To be so happy at so many women in the cabinet

Standupcitizen · 06/07/2024 19:16

Anyone else absolutely thrilled to see women represented equally in the cabinet for the first time ever?

22 appointments. 11 women, 11 men. It seems completely deliberate. Previously the highest % of females in the cabinet was something like 38%. First female chancellor in history as well.

I feel elated that for the first time in my life, we have equality of the sexes in government.

Whatever you think of starmer, the labour party or of the women in question, this is absolutely huge to me, i feel ridiculously emotional about it. I think as a woman who has been dismissed, talked over, belittled, discriminated against and overlooked for promotion in favour of men in the workplace - if the government can do it, then other companies have no excuse.

Is it great tho? They’re just ticking the box - to please everyone - look at us, look how equal we are. I think the best person for the job should get the job, if that looks like an all women cabinet - great. All men. Great. Lisa Nandy, minister of sport the best choice?! Don’t be silly.

Minister of culture. There’s more to it than sport.

Are you bashing the 3 female PMs because they were Tory? So it's OK to bash women on MN as long as they're Tories?

Have you seen the shit people are saying about Angela Raynor?

SharonEllis · 06/07/2024 22:31

Scammersarescum · 06/07/2024 22:17

It's a token gesture to try and buy back women's votes. They've damaged many women's confidence with their misogynistic views on what a woman is.

They'd be horrified by the idea of anyone blacking up. Because as you know, the Left always considers themselves morally superior. However they are more than happy for any man to woman up, appropriate our identity and put us at risk.

When it comes down to it Srarmer does not have women's backs. You'd have to be naive to not see this as the cynical ploy it is.

And as for David Lammy's idiocy. Words fail me.

It could be an all female team but what would it matter when they refute biological reality and the implicit effects of patriarchy on biological women?

Labour are no friend to the female electorate.

Im am a sex realist and furious with Starmer & the party over their handling of this issue, but its complete nonsense to suggest that the proportion of women in cabinet is a token gesture. Your argument makes no sense. If he doesnt care about women why does he feel the need to make a token gesture of putting so many women in cabinet? Rachel Reeves is clearly central to his project.

macaroniandcheeze · 06/07/2024 22:31

Ffs all the mumsnet bashing that Labour aren’t the party for women then they go and make 11 of them the most important women in the country and it’s still not bloody good enough. It’s been 2 days!

crockofshite · 06/07/2024 22:31

I couldn't care less if they're male/female/undecided/black/brown/pink

So long as they're competent, honest, inclusive, sober and listen to the electorate.

Why are you suggesting that people of the calibre of Reeves & Cooper are not up to the job? FFS. Nandy is minister for culture, media & sport - do you know how much those areas contribute to the UK economy & profile around the world?

How do you know they’re women?

Excellent question! 😂

Cinnabarmotheaten · 06/07/2024 22:47

Absolutely wonderful to see the cabinet with so many excellent women in positions to actually make a difference. At last. There’s always people wanting to tear others down, but just for a moment I’m allowing myself a sense of hope in this election result.

radiatorbed · 06/07/2024 22:49

Nandy is a very dodgy appointment. She is not intelligent at all and is hard left.

You have got to be kidding me. The far left consider her to be on the right. Do you know anything about the Labour Party?

Prime Ministers who happen to be female (that’s without penises, Keir & your ideologically captured cabinet of MPs who lack the ability to critically think for themselves) aren’t elected to office to do anything specifically for their sex. They’re supposedly there to govern the country.

Margaret Thatcher abhorred box ticking exercises and so hardly would’ve been the PM to hire women (the ones without penises!) for the optics. (Hello Kier!)

Especially when she had managed to break into the higher echelons of the Tory party at a time when many of her own party looked down on her for being lower or middle class.

She could have appointed women to the cabinet not for the optics but because they had intelligence and ability. Are you seriously trying to tell me there was only one intelligent, competent woman in the entire Tory party from 1979 to 1990?

Starmer’s female cabinet ministers are there because they’re high calibre, not for the optics.

Isn't it the most working-class cabinet we've ever had as well?

The least privately educated in history.

To be fair there was only a handful of Tory women in Parliament in Thatcher's time. She could have done more though.

Lammy is a terrible choice for one of the top offices of state - his skin colour is irrelevant to his intelligence/ ability, but probably guaranteed his appointment.

David Lamy has two degrees (he was the first black Briton at Harvard Law School), has worked in the law in both the UK and USA and has been in politics for over a quarter of a century both in power and in opposition.

Who else would be more qualified for his role?
Starmer has made some amazing appointments in his determination to achieve the aims he's set out for the country.
Why would anyone think he'd appoint someone incompetent just 'for optics'? The suggestion's ludicrous.

Agreed. I think it’s a pretty racist suggestion actually

Yes this is sensible; and I’m pleased to see so many women in positions of power. Let’s hope for good decisions next.

You can’t buy brains, let alone the best ones. Clearly you do get the drive to succeed and compete from a comprehensive education - those government jobs weren’t dropped in their laps by the fairies.

They have just entirely successfully competed against the Tories and thrashed them. I would say that the education is holding up pretty well.

Why does skin colour matter more than class? David ‘men can grow a cervix’ Lammy is a terrible choice for one of the top offices of state - his skin colour is irrelevant to his intelligence/ ability, but probably guaranteed his appointment.

I’m depressed at the sight of all those women in cabinet. Every last one of them has sold out her sex by embracing the deeply misogynist gender ideology. Something which affects the most vulnerable women in society far more than others.

Not one of those women have uttered a word of condemnation re the avalanche of rape and death threats Rosie Duffield continues to receive. Not one.

This. I’m pleased to see more women at the top but I can’t forget what these people have done to other women such a Rosie Duffield and women up and down the country who need single sex spaces or whose kids have been taken in by gender ideology.

Thie Labour cabinet is not feminist. We have a lot of work to do.

Well Labour's made a good start by winning the election with their substandard brains and despite having no drive to succeed. So they're not doing too bad!

Sadly it’s not uncommon for people to pretend that senior black politicians are uniquely stupid. Look at the abuse Diane Abbott has suffered over the years. She’s a Cambridge graduate yet how many times did we have to endure the ridiculous myth that she couldn’t even get her act together enough to wear a matching pair of shoes? Rooted in racism, like the allegation that Lammy’s a bit of a thicko who’ll be quietly ushered out of the cabinet once his usefulness as a symbol has passed its sell by date.
