AIBU that the BBC1 10 o'clock news shouldn't be delayed by 45 mins for (checks notes) Portugal vs France on the eve of a monumental election result and the day of a new government.

AIBU???

Did you somehow manage to not see the election result for 17 hours?!

AIBU???

Calm down
We had wall to wall coverage all day, 45 mins without was a blessed relief.
And I can't stand football

CharlotteBog · 06/07/2024 08:55

Surely you knew the election result before 10pm last night.
I don't watch a lot of telly so am not sure which (out of the 5 million) channels had election news.
Radio 4 would have been covering it at 10pm.

TheRealSlimShandy · 06/07/2024 08:55

By the fact that you can access Mumsnet - I assume you can also access iplayer or the BBC news website. Or one of the many many 24hr news platforms.

Sondheimisademigod · 06/07/2024 08:57

MrsMoastyToasty · 06/07/2024 08:27

And the Grand Prix...

And Henley...

Whatineed · 06/07/2024 09:01

It's the fault of Ronaldo and Mbappe surely?

The Germany - Spain game went over time too, is Gary responsible for that too? 😂

Longma · 06/07/2024 09:03

Bjorkdidit · 06/07/2024 08:42

Surely the news is on the BBC News channel if you want to watch the news?

If only that's where the near constant sport stayed - on the many sports channels.
Sport seems to be on most main channels at the moment.

Probably because in an era of streaming, and online news, live sports and events are one of few things which has value in being played live. Personally the only things I’ve sought out on live TV in the last year have been gymnastics world and European championships, Bake Off and the election results from last night. I’ll watch the Olympics too. I have very little interest in other scheduled programming and don’t feel a need to watch it live if a programme does sound interesting to me.

GreenWheat · 06/07/2024 09:12

Hmmm, let's see... There had been constant election broadcasting from 10pm on Thursday night, all through the day on Friday, plus news channels broadcasting 24hour coverage. Did you not have access to any of that, nor iPlayer, nor the BBC News website?

The Euros are on once every four years and it's approaching the final stages. So the choice is "Shall we show the live penalty shoot out between two big footballing nations in a competition that takes place once every four years, or shall we cut it off to show something that's already happened and been covered non stop for nearly 24 hours?". They made the right choice

kitsuneghost · 06/07/2024 09:18

Is that you Rishi? Had to cancel your sky and now have to rely on council news at 10 rather than the 24h news channels.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/07/2024 09:22

soupfiend · 06/07/2024 08:28

I agree with you about the news but whats it got to do with Gary?

What other Garys can we blame

Kemp
Cooper
Oldman
Barlow (my money's on him)
Rhodes (RIP)

lol. Busey? He’s a bit bonkers, I reckon it could be his fault..

LakeTiticaca · 06/07/2024 09:32

I was more concerned that Emmerdale was cancelled
How very dare they!!

CelesteCunningham · 06/07/2024 09:32

Meh. I don't like football and have been watching the election coverage but I think it's fine. They wouldn't have been saying much different 45 minutes earlier last night, and they have a news channel and website with live streaming for anyone who didn't want to wait.

I would be raging if coverage of a key contest on a sport I do follow was cut short at that point! Fair enough if it was the exit poll or something, but by 10pm last night the result had been known for 24 hours and the key cabinet appointments made in the afternoon and early evening. There wasn't really anything new to say.

FunIsland · 06/07/2024 09:35

Football is to many people, far more important than politics

This is a worry.

I'd been working in hospital all day so just wanted the highlights. I did watch iplayer in the end but felt the football should have been elsewhere.

The news is constantly on, on various channels. The whole euros tournament can’t be moved for us!

The BBC 10o'clock news is an institution, just like the football. It shouldn't be moved... especially on momentous day.

Those saying about 'sports channels' they all cost money

It is so important to have free to air sport on TV

crumblingschools · 06/07/2024 09:55

So what time did you start work? The result was known very early in the morning. Indeed the result was very close to the exit poll so the news was really known 24 hours earlier

Ooh, where are these freeview sport channels in the UK, what number are they?
