What a brave lady.

Whilst I am not an ardent Labour supporter, I completely support you and how you have stood up to the bullying, racism, violence and hatred sent your way.

Sad that your family could not be there to see your victory but under the circumstances you made the right choice.

That this country is allowing this type of intimidation and behaviour - we should be ashamed of ourselves.

You can write to them , go to a surgery and hold them to account in a public meeting, you can express yourself publicly in a letter to the paper, or on social media, you can start a petition, you can lobby and publicly support their opponents, you can organise a peaceful protest. Those are off the top of my head. What mechanisms would you like to see? Why do you think its acceptable to dehumanise politicians rather than engage in democratic means of influencing them?

Or pray for all the good it will do. Bear in mind our current system doesn't even allow for MPs who have broken the law to be held to account.

Just for the hard of thinking, I'm not justifying any unacceptable behaviour to any MP of any stripe no matter how unacceptable their behaviour may be. Anyone who breaks the law should be subject to the processes of justice.

I think for Jess Phillips it has been somewhat of an eye opener. In earlier elections those men giving her abuse would have been part of her voter base. Back when Labour was considered to be a friend by the Muslim community. Back when she campaigned and fought for them.

Tracker1234 · 06/07/2024 17:13

Those men heckling her are furious that as a mere women she has beaten them. They are truly disgusting but I am sure nothing much will happen to them and additionally they will go back to their own communities whilst having their 15 minutes of fame and being slapped on the back by their supporters (all male).

LordPercyPercy · 06/07/2024 17:31

Funny how posters think this is a "Muslim" thing when Jo Cox was literally murdered by a far right, white bloke who was NOT a Muslim

Sir David Amess was killed by a Muslim extremist.

Threats are never acceptable - hopefully she’ll also follow this as she did once say she’d “knife Jeremy Corbyn in the front”

Don't be ridiculous. You knew exactly what she meant, as did every other native English speaker. It wasn't a threat of violence, she was stating that she would oppose him and vote against him openly. She wasn't stabbing him in the back (a common phrase you know the meaning of) she was being open about her disagreement with him.

Obviously.

There is an interesting blog that I currently can't find to link which is written by a Sikh immigrant who says we as a nation have to stop being ashamed of our flag and of being British.
He is proud of both, he is a proud British Punjabi Sikh and says we should all start being proud to stand up for our flag and our values. And that if we think another country does it better then we should move there.

There is a French YouTuber called Ben le Patriote, he is Muslim of Algerian origin, and he does the same thing in France. He really rips the lids out of young French Muslims who think Algeria is so wonderful, and says they should be thankful to live in France.

I do find the arrogance of emigrating to a new country and expecting them to adapt to you quite mind boggling. Imagine trying that in China…

The Labour party did not have a problem with the culture as long as they were being voted for. That can't be taken for granted anymore, so let's see if they continue feeding the crocodile.

The British invented and perfected doing exactly that

@SerendipityJane you've lost me. With a few exceptions MPs are subject to the same laws as anyone else.

What measures would you put in place to make MPs more accountable to their constituents on individual policies?

SidewaysOtter · 05/07/2024 15:41

That is horrendous. Who are these misogynist arseholes?

It's all about Israel & Palestine. And hugely unfair on her as she resigned from the Front Bench because she wanted a ceasefire & defied the whip.

Sir David Amess was killed by a Muslim extremist.

The issue in this election was linked directly to conatituencies with high muslim populations over Gaza. Jo Cox was killed by a white rw extremist. At one point Prevent was dealing with more issues of white rw extremism than any other sort. David Amess was killed by a muslim extremist. All these things are true. There is no one single motivator that links to one community.

One recurring strand is men's violence against women (read Joan Smith on the relationship between VAWG & terrorism). Another is extreme fudamentalist religion, not exclusively an issue with Islam/Islamism. Another is external actors driving terrorism, such as Iran, Hezbollah etc. There are rw global networks too Such as the rw christian anti abortion movement. You still need to identify which factor is relevant in each individual situation.

While true, that isn't something the British can really complain too much about.

Call me hopelessly naive but I do not understand a) what it is about this issue that is cared about in the way that wars in Syria, Myanmar or Sudan etc aren’t and b) why it’s used to justify such horrendous behaviour with the perpetrators of it not being dealt with.

Dustyyy · 06/07/2024 20:23

The treatment of Jess Phillips and Shabana Mahmood should give everyone a huge wake up call. Threats of violence have no place in British politics. It’s bully boy tactics from a certain group of people who want to intimidate others, particularly women. Did anyone see the video of the elderly Jewish man who was shouted at and threatened at a mosque in Manchester? Worrying times ahead if we don’t stamp down very hard on these thugs.

Stop selling arms to Israel and being complicit in a genocide.

Note the American spelling of Labour.

Could be Australian. For some unfathomable reason the political party here is Labor, though the word is labour.

Drfosters · 07/07/2024 08:05

Livelovebehappy · 06/07/2024 14:59

The culture of the hecklers explain it. If you watch the footage. These are people who, if they could, would not allow any woman to have a voice, or a job, or a vote. They despise us with a passion. We cannot allow them to have any sort of position in today's society. Horrible human beings.

that is what makes me more confused though as I thought MPs like Jess Philips were the first to defend them. Apologies if I am wrong but my understanding was that labour MPs always are on the side of people like that, particularly from an immigration POV. I haven’t heard anything since that night where labour have said they are going to tackle that behaviour which tells me they condone it.

She was but the Muslim community were very unhappy with The Labour Party's response to the Gaza situation. Particularly Keir Starmer who some time last year said Israel had a right to withdraw power and water from Gaza. Since then the Muslim community organised for Independent candidates to stand to get Labour out. The relationship with Labour is over.
