Woman complained to manager about DD

Bearaque · 05/07/2024 21:40

So my DD works at McDonalds whilst she’s at sixth form and today she’s come home upset. She was working at the window, handing out the food.

This woman made a complaint to the manager that DD didn’t say a single word to her or look at her when she passing her the drink and food and that she was too busy talking to her friend. Complained to manager who had words with them both.

DD said this was true but at the end of the day it’s McDonald’s, it’s full of teenagers, as long as you get your food quickly does it even matter what the service is like?!

Your daughter was very rude, and you are endorsing that rudeness. Very poor parenting.

Askingforafriendtoday · 06/07/2024 18:10

I hate this rudeness from teenagers or anybody else. I hope she learns from it.
Show her these comments if you cannot bear to tell her you agree with woman who complained and are pleased that the manager had words

Shortly after I joined this thread this morning, I developed a hunger for a bacon and egg mcmuffin. There was a handy McDonalds (I live in the Algarve so they are not as plentiful as they are in the UK). I ordered my food as usual and paid. The lady that handed me my McMuffin gave me the biggest smile and said something along the lines of "enjoy your breakfast on this beautiful day and pay my smile forward" What a lovely attitude.

Bad customer service is bad customer service.

My first job was Saturday girl at John Lewis, I was 16 and working with a plethora of people my age, had we acted like your DD did (which we wouldn't have dreamt!) We'd have been out with no right to reply!

Your DD has learnt a valuable lesson here fortunately with nothing more than a bruised ego to show for it.

Height of rudeness and I've seen teenages be let go for less. Lucky that all she got was a telling off. I have complained about this myself when being served by someone who isn't doing their job properly.

You sound like the type of customer who revels in their 'power' and would get satisfaction from revenge harsh punishment for something that's not really that big of a deal, just because you can, it needs addressing but people don't need sacking over it.

Young people have generally dealt with their family, their mates and teachers or other figures of authority.

Customers are not figures of authority no matter how much they like to think they are , but the 'rules' around dealing with them are different to mates and family, and they need to learn those rules in practice and be taught how to do it. Being sacked for one infringement isn't going to do that and isn't going to improve service, teaching people how to do it, and do it properly is going to improve service (as well as improving pay, conditions and protecting staff from the increasing poor behaviour and abuse from customers).

Going to the manager is the right call because it's their job to well, manage. But being let go, or expecting people to be because of one mistake of this nature is a complete overreaction and ridiculous.

Juliet194 · 06/07/2024 18:12

Personally I wouldn't complain to the manager, but I would find it very rude. I always make sure I look at people when they serve me, and say thank you etc. It is basic manners. I would find it very rude to be blanked and have my food thrust in my general direction. I don't go to McDonald's drive through that often, but tbf when I do the young staff are always very polite and chatty.

I'd be embarrassed if my teenage daughter was like this. Not speaking to the customer is rude, but not even looking at her suggests that your daughter has very poor social skills. Eye contact is important in customer service jobs.

I think the customer who complained has done her a favour, she can hopefully learn from this.

You don't think people ever lose their jobs over customers complaints, i assure you they can. Somebody above already wrote their son is a mcdonalds manager and this wouldn't be tolerated

I’ve worked in hospitality. I know how it works.

The OP’s DD hasn’t lost her job. (As far as we know) so what’s your issue? You’re being extremely defensive over this.

The DD was lacking in customer service. As most people on this thread have pointed out. This was picked up and fed back to management. DD was spoken to, probably doesn’t like constructive criticism and being in trouble so has gone crying to mummy.

RavenhairedRachel · 06/07/2024 18:16

I think a lot ( not all) teenagers have a communication problem nowadays. I think the manager was correct in reprimanding her if she's in a customer facing role then she needs to act appropriately.

The issue is people on this thread have made some absolutely disgusting comments about mcdonalds workers, teenagers, a young girl and her mother over something that is so minor. 90% of the real world wouldn't even notice. Even your post saying she's gone crying to mummy. How horrible.

What’s your problem? You are being incredibly overly defensive.

OP’s DD admitted that she was rude, a customer complained, the manager pulled her up on it, end of story. Hardly the end of the world. Hopefully she’ll learn from the experience and change her attitude towards work.

The only person making disgusting comments about the worth of McDonalds workers is the OP herself.

Have you read this thread. How can you not see the problems of people's attitudes towards mcdonalds workers, teenagers, this young girl and her mother. Over something very very minor.

It wasn’t minor for the customer though was it?

Ive been the customer before when I’ve been at the McDonalds drive through and the staff have been chatting and messing around. They gave me the complete incorrect order because they were chatting whilst serving me. I.e not concentrating on their job.

Even your post saying she's gone crying to mummy. How horrible.

Boo hoo. Im sure the OP and her DD will be absolutely fine.

Of cause it's minor. Talk about 1st world problems. If a thread had been put up on aibu from the customers pov they would be teared to shreds. Aibu I went to mcdonalds and a teenager didn't pay attention to me so I went In to speak to the manager now my foods cold 🙄

I’m sorry we’ll just have to agree to disagree.

You might not mind poor customer service and not being acknowledged. And that’s totally fine

But other people, myself included, like to be acknowledged when we are being served. A basic “Thank you, here’s you order” or “would you like any napkins or extra sauces” takes a few seconds. It’s basic manners. Poor customer experiences should always be fed back. As well as positives.

I’ve been the customer on the receiving end of poor service. I’ve also been the 17 year old waitress at TGI Fridays who was trained to treat our customers like guests. I received complaints when I’d got stuff horribly wrong, I didn’t go crying to my parents about it. I learnt from it.

Well this young girl clearly has a great relationship with her mum and can talk to her about things that have upset her. It's lovely to see such great parenting. Yeah I think we will have to agree to disagree as england have just scored and I need calm before penalties cus I can't cope 🤣🤣

HealthyPepper · 06/07/2024 18:39

In your position, I would have had a quick firm but supportive chat with my girl and explained that I agreed with the manager. And help her aim to do better. And then go on with my day.

I cannot imagine a world where I would start an outraged post on MN about it.

But it's hardly the end of the world as we know it, a life changing and traumatic experience that will never be recovered from is it? You get the wrong order, someone who should engage with you doesn't. It's worth recognising and correcting, it's not worth the level of anger some people exhibit over it.

The DD didn't shit on her bonnet and hand her a bag of arsenic, or even throw the order through the window and say "'Ere, now fuck off!".

The reactions are disproportionate to what actually happened and the reasonable expected effects on the person they happened to, which really should be mild annoyance, not the levels of anger that are seen and experienced in response to things like this.

Jumpers4goalposts · 06/07/2024 18:45

Your DD’s only job is to give paying customers good customer service and she didn’t I’m not surprised the customer complained. It doesn’t really matter what company is.

That is a part of her job it's not her only job or do you think everyone who works with the general public does absolutely nothing else. Do you think they just stand their until someone comes or do you think they do their actual job in-between

Skybluepinky · 06/07/2024 19:03

they were being rude and unprofessional no wonder the customer complained and she got told off, hopefully she’ll learn her lesson.

Their “actual” job? So now customer service isn’t part of their actual job at all? 🤣 The customer should have realised her presence was unwanted and that she was interrupting someone’s actual job. 🤣🤣
