the implicit effects of patriarchy on biological women?

Labour are no friend to the female electorate.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 06/07/2024 22:18

Is it great tho? They’re just ticking the box - to please everyone - look at us, look how equal we are. I think the best person for the job should get the job, if that looks like an all women cabinet - great. All men. Great. Lisa Nandy, minister of sport the best choice?! Don’t be silly.

I give it about a year or less before he goes off message and says something stupid again that slips past his aides and speech writers. Then he'll be shuffled out.

I feel upbeat. At least we’ll get five years of stability now. I don’t agree with much of what labour are up to but I do believe Starmer will improve the mood in the country and hopefully bring people together. Great to see women in the cabinet.

I think Liz Truss was utterly incompetent. Her sex had nothing to do with that.

I’m on the fence about May but it could be a full house.

Windrush and UC to start with. I'm sure I can come up with a lot more. Oh yes she wanted to bring in self ID.

I don’t care what sex they were. Those 3 PMs damaged the U.K.

I think Starmer appointed the best people for the job regardless of sex. Since the majority of them have been shadowing the roles for ages I doubt if he's based his decision on buying women's votes back.

It’s a very well planned token gesture - they’ve all been in shadow roles for months (years in many cases). Or maybe….you're wrong and he doesn’t hate women at all.

InterestQ · 06/07/2024 22:28

David Lammy’s answers on Mastermind in the GK bit still make me cry with laughter.

  1. What was the married name of the scientists Marie and Pierre who won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903 for their research into radiation?

David Lammy; “Antoinette.”

  1. Which fortress was built in the 1370s to defend one of the gates of Paris, and was later used as a state prison by Cardinal Richelieu?

David Lammy; “Versailles.”

  1. Who succeeded to the English throne aged nine on the death of his father Henry VIII in 1547?

David Lammy; “Henry VII”.

I mean if anything shows a man can’t deal with pressure!
