What a brave lady.

Whilst I am not an ardent Labour supporter, I completely support you and how you have stood up to the bullying, racism, violence and hatred sent your way.

Sad that your family could not be there to see your victory but under the circumstances you made the right choice.

That this country is allowing this type of intimidation and behaviour - we should be ashamed of ourselves.

For those saying that it is not an MP’s role to get involved in overseas wars why did Keir Starmer give the green light to Israel to defend itself and why are we giving billions to support the Ukraine war? All very well if we are neutral but we seem to take sides. David Lammy is an MP and he will very much be deciding these agendas. I hope he takes other views into consideration.

Jess Phillips is not a minister though. She is not in charge of foreign policy. It has nothing to do with her role as an MP.

I think you are mixing up what government roles there are. Foreign policy is not decided even by the minister, but by the civil service. The minister can shape policy and influence to a degree, but our nation's defence strategy goes well beyond the government of the day!

There is a naivety by pp to assume MPs have any influence on global affairs. So to threaten and abuse an MP over issues that they have no power to change is ridiculous and ill informed.

Foreign Policy is not decided by the civil service! Policy is decided by governments (ministers/cabinet/PM). It is delivered by civil servants who bring their experience & expertise to bear on the government of the day by offering evidence based advice to support thr governments objectives. MP do have a role to play through committees, APPGs & voting in the chamber. Defence strategy is not the same as foreign policy and obviously the military leaders have a role to play.

Acually the more I think about this 'the subtext is intimidation by men in general' thing, the more it's making me wonder.

Pritti Patel, Kemi Badenoch and Suella Braverman all kept their seats. If the narrative goes that the problem is this instance is just men, rather than Muslim men, and that the real baddies are Reform, who are apparently all a bunch of racists and misogynists, where was the intimidation and the heckling for these three women of colour?

They are also loathed by the progressive left for having the temerity to be WOC from immigrant backgrounds and Tory, as if the two should be mutually exclusive, so a good proportion of white men on the progressive left might be tempted to hurl insults at them too.

Did we see any of that, or any reports of it? No we didn't.

I think for Jess Phillips it has been somewhat of an eye opener. In earlier elections those men giving her abuse would have been part of her voter base. Back when Labour was considered to be a friend by the Muslim community. Back when she campaigned and fought for them.

Yes, exactly!

@Ronaldo2004

Threats are never acceptable - hopefully she’ll also follow this as she did once say she’d “knife Jeremy Corbyn in the front”

This example is so disingenuous. It was in a conversation about him being figuratively stabbed in the back (betrayed) and her point was that she wouldn't do something behind his back, instead she would be open about it. Ludicrous to suggest it was anything close to a violent or physical threat.

alldayeveryday247 · 07/07/2024 16:10

@TheaBrandt

I do find the arrogance of emigrating to a new country and expecting them to adapt to you quite mind boggling.

I'm not sure if this is supposed to be satirical or if you've missed the irony that this is exactly how Britain came to have power in so many parts of the world that they weren't native to...

HebburnPokemon · 07/07/2024 16:19

Do the Tories have a different stance on Gaza than Labour? Why the hate aimed at Labour?

Obviously she didn’t mean she would literally knife Jeremy Corbyn but using that tone of language as a public figure was at best deeply irresponsible.

Because the hard left like nothing more than to undermine the Labour Party.

Kind of like how the centre right undermined Labour throughout Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership

How many years ago was that?

also are you criticising that approach or supporting it? 🤔

Because generally Labour was the party they always gave their backing to and were steered towards by their leaders. They expected more outright support towards Palestine from the Labour Party which they would have had with Corbyn's Labour. Starmer is rightly putting the UK's position to the front.

OvaHere · 07/07/2024 16:29

TwigletsAndRadishes · 07/07/2024 10:33

In that case, you'll be able to find me plenty of video evidence of female candidates being booed and heckled during their speeches by groups of non-Muslim men as the results were announced, won't you? And stories of threats and intimidation during campaigning.

As it is, the only two that have made the news are Jess Phillips and Nigel Farage, who has had missiles thrown at him, needs protection heavies wherever he goes, and was heckled and called a Racist by a group that included both men and women. Which is funny, because far fewer people seem to be very exercised about that. Both sets of hecklers believe they hold the moral high ground and are acting with their conscience on a set of specific issues, yet we seem to be outraged by one group while merely shrugging at the other - or worse, cheering them on.

And Rosie Duffield.

This behaviour is caused by men plus deeply embedded beliefs whether religious or political

Any man is capable of being misogynistic but there's usually a secondary factor that motivates them to the point they end up physically at a hustings or other space yelling abuse at women.

Religious and political beliefs also has men targeting other men but I think it's rarer to find the same level of venom. Men really dislike women they perceive as disobedient or standing in the way of something they want.

Just what I was thinking. It's a warped logic. Why not just ignore the fact that foreign nationals are trafficking people for use in modern slavery in the UK because after all, we ourselves used to exploit slaves?

Why not just ignore the plight of child labourers the world over when we ourselves used to send small children up chimneys?

Why not turn a blind eye to blatant homophobia in certain religious communities because after all, homosexuality was illegal here too, once.

Harrumphhhh · 07/07/2024 16:33

@TwigletsAndRadishes - Shabana Mahmood was also treated appallingly during her election campaign.

Well yes, but not by white, right wing misogynists, which is my whole point. She was targeted for the same reason as Jess Phillips, and by the same cohort of people that targeted Jess Phillips. With the added insult of having her identity as a Muslim woman questioned because she wouldn't capitulate to the demands of the Muslim men in her constituency.

Your reply I assume, to me, was deleted.

So I don't know how you replied to my posts, if indeed you did at all.

You need to understand one thing - your MP Is not there to get involved with wars around the world, she is there to ensure the local problems and issues are solved as far as possible and represent your local needs in the houses of parliament. If you have an issue with your local hospital etc you can turn to her as a last resort.

Your MP is NOT there to represent your global views.
So why do you continue to post on here about genocide etc when it has nothing at all to do with Jess Phillips.

You might be angry about the issues in Gaza, it might make you very sad, but Jess Phillips should NOT be getting involved, and nor should you be expecting her to.

The issues between Gaza and Israel are for Gaza and Israel to sort out, they need to come to working agreement. I don't think anyone in the world wants to see this situation continue.

Abdolutely! Well said.

I am from a Muslim background. I am broadly pro-Palestine but feel for victims of 7/10 and the Gaza attacks equally. Too many innocent victims.

I am appalled by the actions of these men. They are not good people. They are sexist aggressive shits who blame their disgusting actions on religion. They get all Muslims a bad name and I detest them and their ilk. Leave Jess Philips alone and stop your aggressive and sexist actions. People like this make the UK less diverse and inclusive.

Not in my name, you sexist barbaric pigs.

As a female who grew up in this area also and was spat on and verbally abused regularly just because of my white skin, I wholeheartedly agree with your entire post.

But then again both myself and others in my position have never been allowed to talk about or complain as I will be labeled a racist or right-wing. 😡

As a brown Muslim woman, I think the actions of these men towards you and pp are violent, sexist and racist and I wish we could throw the shits in jail. We need zero tolerance of racism and violence from all sides.
