AIBU that the BBC1 10 o'clock news shouldn't be delayed by 45 mins for (checks notes) Portugal vs France on the eve of a monumental election result and the day of a new government.

AIBU???

Not sure it’s Gary’s fault tbh, but I do agree.

Smithhy · 06/07/2024 08:23

Has there not been enough press and news coverage of the election already?

combinationpadlock · 06/07/2024 08:24

yabu. Football is deeply ingrained into the national culture, and to many people, far more important than politics. You might not like it, but you can't complain that we have a sport that so many people are so deeply involved with. Better than not having a sport so important in our culture - that would cause a very dangerous vacuum

OMGsamesame · 06/07/2024 08:24

How is it the eve of the election? The election happened on Thursday, the result was known yesterday.

heldinadream · 06/07/2024 08:25

I think scheduling the election during Wimbledon was a massive mistake. Is there football on too? Couldn't care less about that. 😂

bluecomputerscreen · 06/07/2024 08:26

and what about the tour de france!

Not sure it was the eve of the election either. I knew the results yesterday morning and had all day to read, watch and catch up on the news

The football was live and happening right then. What were they meant to do across the whole of Europe.

You do know other TV channels/media are available?

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/07/2024 08:27

And the Grand Prix...

soupfiend · 06/07/2024 08:28

I agree with you about the news but whats it got to do with Gary?

What other Garys can we blame

Kemp
Cooper
Oldman
Barlow (my money's on him)
Rhodes (RIP)

TheBizzies · 06/07/2024 08:29

Ah op it's been nothing but election allllllll day

Ponoka7 · 06/07/2024 08:29

You're 24 hours too late? They couldn't cut from football and not show the penalty shoot out. We are now going into the semi final stage. You can get the coverage via iplayer, ITVX etc.

France vs Portugal more important than a new PM? Okaaay...

soscarlet · 06/07/2024 08:37

If you don’t know the outcome of the election that’s on you, you can’t blame Gary Lineker for that.

Needmorelego · 06/07/2024 08:39

What exactly do you need to know?
Labour won. Starmer is PM.
Not much is happening yet.

Bjorkdidit · 06/07/2024 08:42

Surely the news is on the BBC News channel if you want to watch the news?

Janiie · 06/07/2024 08:46

It should just automatically go to bbc 2 at 10pm like other sporting stuff does.

As an aside I loathe football and the culture. All the shit pundits who didn't win anything major sneering at the team yet yayy they score and they're all heros. It is pathetic.

What did you want them to say that they hadn’t already? And I stayed up all night to watch the election coverage on Thursday and was in bed at nine so it’s not like I’m a politically disengaged football fan. It’s not a breaking news story. The Labour majority was known from the early hours. The new cabinet was appointed in the day. Nothing new had happened by 10:00, but new events were unfolding in the live football game.

And out of curiosity, why do you think Gary Linekar is responsible for BBC scheduling? Should I forward my complaint to him that the Masterchef final was cancelled after Prince Phillip died?

SonicTheHodgeheg · 06/07/2024 08:50

If the timing was important then why wouldn’t you watch another channel just this once?

France and Portugal are big footballing nations in the Quarter Finals of a competition that lots of people are interested in so the BBC probably had bigger viewing figures for football than if it had broadcast the news. I assume that the match went into extra time/penalties hence the news being delayed.

BeverlyMakka · 06/07/2024 08:50

YABU. Maybe find another channel to watch the election coverage on or have a read about it instead. It doesn’t need to be on bbc1/itv all day.

Chartreux · 06/07/2024 08:51

OP, I guess you could have caught up via the news on iPlayer. But, to be fair, irrespective of the election it was a lousy evening's TV yesterday on the main channels if you're not keen on sport. Depressingly, that's going to to continue for what feels like a looong time.

CrunchyCarrot · 06/07/2024 08:52

Why is it Gary's fault? The matches at this point of the competition can always go into extra time, you can still watch the news elsewhere.

ghostyslovesheets · 06/07/2024 08:53

Gosh it’s like 24 hr news channels don’t exist

wasn’t aware Gary was actually playing - causing it to go to extra time and penalties and also responsible for scheduling decisions

KrisAkabusi · 06/07/2024 08:54

It's not Gary (or the BBC's) fault that you're at least 24 hours behind the rest of the world.
