AIBU that the BBC1 10 o'clock news shouldn't be delayed by 45 mins for (checks notes) Portugal vs France on the eve of a monumental election result and the day of a new government.

AIBU???

@Frustrated76 I haven't watched the news for years. I just read it on my phone (various different news sites but mostly BBC) - the same phone I am currently reading Mumsnet on.
If you can access Mumsnet - you can access the news.
24/7 news coverage means the same thing gets repeated over and over or over analysed when it doesn't need to be over analysed.
Sometimes all you need is the facts. In this case the facts are Labour won and Starmer is PM.

FuzzyStripes · 06/07/2024 09:58

The Euros dates were announced first so it’s not their fault that the election clashed and given news is 24/7 these days and can be found via a number of different sources and ways, I don’t think that a news broadcast discussing information that was already known should be on in preference to a live sports game.

It’s also not Linekar’s fault but the BBC who will have made the decision.

Needmorelego · 06/07/2024 10:02

@Frustrated76 I don't think the 10 O'clock news is an "institution" anymore.
When 24/7 news began (1997 for BBC News 24 - so 27 years ago) the idea of watching news at a certain time started to fizzle away.
Even my 87 year old mother in law and 77 year old mum just read the news online and rarely watch a news channel or programme anymore
Get with the 21st Century 😂

There was if you'd been working all day and had missed it all.

But it was all easily available online and on the news channel is my point. Whereas the football was happening live, result unknown and not on as many channels because of the way the rights work.

Frustrated76 · 06/07/2024 08:35

France vs Portugal more important than a new PM? Okaaay...

Why didn't you watch the bbc news channel on 231?

bluecomputerscreen · 06/07/2024 10:08

‘Bloody Gary’ is what we call our arsehole neighbour. I thought this thread was about him.

mitogoshi · 06/07/2024 10:11

Knew the outcome and quite frankly the football was scheduled before the election. We watched itv news instead

ThreeTescoBags · 06/07/2024 10:13

Needmorelego · 06/07/2024 08:39

What exactly do you need to know?
Labour won. Starmer is PM.
Not much is happening yet.

Spoiler alert!!

(For those of us who just couldn't find any coverage of the election whatsoever what with there be the odd football match on)

The result of election was shown endlessly on BBC news, you could watch 24 hr coverage if you wanted
But how is the delay Gary Lineker, s fault?

bostonchamps · 06/07/2024 10:31

Whatineed · 06/07/2024 09:01

It's the fault of Ronaldo and Mbappe surely?

The Germany - Spain game went over time too, is Gary responsible for that too? 😂

Throw no shade on Kylian!

Thursday was the eve of the election results and France v Portugal was yesterday so I'm not sure what parallel universe you live in but the BBC news channel is the place to go in these situations. I hate the way sport seems to be prioritised over everything (don't get me started on the tennis - I hate tennis with a passion, with its egomaniacal players, but I can't do anything about it so 🤷🏻) but, if we want to know what's happening in the real world, we just switch over to BBC News.

Screamingabdabz · 06/07/2024 10:37

I wonder if the same would’ve happened if kicky ball was a predominately female preoccupation? No it wouldn’t.

I agree with you op. I’m baffled by the priority it’s given above all else.

crumblingschools · 06/07/2024 10:39

There were highlights of it on-line and other channels are available with news on

crumblingschools · 06/07/2024 10:40

@Screamingabdabz it happens with tennis so not just men’s football

SeriaMau · 06/07/2024 10:41

Email the BBC and see if you can get him sacked. What a bastard.

Moonshiners · 06/07/2024 10:44

Longma · 06/07/2024 09:03

If only that's where the near constant sport stayed - on the many sports channels.
Sport seems to be on most main channels at the moment.

But you have to pay for those channels. We can't afford Sky etc and love sport. We also love the news but there's loads of that about. In fact the OP could have just switched over to ITV to watch the news at ten there.

Frustrated76 · 06/07/2024 09:38

The BBC 10o'clock news is an institution, just like the football. It shouldn't be moved... especially on momentous day.

Well, it used to be on at 9pm, so not so much of an institution...

crumblingschools · 06/07/2024 11:32

Why is it Gary’s fault?

Sauropodlet · 06/07/2024 11:34

soupfiend · 06/07/2024 08:28

I agree with you about the news but whats it got to do with Gary?

What other Garys can we blame

Kemp
Cooper
Oldman
Barlow (my money's on him)
Rhodes (RIP)

Sugarfish · 06/07/2024 12:07

Does it really matter if you watched it on bbc1, iplayer or the bbc news channel? It’s the same programme.

Would footie fans be happy with just the facts and not watch the game? Bliss
